I had the same problem with IRS reports. The only idea I had at the time was to take the 1040 form and W2 for the missing year. Fortunately I was not asked for this documentation so I cannot say it worked.

I think you need a compelling evidence that your case is delayed beyond reasonable timeframe. I would assume being out of normal processing time is one of the conditions. Don't worry, once you file lawsuit your case will advance quickly.

I found that this group here: https://www.reddit.com/r/immigration/ can be quite useful and there are a few actual immigration attorneys providing useful info (but a few a-holes too, including immigration attorneys).

The exact advice largely depends on multiple personal details that are not appropriate to be shared on a public forum, details that involve your previous rejected case. It might be better to appeal, since if you do not, USCIS might use the same argument against you again, if you ever needed to sponsor someone in the future. On the other hand, if your rejected sponsorship, which you initiated in 2012, was not strongly supported by evidence, then it might be hard to justify your argument during appeal.

It is true that the answer 100% depends on the reason of denial. Some denials might involve things that "age out" i.e. if you reapply many years later then something you did more than 5 years ago does not matter, but there are things that will result in almost always the same result, that is, denial. Probably the most benign reason of potential denial is failure in maintaining residency in the US, which can be circumvented only be reapplying later, when you meet the criteria.

The problem is that if you make travel plans for a vacation, which for us, immigrants, frequently involves visiting home country, then the transition from a green card holder to a citizen might be messy. There is a short period of time when you do not have any travel document after the oath, and not all of us live close to a passport agency. Even without this issue, most of us would prefer not to delay interview or oath, because the wait time could increase by another couple of months, so the prospect of getting interview or oath letter while you are traveling is not appealing either...

If you are in background check, what would your online case status say?

Most common status is that "your fingerprint appointment was scheduled". Once you are good to go (background check cleared) your case status will change to "in line for appointment". Please note that some field offices are so backlogged that this phase (in line) might take up to a year.

It is true that sometimes online status is not updated. There are false negatives but I haven't heard about false positives (that is, when your status says you are scheduled for appointment, and this is not true).

It's too early to say that you are stuck. It is rather your wife that was extremely lucky. Some people are cleared right away, the rest of us, me including, have their background check cleared anytime between one month to a few months. My check was cleared 4.5 months after fingerprints.

Disclosing the country of origin in your profile might help other people understanding patterns in USCIS processing.

Many people report a movement around the anniversary. It seems some case are stuck in an administrative deadlock and they have a team at USCIS that manually goes through all old cases and they clear them if there is nothing wrong with them.

Congratulations!

I personally prefer taking photos myself and then ordering 4x6 prints for around 10c. A print like this will accommodate 2 passport photos. The advantage of this solution is that you can choose which picture you like most and you have plenty of time to decide (and the price is best too).
