Sorry to hear about your ill sister.

RFE update is not always happening after they receive it and takes some time.

You can not re enter the country without AP. You should have filed, it's free.

If traveling to another state take your state ID, DL, marriage certificate and NOA1 from your 
AOS with you and passport.
We were picked out of a line to a connecting flight in Texas and asked for proof of being legal
in the US.
You used to be fine with just a photo ID (DL or state ID) but lately they have become increasingly 

picky with randomly asking people to show papers that you are legally here.
Ignore members that say otherwise.
File for AP still because you never know when you have to go to Nigeria for an emergency,
if you do submit a copy of your NOA1 for AOS aside from the other items.
It took my husband 2 1/2 years to get approved for his AOS.
