  1. Interesting thread

I'll be in USA by the end of November if everythings goes well in our visa process.

my husband is living in New Orleans, LA and plans to relocate somewhere... Oregon (Portland or Eugene) comes at the top of the list... anybody has an idea about this city/state?? :)

    Najia

I'm sorry, I've heard nothing but negative things about Oregon...the weather, the economy, house prices, etc.

For those who like hot weather, I'd say Arizona. My in-laws live in Northern Arizona and it's just gorgeous there! Cool in the winter and hot in the summer. I'm going to live there once I move to the US.

I also love San Francisco...it's just a bit tooo cold in the summer for me.

And Portland, OR is a really great place, with lots of friendly people!

It does depend heavily on what kind of enviroment you want to live in.

    but for Najia:

I found Portland, Oregon to be the most wonderful place I have ever lived. It is incredibly picturesque, sitting on the rivers in a deep green valley between the mountains. The city is packed with beautiful parks with huge trees, rose gardens and fountains. The beautiful pacific ocean and the lush coast range mountians are an hour in one direction, the cascade mountains and the columbia river gorge an hour in the other. The local music scene is cool, and even if your not into the outdoors there are always tons of things to do.

It is a little city, nowhere near the size of Settle to the north or San Francisco to the south, and it benefits from that for several reasons: it's a cleaner place, with much more affordable housing, relaxed and friendly people, no sales tax, and the best public transport system in the US. The ecomony is about average for the US, not booming like some but not rotting like others.

The weather in Portland.... is actually very warm and dry for 5 months of summer, it only rains a lot in the winter. Winters tend to be short, mild, and green because temps typically average about 41 F and about 30 inches of rain comes down.... if your a sun worshiper, or allergic to trees, Arizona is definitely for you. ~Asha

... You eliminate for smell, that probably excludes Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota. That means the only places worth living in the U.S. are:

Maine, New York, Michigan, Washington, and Alaska.

 I can only assume the part of Michigan you sniffed was not Detroit.

and just out of curiosity, where does Utah rank on the smell-o-meter?

  2. The requirements only request a BC of the petitioner when it is being used to show US citizenship. It is not a requirement of the beneficiary. However, like with anything, an adjudicator can and will request anything deemed necessary in adjudicating the petition. Just as an adjudicator can send a request for an original of a document, when only a photocopy is submitted (being the requirement).
How often have people had this requested? I would be ok with adding a line to the guide such as:

    14. (Optional -- not required by USCIS guidelines) A copy of the foreign fiance(e)'s Birth Certifacte (front and back). There have been a few rare cases where this was requested to be sent in as part of approving the I-129F.

I do not want to add extra things -- saying optional will result in most people adding this to be safe and since this is not required per any published documents I am hesitant.

hum... I can see the hesitancy... as aussiewench says, they *can ask for anything they deem necessary*. If it is a rare thing and not a regular occurrence there's not much excuse for the mini freak-out  It may be more practical to add it to a list of RFE's received by members than the main guide.

  3. Wonderful, everyone! I badly needed this laugh.

    I would like to contribute:

An unfortunate woman paged by an individual with a sinus condition: Pam Candham

    my old neighbor: Fred Rogers,

and proof that some people are just born cool: Professor Ray Gunn.

  4. Well, Alex is the expert on the K-1 process, but as far as I have read, the birth certificate is not needed on this first part of the process.

Technically, it's not required, but they always seem to ask for it.

I got an RFE for the same thing a while back.

(Although my RFE said "the beneficiary's birth certificate AND/OR passport",

so we ended up just sending a photocopy of my passport.)

Alex -- what did I tell ya? :D

what!?! They send RFE's for the beneficiaries birth certificate?

I followed the directions on the 129F form and on the .gov site. Nowhere was i instructed to send the beneficiaries birth cerificate.

 If they wanted it all they had to do was ask!

Does anyone have any idea how frequently pettitoners are getting this bizarre RFE?

  5. Detroit, Michigan

a brief sampler of reasons why:

    bigots in the workplace

    bigots everywhere else too

    bedbugs infesting the apartments

    cockroaches too

high crime rate in every single category

massive layoffs in the local industry

    pervasive urban rot

    public school system in disarray

    corruption in the university

many days when the temperature is below zero

add the wind-chill factor of -20 too

car eating chuck-holes in most roads

    no safe public transport whatsoever

disgusting amount of pollution in the air and water

people have been fleeing detroit for a long time.

    don't even consider moving in.

  6. am so happy we were notified by email on 15th September that our case was approved.

was getting really worried that it was taking ages.

next week i'll be visiting my fiance.

i'm a bit nervous about immigration.

when i get there, what should i say?

do i say i'm visiting my fiance or just boyfriend?

do i say i'm going to check out possible wedding vendors?

or that i'm just coming for a vacation to see my loved one?

do i tell them, i going to see the priest who is marrying us and that we have to take a seminar before getting married?

i will ask my boss to write a letter for me, stating that i will be returning to work.

please can you advise me on the right thing to do.

i don't want anything to jeopardise my visa.

    :dancing: Congratulations!
