Mine was :

1/19/13 ...................................... New Haven, CT.................... No.................... 2/6/13

I have finally got a date for my oath ceremony, next week, Feb 7th in Portland, OR. I thought that when I received my letter it would give details of what happens on the day. All it tells me is what to wear, what to bring and where to go. Can anyone tell me how long it is? What everyone has to do on the day? I am a little anxious about it all. I have invited my 81 year old father-in-law and don't want to think he'll be stuck in a room for a long length of time.

I think it really depends on the venue and how many people are there. at mine there were 64 people all together (and their families). It was in a courtroom, it took about 40 minutes to get everyone checked in, then the judge was brought in, he spoke some words and then we were sworn in as citizens and then each one was presented with their certificates and given an opportunity to take a photo with the judge. All total we were there just over 2 hrs. That was our experience.

ok thanks! Bridgeport is infact the closet location for me since I am based down in fairfield county, we'll see! What time was your interview? Also, is parking an issue in Hartford? Once again, really appreciate your responses!

Thanks for the info! My interview is on 2/7 (Thursday). I see that yours was on a Thursday as well - did you mean Thursday was too late to be scheduled for you to have the oath ceremony the same Friday?

That's what they told me... they told me I was a day late for scheduling for the current week Friday oath ceremony. I was scheduled for the following Friday. I assume it has something to do with numbers too - perhaps they were full? There were 64 at my ceremony (a PACKED courthouse - they had to bring in 13 extra seats).

Thanks for your response! So I am guessing the oath ceremonies are held in multiple locations, were you given a choice? Do you happen to know where else they are held in addition to Bridgeport?

I think Hartford is 1st Friday, New Haven 2nd Friday, Bridgeport 3rd Fri of the month - there may be another location as well on the 4th Fri. but that seems to be their schedule. I wasn't given a choice (and didn't ask specifically - I just wanted the next available date).

It was in Bridgeport... there was one in my home town a week earlier but I missed the cut off by a day for that one..

No I just wrote up that we were living at our address, that it was month to month, that we both lived there. It was just a couple of sentences and his name, address and cell phone was on it.

Sorry I messed up there

I asked our landlord to sign a document stating that we were renting month by month at his location and that there was no signed lease as such. I was glad that I did as cohabitation proof was asked for by the officer and he gladly took the letter ( we don't have a formal lease),

I am also complete - or will be next week. Interview went well today and I passed 6/6 questions no worries! Interview process took about 1.25 hrs in Hartford - not quick for me, but no problems, just attention to details by the officer.

Sorry - no news on my end. I've been in line since Sept for an interview and no touches or notification from Hartford. I'm not sure what is going on, but they seem slow. The online processing times say just over 5 months - which would put us at Jan - not great news, but I'm not expecting an interview now until the new year.

Oops spoke to soon! I just received an email update this morning 12/4 stating my interview date has been scheduled.. I'll hopefully have a letter stating when in a few days.

It's good to be back albeit briefly!

Basically - our will is set up to go into a Trust... and that trust is a US trust - so no, I can't do whatever I want with the money. It can't be used to purchase property in foreign countries. Of course I could dispose of the house, assets etc. Stateside, but say I move back to Canada - I can do whatever I want with the money in the trust but not purchase property. I"m not sure exactly why or the hows about that, but it's the advise our lawyer gave us. Basically the money in a US trust can't be used for foreign property. Now could I dispose of the trust and will and start all over again with a CDN will? I assume I can... but that's probably a different jurisdiction and a different set of laws.

Hi everyone! Haven't been here forever but am no stranger to the K-1 visa journey. We're working on US citizenship for me, but hasn't happened yet.

Wanted to tell my friendly CDN family about our experience writing a will with me being a CDN citizen. We spent the big bucks to get it done right and our lawyer was great at helping us navigate through the murky waters of cross border marriage. He told us that I cannot be an executor alone on the will should something happen to DH. Basically a US citizen must always be on a US will. Since I'm not, my BIL will be listed on the will as a coexecutor. Once I get my CDN citizenship we can go back to the lawyer and change this (for a fee of course), but legally I can't stand alone on the will. AND the other big thing that they told me was that with the money that is in trust - it cannot be used to purchase property outside the US. SO.. there will be no going back home and purchasing land. I can do anything else with the money but purchase property.

I just thought those two stipulations were interesting and not something that I had thought of before. They may or may not be relevant to someone thinking about citizenship. My main reason for going for citizenship (so I thought) was to protect the funds in the estate from being taxed higher because I was not a citizen. It turns out that's really only for LARGE estates that taxation gets involved for non-US citizens, so that's no longer an issue. A greater issue now is to be an executor of my husbands' estate and to not leave that burden on his brother. Just food for thought.

Thanks everyone! No citizenship this year.. probably will try next year perhaps.. the money is going to other places this year.. not in a super rush for it, but it's on the radar!
