No benefit after just before.  Once you get SSN you stop using the ITIN and it will expire on its own

I see.  Thank you.  My fiance VISA is expired and I changed my last name.  My last name is different on the VISA and passport.  so I am not sure I can even apply for ITIN or not.  I will see.

I just knew about it yesterday.  I am going to call if I can have one and if so, try to make an appointment.  Thank you.

Did you look to acquire an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) in lieu of an SSN?

Once if I get a SSN, what is the benefit to have ITIN?

I'm sorry that you are having such trouble with it.  Minnesota can be a little testing on one's patience at times.  For example, our year end MNsure renewal came up last month and I had to report that I was pregnant, which meant that I lost my Minnesotacare, but the only way I knew that was that they just sent a bill yesterday for half the normal amount for January's coverage.  I've yet to get any other paperwork about switching to medicaid for the duration of my pregnancy.  it makes me a little nervous because I am having my delivery in 2 months.

It must be so stressful.  So if you were pregnant, you can't have Minnesotacare?!  How do we know all of the things.

You'll find that people are nice to a point in the upper Midwest.  They will treat you with respect and be generally friendly, but not overly hospitable.  The issue with insurance is one that you will have to wade through.  Minnesotacare is a kindness that the state offers and they have their own policies about it.  The vast majority of states do not offer such a program.

I'll clue you into a little bit of acquired knowledge as I am also a transplant to Minnesota.  Minnesotans value hard work and independence.  They won't hold your hand through forms or processes.  They expect you to figure things out yourself.  They also expect you to be prepared and self-reliant.  This is especially true for transplants, they are waiting for you to fail your first winter or your next or to whine about living here.  You must meet the challenge of living here with determination and fierce independence.

Especially up here in the north of the state, I find that versus other parts of the country, you are expected to be rugged.  Any sort of genteel notions should be thrown out the window.

    Is your husband a Minnesotan?

Thank you for local reliable information.  It is much harder than I imagined but i can't go back or I don't want to go back.  I made a decision.  yes he is Minnesotan.

Culture shock is hard.  Do not let other people "steal" your attitude.  Remain positive, open, and friendly, and people (even some officials) will respond.

Treat each challenge as one challenge.  We have a saying here:  "Eat the elephant one bite at a time."  Approach and conquer each challenge one-by-one, and soon you will be surprised at how few you have left.

    Thank you for wonderful advice!

    Hi @R S

@nightingalejules is correct. You will now have to wait it out  (to get the social security number). So some things may be put on hold  (like getting a driver's license). However, health insurance is not tied to a social security number. You need to call the insurance company and explain the situation..they can re-establish your insurance on your husband's policy.... (my knowledge about this comes from arguing with the insurance companies for the last two weeks regarding putting my fiance/husband to be this Monday... on my insurance)

We called so many times and also come down to the office twice.   But the last day of coverage, a woman working at the HR said she is working there 18 years but their, state insurance policy never changed, if you don't have SSN, they cannot provide.  They could tell us at the first or first time come down there before my VISA expires or my insurance out of order.  It seems like they don't know what they are doing and they are irresponsible to me.

  7. Thank you so much!

You should contact your congressman and ask them to do an inquiri for you. Your EAD is out of processing time.

Sending the documents together would not delay your application.

I hope you get your EAD soon so you can apply for your SSN and DL. Good luck!

    @R S Hi, and welcome!

First of all, you're posting in the wrong forum. You need to be asking these questions in the AOS (Adjustment of Status) forum - I'll ask the moderators to move it.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that you didn't know you could have applied for a SSN while your I-94 was still valid (remember, the K1 is a single use visa so it expired the moment you crossed the border) - now you may have to wait it out (I didn't do AOS so again I'm not sure of the procedure)

Probably once you're in the AOS forum you'll get more detailed help!

Thank you so much for your help!  I wasn't sure which forum I should ask.

  8. I came to MN on May 25th 2017 from Japan with K-1, fiance VISA.  I married on June 13th 2017.  They received my I-485, I-131, I-765 on June 19th 2017.  I went to get done Biometric on August 2nd.  I got my insurance, Minnesota Care as a wife of American citizen from August.  I was kicked off of my insurance because I don't have my SSN.  I didn't know I should have SSN to have my insurance.  My K-1 VISA is expired August 22nd.  I changed my last name on my passport, so my expired VISA is attached my VOID old passport.  We were so busy to have our wedding in October and some important stuff for my husband.  I feel so shame.  I should have done better job.  Now I have to wait I-765, EAD to come.  I sent e Request on October 30th.  I finally got an email saying You should receive a decision or notice of other action shortly on December 8thHow many days is the shortly?  I need my insurance back and I want to start practicing driving again.  Do you think sending documents, I-485, 765, 131 together is making things delayed?  I want to feel American freedom.

By any chance did you happen to speak to someone at the insurance company and explain your case? I'm on my husband's insurance without a SSN, and all he had to do was speak to a supervisor to explain our case, and supply some paperwork to support our case.

Hi.  Thank you for your reply.  we called so many times and we came down to their office two times one time, on 21st of November a man said it is going to be ok and we filled out some paper works and gave them some copies of marriage certificate and my expired VISA and passport.  He said the old case is closing so I need to fill out papers to renew.  But we wanted to make sure if I still have my insurance so came down there 30th of November then a woman said you don't qualified.   You have to have SSN.  That is the policy.  At first, we got the letter says "You will lose my insurance on 30th of November" on 16th of November.  We went USCIS local service offices and insurance office.  We were trying the best.

  10. Hi, I'm 27 years old Japanese living in MN from May 25th 2017.   I came here with fiance, K-1 visa.  I got married June 13th.  We had our wedding ceremony in October.  It was crazy stressful but the day was the best.  We are taking things seriously and we were submitting papers ASAP with checking so many times.  But so many troubles soooo stressful.  The most recent issue is my insurance.  I was kicked off because I don't have SSn and my fiance VISA expired and I changed my last name on my old passport.  In this country, things are so different from Japan.  People are not so kind than Japanese.  I miss Japanese kindness and hospitality.  Nobody tells what to do.  We feel totally lost.  I hope I can help others and others can help us here.  Living in a different country is so tough.  Language, no friends no family, inconvenience.
