  1. The earlier responses are good enough to curb your curiosity. I did have the same information on-line but it turned out to be my biometrics when I received the hard copy via USPS. Indeed, I also freaked out but as has always been the case, Vjers gave me the needed information to calm down. So sit back, relax and get ready for your biometrics.

  2. I would that you call USCIS, and find out what is really the case. Some of the folks out there at their office are very helpful. Just a suggestion though! I know other Vjers have more to add. Remember also that it is also good to be patient. So do not throw that quality away. It is precious, and not many people have it.

  3. Hi, I do not know how busy your local SS office looks like, but I can say that it is not time consuming at all, at least to my case. I spent less than 10 minutes in the office. I was given an express status when I checked in, and explained my issue to the officer. It is worth trying. Good luck!

Hi, I was naturalized as a US Citizen yesterday. I was told to go to the local Social Security Office and update my records there as well. I do understand WHY I need to do this but do I have to do this in person or can I do it online or fill in a form (SS-5?) and mail it to them?

I have missed work many times waiting in line during the greencard process and then again during the naturalization process i..e, finger printing, interview, the oath, passport etc etc. I am very proud to be an American but I dont want to miss work and wait in line any more.

Has anyone had any experience in updating the SS records without going in person?

  4. Hi, I did not reschedule my interview but my oath date. This was because the date coincided with the day I was scheduled to defend my thesis for a degree. I was really in a dilemma. But I decided on the latter, wrote a letter explaining my situation, attached a copy of a letter of introduction from the university, and sent it to my district office.

Indeed, the office wrote back acknowledging receipt of my request. A new date for the oath followed after waiting for about a month.

In your case, it seems you have a legitimate case. Do some further research on your case. But one of the ways to deal with such situations is to write a letter to district office where the interview is to be held, explaining your situation, and attach releveant copies (in your case, they should be all medical documents in your possession.)

    Good luck!

I am supposed to haVE my interview date on october 28th, i just decided on my own 2-3 days ago, but yesterday i got into an accident, and ended up having a cast on my Left foot. I am overseas filing for the 319 B naturalization, so in order for me to do my interview i would have to travel from japan back to america, in washington DC

I am walking on crutches and I felt I would just let myself heal more before I leave the country, now my question is how can i reschedule my interview appointment? I haven't received the actual interview notice in the mail, maybe because the supervisor just emailed it to me, I am unsure if they will send me a physical one thru mail, I emailed her back but she has not answered me.

ANyone know how I can best reschedule my interview?

WOuld they be open to the rescheduling of my interview or should i just suck it up and travel even if I'm not 100% physically able to move around.

Plus I'm staying at a friend's there and do not want to hassle them having to care for me so much more..

    Thanks!

  5. I am not too sure how the oath ceremony is run in Wisconsin. In my case, and in San Francisco, it was reiterated by the authorities over and over again, for all newly naturalized citizens to visit the SSA to have their information updated.

Of course, I waited till I had received my passport book and the original citizenship certificate (what a sigh of relief!) before heading to the local office. For the first time in that office, I had an express service. wow! I asked myself, what has changed, lol! The answer is obvious, lol! On a serious note, the officer took me through their office proceedures, and made me swear that I was going to tell the truth, and only the truth, bearing in mind that any perjury is liable to punishment according as it is stated in their books. Geez, was I going through another USCIS-like interview? Well,he looked at my original citizenship certificate, and asked questions such as; mother's name, date and place of birth. The question of my ethnic background was also asked. At this point, this question drew a big laughter from both of us. He then said, he needed to ask because it was part of his duties, although he knew the obvious, lol. When he was satified with the answers that I provided, he made a copy of my original certificate, and handed it back to me. He rejected my nice color copy. He told me he needed to use his black and white machine to make the copy. Do I have a choice? I guess the answer is no. He proceeded with updating the information on my file. When he was done, he said I was going to get my card in 2 weeks. It took about 8 days though, for the card to arrive( I did not request to change the number).

I still think there is the need for you to go to your local SSA to update your information on their system. I guess others who have similar experiences, or otherwise can also share their experiences.

NB: Can I ever stop visiting VJ? lol!

I am taking the oath tomorrow and am looking forward to ending this long, yet exciting, journey!

However, as i'm laying in bed, browsing through posts on VJ, I found several people mentioning a visit to the SSA after naturalization. Is this a requirement? If so for what purpose?

And since I obviously missed this... Is there anything else I need to do besides get a passport? :help:

    Cheers.

  6. Congrats Krakatoa. The journey is finally ended.

I did receive my naturalization certificate. I guess my journey with USCIS is officially ended. It is been helpful reading threads from you and the rest. These threads helped alot to avoid having to contract a legal brain through the journey. Say hi whenever you are free and I will not hesitate to respond. God bless!

By this time, I 'm guessing you already have the certificate in hand. Congratulations!!!

I actually liked the new US passport. I applied today and picked it up along with my Certification of Naturalization after a few hours of waiting. Traffic was terrible (portions toll) but I'm glad I didn't have to worry about losing my certificate in the mail...

  7. I used tax transcripts sent to me directly from the IRS office. All three years were just leaflets. I mean one to three pages per year for 3 years consecutively. I had no problems with USCIS on that. I have seen most folks here recommend using the transcripts, if possible. So if you are in the position to get a transcript (easy to request from IRS), go ahead, and use the transcripts. Just an opinion, though. Good luck!

Thank you so much guys for ur help. and Yes i dint work in 2007/2008

and i dont owe the IRS money.

now one more thing. which better for me to do when i send my application for the Citizenship, to send to tax return and the taxscript? i see in the Taxscript just 1 to 2 pages, i mean no details do u think they accept that? sounds funny beside all that bunch of papers on my tax return lol.. Sorry guys newbie with Tax things lol

    Thanks alot.

  8. Hi Folks,

I got my certificate back today (09/17/2010). The journey is ended. It hurts to say bye to USCIS. And to all Vjers who are in the queue, do follow procedure, seek for answers to issues that you don't understand, and I trust folks on this thread will be all willing to share tangible and workable ideas. I love you all and bye.

So you got your passport Sep 13....before Friday Sep 17, you will get your certificate....and if perchance you dont get it....relax you are still a USC....it will all work out...

  9. Hi Folks, I don't know if I can ever quit VJ. As hard as I try, new issues crop up, and would have to research and see if someone has gone through similar situation. lo and behold, there is nothing new under the sun here on VJ. VJers have been a great source of help to me in this whole journey with USCIS.

Finally, my passport books has landed (Applied on August 20, 2010 and received on September 13, 2010. Approximately 25 days). I am waiting patiently for my original naturalization certificate though. But that is for later discusssion. I will admonish all those still "travelling" with USCIS to seek for clues to their problems here, and they will surely go through this bumpy (sometimes) road-trip unscathed. Hey, Masterpiece, you are right. It is good to be patient. Does anyone knows if the passport books normally comes before the naturalization certificate? Just thinking aloud again! Long live VJers!

  10. Thanks jay2. Your response is reassuring. Blessesd, vjers!

Your naturalization certificate should also be on the way, you applied for a passport so the email update is a generic notice they send to applicants. If you applied for a US passport with a US birth certificate, they would send you a notice for just the passport, it works the same way. So nothing to worry about.

  11. Geez, masterpiece! I too soon forgot about you. I guess you are right. My patience level is lacking. And per your response, I think I will have to work on it a little more. But don't blame me, masterpiece! You know how "omo ghana suffer don get this paper now", and it has virtually become one of the most cheerished properties I have, lol!

Masterpiece, thanx for your response anyways. This is just one of the reassuring reponses I was looking forward to hear and nothing else, lol! Good to see you again, Masterpiece!

    @Franklocks:

So now you are getting a finger wagging....Tsk! tsk!! tsk!!!

Did Masterpiece not teach you well the finer art of relaxing....taking a deep breath....etc etc?

I am off VJ for a while and you relapse?....more tsk! tsk!! tsk!!!

You will get your passport, then your certificate in two separate mails.

    Don`t sweat it!

And oh by the way congrats on being a USC. "Where the party at"....?

  12. I applied for my passport book via normal routine proceedure (20th August), and was duely assured by the officer at the post office desk that my passport will be ready in 4-6 weeks. He again indicated that prior to the arrival of the book I will first receive my origianl naturalization certificate in a separate envelope. As of yet my certificate has not come in, but received an email from the passport office today (10th September)that my passport book is ready, and it's on its way. The non-receipt of my original naturalization certificate is making me a bit agitated. Am I worrying for nothing about my original naturalization certificate? Anyone with similar experience can share as always. Long live Vjers!

  13. Congratulations CanAmCharlotte, and thanks for posting this information. I applied for my passport via normal routine proceedure (20th August), and was duely assured by the officer at the post office desk that my passport will be ready in 4-6 weeks. But prior to that I will receive my certificate first in separate envelope. As of yet my certificate has not come in, but received an email from the passport office that my passport book ready and it's on its way. The non-receipt of my original certificate is making me a bit agitated. Am I worrying for nothing, and duely my original naturalization certificate will be in? Anyone with similar experience can share as always. Long live Vjers!

Even though the passport office tells you it will be 2-3 weeks until you get your expedited passport, don't believe them. Mine came in one week. Woo-hoo. To make matters better, they actually put the hyphen in my name after telling me they most definitely could not. The photo I had taken is the best mug shot I've ever had and I get to keep it for ten whole years. Happy, happy, happy. Now I just have to wait for the naturalization certificate to be returned. Just one more thing to check off my 'worry' list.

    Here's hoping everyone's passport/certifciate comes in a timely fashion.

  14. Folks, I want to think aloud here after reading a few submissions on this subject of passport applications. I am wondering if it makes any sense for USCIS to encourage new citizens to apply immediately for their passports right after the ceremony when they knew very well that the applicant's SS has to be updated first? I have had some friends who had their ceremonies, applied for their passports through the post office, and had no problems. I hope things don't mess up with some of us, especially when we have struggled to come this far.

Does mean that the SS can be updated at the ceremony place ? Last time I visited a SS office was Clearwater Florida and it felt like an alleyway in Kabul at 2am. I walked backwards to my car

  15. I think I will have to go with Claudio. After my interview, it took 4 weeks to get my oath date. Indeed, I did request for a new date for my oath ( with reasons), and it took close to 1 month to get a response to which I was re-scheduled for the next available oath ceremony ( I did also talk to a customer service person at the 1800#, and she was helpful, polite and very resourceful). She was helpful because the advise she gave with regards to my case was exactly what happened. So why don't you give it a try, and call USCIS to find out what is actually causing the delay. I wish you all the best!

  16. Having had to re-schedule my oath ceremony once, I had the opportunity to join 1307 people from 103 countries today, August 19, 2010 to be welcomed as the newest citizens in the United States of America. At long last, the journey is over. The program was very colorful. Program started a little beyond the 9:15AM reporting time but as soon as it started, everything went on smoothly and orderly. Good luck to all those waiting for their turns. Just relax and be assured that so long as you keep reading trends here and asking questions relating to your specific cases, you will be fine. This is because there are lot of Vjers here with great minds who are ready to offer pragmatic and meaningful suggestions to questions asked. Long live VJers. I believe our paths will cross again someday, somehow, somewhere. Blessed!

  17. Hi folks, thought I could share this with persons in ma situation. I was supposed to have had my oath ceremonny on June 17 this year but had to rescheduled due to school commitments. I am glad to say that USCIS responded to my letter and granted me my request, and I got a letter today set for a new date. USCIS is doing a good job though, yet I would like to thank all vjers who offered some valuable advice and other resources for making this journey easier.Long live VJ!

  18. Had my interview on May 24th, and had my oath letter letter on June 10th and my oath was on 17th June in Oakland. Good luck.!

Hello, just wondering has anyone had the citizenship interview in San Francisco recently and waiting for oath?

I had my interview first week in June and it was rather smooth

In the end he said that he will recommend the case for approval and I should be getting the oath letter in about one to two weeks.

In theory I should be just waiting, but you all know how it is in reality while waiting for something you don't know when it will happen,

Is there a way that you can find out whether you have been scheduled for the oath ceremony, and when? The last thing I want to do is to miss the ceremony,

    Thanks a lot

  19. I was scheduled for my oath ceremony on June 17th, 2010 but that date clashed with my thesis defence so I indicated to my local office that I would rather have them defer my ceremony to some other dates( I included authorized letters from my institution to support my position.) I received a letter today from the office(Notice date June 21, 2010) stating "This is to advise you that, as requested, we have canceled the oath ceremony appointment on ................. for the above applicant. We will advise you of any further action taken on this case, including any rescheduled oath ceremony appointment information, under separate notice."

Well, the question is, what is the wait time? Anyone who might have gone through similar situation? As always, all contributions are welcome. Long live VJ!

  20. Congrats Bobo! I rescheduled my ceremony on 06/17 though cos of clash of dates, and I am hoping they fix me a date soon.

Attended a very nice Oath ceremony in Pittsburgh, I am a US citizen now!

I couldn't find the way to change the font to red, can anybody do this for me?

    Thank you.

  21. I agree with all the comments made. The most stressless stage of the immigration journey for most of us is the naturalization stage. I went through the process based on 3-yr marriage and it was really a wonderful journey. And based on what I read on this thread, it really does not matter which of the two your application is based on. In your case, 5-yrs would be ideal. Just read the guide and follow the thread here and you will be safe. I knew less about the immigration process until I joined VJ. I have learned a lot here. Every information you get here should be taken serious and if it applies to your case, then you should go with it and you will surely go through without struggles. Members here on VJ are really knowlegeable. Good luck and hi to Kathryn41. Her comments on this thread is really helpful.

Out of all of the immigration processes we went through, Naturalization was by far and away the easiest and least stressful - so don't worry. Read over the Guide and you will know all you need to know. Basically, with a 5 year application, you don' t need to provide documents that you are still married to and living with your US spouse, so there is less paperwork involved.
