We are from Toledo Ohio and my husband got his social security card without his green card.  Isn't there an option with CR1/IR1 to just receive the card by mail?  I'm not sure as we were a K1.  All they asked for was his passport with his visa in it, birth certificate, I-94, and our marriage license.  He got the card no problem.

hank you very much for your contribution......I went to the social security office today and I will able to applied. I was told that I am going to receive it in mailbox in the next 14days.

That's not right. I went to the Social Security Office and I applied for a SSN and they didn't ask for anything but my passport with the visa on it.

the stamp on your passport means you're a temporary u.s resident until you receive your 10 year green card.

i guess there was a misunderstanding. try to call the Social Security Office and ask them.

  3. I entered USA last week Monday with IR1 Visa. I went to local social security office in Toledo Ohio.....I was told by the officer there that I can't receive SSN unless I have my green card. I heard from other people from visa journey that they received SSN while waiting for their Green card. I just want to know how to go about it without waiting for green card. I was stamped in with one stayed inside my passport.

OP, did you check the box in the DS-260 that you would like a SSN to be done automatically got you? If so, wait a few weeks and it should come in the mail. If you dud t, you will need to go to a social security office and apply for one.

You don't need the SSN to start work. I arrived on December 19, started work on January 3 and got my SSN one week later. You can't be added to payroll without an SSN in most companies, but you can start working. Just show them the endorsed visa in your passport - that's your legal permission to work. I had to wait for my SSN to be paid but at least I was working already.

Thank you for your advice. I just want to know which state are u living? Actually I live in Toledo Ohio. Please u can contact me through my phone number for further explanation......4192808304

    hi

exactly, you haven't said whom do you want to petition

as a resident, you only can file for spouse and unmarried children

once you become a USC, you can file for the above, plus parents, siblings and married children

there are no petitions for indirect family members such as grandparents, aunts, uncles or cousins

Thank you very much for your reply

I married a Ghanaian in Ghana in August 2017. We have been dating for 5 years, with a trip from USA to Ghana for each of those years. We would like to apply for a marriage visa but want to present a strong application. Should we wait before applying? If we wait or prior to applying, would any of the following help our case:

    1) Changing my legal last name and documents

    2) Scheduling another trip to Ghana

The only proof of marital relationship since August that we have is joint land ownership and affidavits from US and Ghana. Should we wait to gather more evidence?

No. Five years is enough more than enough for you guys, you should proceed to file every necessary documents to move forward for next step. Every proof of marriage like photos, email conversation, WhatsApp chat history & video snapshot, sending of money history, receipt from any store, flight history. The majority proof should be done from USA. You can contact me through my number in case u need any help again. +14192808304

my wife and I only met twice in person and the last we met in person was in January, 2017.

When I went to the interview my wife didn't attend, and the co didn't even ask if she was there or not, he asked when was the last time we met in person and i answered January 2017. Then he smiled and said that my visa was approved.

P.S. i took a few screenshots of my wife and I's conversation and printed that out and brought it to the embassy, but he didn't ask about it. I told him that I had the conversations with me he said no and that what he saw was enough and then my visa was issued. :) just be honest and optimistic. wish you good luck.

That doesn't matter at all, my wife only visited me once and married, but we spent a month together during her visit. You just need to let your wife know everything about you and the relationship for the interview..... Try and make sure that you send USCIS and NVC proof of your marriage and other evidence. All the best in your process.

  8. I just want to Know if I still need to take photocopies of affidavit of support, tax returns and W-2 to the interview. I aware that i need to take photo copy of birthday, marriage, police clearance, & international passport page to the interview. Please did I still need to take the photocopy of tax returns, affidavit of support along to the interview.

    Hey Onileowo,

This mean that you have a CC. I would like to also thank you because I checked my case and I got a CC! Just please be patient and wait until you receive an email with your interview instruction. You can also call daily to the NVC for status update. I hope this helps.

I really appreciate you for your reply. I'm going to wait for an email from Nvc.

  11. I just checked my NVC case status and I observed that my Action required has change to "AT NVC".

Please follow the instructions you received from the National Visa Center (NVC) that list the six steps you must take before NVC can schedule your visa interview appointment. This includes submitting to NVC various fees, forms and documents. Once NVC has received all the required items, they will let you know if anything is missing or incomplete. You can also find these instructions online at http://nvc.state.gov (English) and http://nvc.state.gov/espanol (Spanish). You will find contact information for NVC at http://nvc.state.gov/ask.

Please I don't understand the meaning.

    1. Do we need to have police clearances from every country we have resided in?
    2. What is the validity of the clearance?
    3. Do we need new ones from those countries if we have previously obtained clearances and haven't returned to the country?

    Background:

My husband (South African citizen) and I (the American) live in Johannesburg, South Africa. We submitted Form I-130 at the consulate in Johannesburg. We haven't yet received our approval, but we want to make sure all our papers are in order. We acquired a list of what the consulate needs for the next packet (shout out to Jenny for giving us a preview of what may be to come!) and that list says police clearances.

We previously lived in Thailand for just under two years (2014-2016) and received police clearances from Thailand in June 2016. We understand the validity is typically one year. But does that include if we haven't gone back to the country?

You will need to get the Thailand police clearance certificate too because according to rules of NVC, any countries that u have lived on for an average one year aside from your own country, you must get their police clearance certificate from that country.

If you look at the spreadsheet, you will see that review process usually takes a couple days. Nonetheless, there are also cases that last a couple weeks to be reviewed. Not sure what makes that difference. My anticipation is your case will be completed this week. You are so close, hang in there!

Thank you very much for your response.
