I'm really disappointed and frustrated about the process and people who don't share their experiences in my country : TUNISIA ,
No one is actually guiding me except myself through this, I have been asking How to schedule an interview at the American Embassy in TUNIS,TUNISIA for K1 fiancé VISA
No one answered , Neither the Embassy Does, I called them/Emailed them several times and every time they pass me to the Immigration services where It doesn't go through and I get no answer..
I'm seriously pissed, upset and giving up.

THIS HAS BEEN ALMOST ONE MONTH SINCE MY CASE HAS BEEN READY on CEAC AND I GET NO ANSWER !!!!

    I'm disappointed SO !!

Waiting is not easy but, if you give up, it is no one else's loss but yours.  Just keep plugging away.  Squeaky wheel gets the oil.  :-).

  2. It varies.  To illustrate, My letter arrived 3 weeks after my interview (Oath was a week after I got the letter), although I already knew the date of the oath ceremony during my interview.  Others on here wait longer and I have heard of same day (as interview) Oath ceremony.

It could be dependent on how many people are ahead of you in terms of being recommended for approval and the frequency of the Oath ceremony in your area.

While I am still wating for my interview, I have a question.

I heard that I have to update citizenship status with Social Security Administration at least 10 days after the ceremony.

What about DMV? I don't change my name.

Do I still have to update citizenship status with DMV?

Anyone who became U.S. citizen in California updated the citizenship status with DMV even though name was not changed?

What form should I fill out?

    Thanks in advance.

I did not.  Am in CA.  No mention that that is required.

    Hey guys,

So I have my naturalization oath ceremony coming up in a few weeks. I'll apply for a US passport soon after. However, going the standard non-expedited route with my passport application has me a little worried.. I am very nervous about handing my naturalization certificate over to the USPS employee, as I fear it may get lost and never get mailed back to me.. Then there's the huge wait time and expense to get a replacement from USCIS.

Spouse and I are thinking of doing a little overseas trip to visit family soon, and we were thinking of using this opportunity to expedite my passport at the passport agency, which would help with my worries!

Am I over-worrying? And has anyone had any experiences in expediting at the agency? I'm guessing they would need to see my planned itinerary?

You might have reps from the Dept of State during your Oath ceremony (i believe it is stated in the letter).   If so, You can then apply for your passport right after the ceremony.  Execution fee is waived.  They will take your original NC but will give you a photocopy.  it is a scary thought that the original might get lost on its way back to you. But....that is standard procedure  - the original NC has to be sent together with the application form and the fee.  BTw, remember to sign your NC.   The normal processing time is 6 - 8 weeks but, more often than not, it is quicker than that and the passport book, passport card (if you opt to get that together w the book)nd the NC can possibly (which is more than likely) be sent to you in separate envelopes.   Am guessing they do that for security reasons.  Should 1 get lost, you still have the other 2 as proof of citizenship.  If the passport gets lost in transit, i wonder who shoulders the fee to have it replaced.

Passport agency might be the better option for you.  Might cost more but you get it quick.

  5. Passport is good to apply for as soon as you have been sworn in as that is 1 proof of US citizenship.  And if you have travel plans, it is good to have that done sooner than later.

One can apply for a passport right after you have been sworn in on your Oath ceremony (i.e. Same day) because that is the earliest you are categorized as a US citizen and that is the earliest you get in your hands the Naturalization Certificate that proves you are a US citizen  - which is a one of the requisites for the passport applicaton.

It is recommended to give SSA 10 days after oath ceremony but if you want to make a mad dash ??to the nearest SS office right after your oath, it is ok, too.  You have your NC in hand so you have the proof.  The rationale behind why you want to update SS is that previously, your data shows you as a non  US Citizen.  So it is good to update for a couple reasons such as:  for work verification and eventually for your benefits.   I believe one can get a new SS card in yoru mailbox as early as maybe 2 weeks after you update via your local SS office.

Some people choose to do the passport first, some choose to update SS first.  I think it is your choice.  The SS card issued to you as a Green Card holder is still valid.  That is not taken away when you have your data updated with SS.  Your SS number will stay the same.

Processing time for passports is 6 - 8 weeks although, in most cases it is quicker than that.  And even quicker if you opt to go the expedite route - just more money.  My thoughts are that if you are not travelling anytime soon, regular processing is fine.  Save the expedite fee for the passport card which is recommended to have.  I think sometime in the next year or years, the DL will not be enough as a form of ID going through passing security checks (airport), etc.  Passports will be the ID form that will be needed by then if not already in some states.

Depending upon where you apply, sometimes the execution fee is waived and there is a discount if you apply for both passport book and passport card.

You can register to vote same day as when you have your oath ceremony.  This can be done online, as well.

DMV update. I am not sure if this is actually required.

Best of luck!!!! And hope this helps.

Anyone having any luck with the San Francisco office?  My wife did the biometrics on 9/14/16, and we've heard nothing since... we emailed and in late Feb they said "Your application information has been entered into the system which schedules applicants for interviews at their local Field Office. Interview appointments are scheduled as slots become available at the Field Office.", but over a month later we're still waiting.  I know someone who applied literally at the exact same time and got their citizenship months ago, the waiting is killing us.  Should we try talking to a tier 2 officer or keep waiting?  Thanks for the help/advice!

I do not know how schedules are done.  i did biometrics end of October in Oakland; interviewed in January in San Francisco and am already done (oath ceremony). So it could be that after biometrics, maybe the background check took longer than other applicants.  When Background check results are back, it is probably then a case of finding a slot for interview.  Waiting is tough expecially if you have travel plans.

  7. Send what the checklist says.

The new Document checklist says that you only send photos if you reside outside the US.

My application was before this new revision (11/21/2016N) came out so I sent 2 pictures.  I saw those pictures in my file on the day of the interview.  I think that was how my interviewer recognized me in the waiting room.

My Naturalization Certificate had the picture that was taken of me during my biometrics; if I knew it will be on my certificate I would have gone for a hair and make up session.   :-)  :-)  :-)

Good luck to you!  Kaya nyo yan.

Thank u so much for replying.

They just asked for marriage certificate and some other documents but they didnt indicate whether they want original or not. I miss placed originals and couldn't find them. I called uscis and they said unless they ask for original, you dont need to bring original. Now i dont know what to do. I have copies of everything but couldn't find original.

If you have the time, you can go to the clerk's office or request,  via mail, copy of the marriage cert or a certified copy , i think is what it is called.  The requirements to secure a copy is normally published on their office's website so you do not even have to speak to anyone;  , might need notary work for the request.  Am inclined to think you have submitted a copy to USCIS in the past so a copy will be fine.

  9. The IO will go through all the questions in the form you submitted; it will help to go through a copy of what you submitted prior to your interview.  And the civics test...... to me, it was more memory work, especially with dates, names.

And of course, a gauge of your understanding and ability to read, write and speak English.

You will be made to read 1 sentence  and  write 1 sentence.

You can bring as  any documents as you like... whatever will make you at ease; but bring, especially, what is specified in your notice.  You will see, your file will be there in front of you so anything they might need as proof depending upon how your journey began and progressed..... they already have it.

Best of luck.  I will say, you will do great.   ?

  10. Bring all that is in the checklist.  And if you feel you need more, bring whatever you feel may support your "case".  Chances are the officer will not ask for more as they probably have all that they need in your file.  You will see, everything you submitted from your day 1 of your immigration journey will be in front of you (with the interviewing officer) on the day of the interview.   All that was asked from me during my interview by the IO were:  green card, DL and the Notice.  Am guessing those are necessary to verify that they have the right person in front of them.  You just have to be consistent with your answers and as always, be truthful.  The officer will go thru ALL the questions in the N-400 form in addition to the civics test.

  11. If you cannot contact your previous spouse, is there a way to obtain a copy of your then marriage cert?  or look  for the documents you submitted (if any) when you applied back then.  And.....you should know those by heart, if only for the N-400 interview as the interviewing officer will go through that same form.  This is probably their gauge if you answered truthfully.

anything that does not apply, put in N/A.

  12. My Oath was 4 weeks after my interview.  I believe it was only because there was a "special" ceremony not too far away from me.  The interviewing officer asked me if I was willing to go to that location instead of the usual location where Oath ceremonies are held for my area.  The oath ceremony there would have been 2 months after interview.  If you know the locations near you, you can probably gauge the timeframe granting on your interview, you know your success rate is 100%.  Interviewing officer will tell you and give you a paper indicating you are recommended for citizenship.

There are same day (interview-oath ceremony) instances.  Maybe you will be lucky.

From biometrics(fingerprint), it was approximately 2 months to the interview date, maybe because of the holidays that were in those 2 months timeframe.  Btw, no interview during biometrics.  Sign in....  you get the study guide (book and cd for the civics test); you wait to be called.  Then.... Someone takes your fingerprints, take a photo (which goes on your Naturalization cert)...which if I knew, I would have gone for a hair and make-up session. ???.  Kidding.

Bottom line, it probably depends how busy your office is.  But you are on the home stretch...Congratulations!
