Technically, you need to have travel coming up to book an appointment. I do, and I did. That said, I think they may let you apply in person if they are not too busy. The office is just across the road from the courthouse and it takes like 5 minutes to try.

Had my oath this morning. Finally done with USCIS, yay.
Few more notes on top of what @arya already said:
If your ceremony is before 10am, the garage next door is not an option. They let people w/o a pass in only starting 10am.
You'd have to remove your belt, etc, but they did let us keep our shoes on.
We had a judge sing us a song at the end. The dude lied though when he said he wasn't a good singer.
The judge also stayed after the ceremony to let people take pictures with him and their certificates.
If you need a passport quick (and have proof of travel ) and have an appointment either on the same day or with a few days they will likely let you come in right after your ceremony regardless of when is your actual appointment. If you don't have an appointment, still try to see if they'd let you in, but you'd likely have to rush there right after the ceremony, since a few people may try that as well.

Finally got the notice of oath. It's on May 10.
If anyone has a recent Detroit oath experience to share, it'd be awesome. Gotta know how long to budget for. Gonna be trying to schedule an appointment at the passport agency on the same day.

Starting to think I should not have believed the IO about a name change not slowing things in Detroit and not gone ahead with it. Got approved a week ago and still no oath notice.

Here's a 5-year old topic. The ceremony itself shouldn't last for more than an hour, or two max. But I guess there is no way of knowing when is the actual start time as opposed to check-in time in the letter. I tried looking up naturalization ceremonies in the court's schedule, but they don't seem to be there.
I had my interview this morning. It went well, got recommended for approval.
The only useful info I have for future reference is that per IO the vast majority of Detroit-area ceremonies are done at the SE MI district court, so there is no delay from requesting a judicial oath (for a name change). The IO said that they do very few administrative oath ceremonies in-house, and only for very special circumstances.

Did you require a judicial oath ceremony? I'm still trying to figure out whether to ask the IO at the interview to scrap the name change request off N400, if that speeds things up.

I remember being there with Katya once for one of her three biometrics appointments and they were conducting an oath ceremony in the auditorium just to the left of the welcome desk. I also remember seeing oath ceremonies at a Tiger game. I guess the location can vary.
I guess that answers my question on the judicial vs administrative oath. Administrative ones are then done at the USCIS office, while the judicial ones go to the district court. Yeah, they do some special ones at public events on occasion.

I spend about 20 Minutes with the officer. She had questions about my n400 form so just make sure you know what you wrote on your form. She also asked me only 6 civic test questions because I got them right. Definitely study for those as well! I have to say my questions were pretty easy. At the end of the interview I chatted with the officer for 2 minutes. She told me she goes through about 9 cases a day and my case is one of those she likes the most because they are quick to review for the following reasons: I filed by myself, I knew my application, I speak good English and they have "seen" me during the green card process a few years back. So maybe you will be one of their favorites too! My oath ceremony is on April 19th in grand haven (I'm from Grand Rapids area)

Does anyone know if there are non-judicial oath ceremonies in MI? Most info I'm finding is about the judicial ones. I did request a name change on my N400 (just losing what USCIS put as a middle name on my first visa), but I hear that could delay things.

I too filed 90 days early. My anniversary was in late January, and I'm behind early January Detroit filers on the interview, so I guess at least in Detroit they don't assign you to an officer until your anniversary. That said, looks like you might be seeing something over the next month.
No real reason to check the online account if you are already getting the "We are still reviewing your case" e-mail notifications.
The e-mail about the interview will arrive first as a notice "USCIS has taken action on your application." Then, over a day or two, the online system will update to first show "we've scheduled your interview" status, and finally to show the notice in the documents tab.

Depending on your location, this could be a quite normal wait time.
At this point, some emergency return permit/rushed passport renewal (if available) from the embassy of your original citizenship country is your only option.

Between the timeline tracker and monthly filing threads there are probably at most a dozen Detroit filers here over the past year. I just registered to add my name to some trackers so that other can see what's going on, since I've been using this board a lot lately.
Would be nice to hear from @Biliebulezine about their recent interview, or from @lynchje2 and @arya when they have it soon.

No clue on 2. I guess it may be possible.
On 1) per my interviewing office, virtually all Detroit area oaths are judicial anyway, so requesting a name change does not delay anything. Now, if you're not from Detroit metro or nearby, your oath may happen elsewhere, so no clue about those.
