Everyone has different experiences calling and requesting info from L2 officers, of course.
Personally, I called and requested to speak to an L2 the day after I filed my application, which I got transferred no problem--left my number and got a call back from an IO about an hour later, and he was tremendously helpful.   USCIS always says "you've got to wait until such-and-such time" to talk to an IO, or phone to get a status update...truth be told, I think I've talked to an IO a total of 5 times so far since July. 
 
Again, wouldn't hurt to try---the worst they can tell you is to keep waiting...but the best they can do is give you more info on your case, too.

You know what don't even waste your time cause they will just have you on hold for a long time and then to tell you "your application is still being processed.. just have patience and trust me you will get it..
