  1. I reside in AK but this is how it's done as far as certification is concerned. I sent an email to the board of education of AK to get this info.

First order of business is getting a Social Security card. Once you have that you can apply for certification.

The main parts you need to worry about are the application (should be online), the foreign evaluation (2. which takes place of the university transcripts and institutional recommendation, and the Praxis I Basic Competency Exam in reading, writing, and math (3.).

There are some other requirements listed on pages 7 and 8 of the application - you will be applying for the two-year option.

I emailed the Michigan Deptartment of Education yesterday and fortunately I got a response:

You will have to apply and be evaluated to find out if you qualify for a Michigan teaching certificate. To apply for a Michigan teaching certificate, you will be using the Michigan Online Educator Certification System (MOECS). The web address is www.michigan.gov/moecs. Once you are on the MOECS homepage, I recommend you read the document "MOECS Access Instructions for Educator Candidates" under the heading "Educator Applicants" in the middle of the page.

Once you have applied, you will be told how to pay the $210.00 evaluation fee. You will also be told the documents you need to mail in to be evaluated. As an applicant from another country, one of the documents you will have to provide is an original course by course evaluation report from a recognized evaluation service. The course by course evaluation report converts your course work and degrees into U.S. standards so that this office can evaluate you for a Michigan teaching certificate. The recognized evaluation services are listed below.

Once your credentials have been evaluated by this office and it has been determined you meet requirements for a Michigan teaching certificate, you will be emailed an evaluation report that will tell you the tests you need to pass from the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification to be issued your certificate.

So one state differs from the other in terms of testing and certification. I'm surprised that Michigan doesn't do Praxis. I appreciate your response! It's very helpful! Thanks!

  2. Good question. I'm a USC who's thinking about becoming a teacher and it's equally confusing for me, I honestly can't wrap my head around all the various certifications and tests needed. I think it's probably a good idea to get your degree evaluated anyway, just in case you need it for anything else in the future.

It definitely depends on what state you reside in. I hope another VJer with more experience in this field will post and enlighten us.

You are right! Every state has its own requirements and tests. I'm enlightened a bit since I emailed the Michigan Department of Education and called too! So the first thing for me is really contact the institution here in the states and ask the questions. Before I did that, I checked their website though but I couldn't find what I'm exactly looking for, so the best way I think is to email or call without hesitations.

  3. Actually, I asked a friend back home in the Caribbean to get me a sealed certified transcript from the college, yes it was addressed to Wes. However he was sending me other stuff, and the envelope for Wes was included in my courier package. So when my package came, I simply removed the letter/transcript and mailed to Wes. Be careful not to tamper or break the university seal, as this is what's really important.

Transcripts are sent or addressed from one university to another or in this case Wes. So even if u got the transcript and a friend coming from your home country was coming to the USA, they could take it with them then u could mail it to Wes, provided the seal is intact.

Also when u apply to Wes ask for mutiple copies at once if you're planning on sending to different employers or schools. You may also use ur copy that WES gives u as a first step but most colleges will want an original evaluation from Wes.

Finally, pay for the storage option with WES so that if u need another transcript u don't have to send all the way back home.

    Hope this helps.

P.S. I used text language but don't ever do it for formal correspondence.

Thanks for the response! I have my original transcript with me, university seal included but not on a sealed envelope. I brought it with me when I got in the US.

I was thinking of asking a family member to request an original copy of my transcript from my university, and seal it in an envelope and mail it to me in US. Im confused.

  4. Your institution in Phil must send your transcript directly to WES with sealed envelope. Or you can go to Phil, get that enveloped sealed, bring back to US and send to WES yourself

Your institution in Phil must send your transcript directly to WES with sealed envelope. Or you can go to Phil, get that enveloped sealed, bring back to US and send to WES yourself

The latter is a good option! Thanks!

  5. I'd just contact them directly and ask. I'm pretty sure he had to send his through the university registrars office.

I did but my friend told me that a faster way is to ask a family member in the Philippines to request for a sealed original copy of transcript and send it to my address in US, then I'll send it through WES. That way there won't be much delays. I appreciate your response!

  6. Hubby(the USC) has a Canadian associates degree, and applied to finish his degree here in the US. The university he applied to told him to go through WES. They did it really fast & accurate. https://www.wes.org/

Hi! I'm planning to send my transcript of records to WES for evaluation. Will it be okay if I send it directly since I have the sealed original copy of my transcript, or will it really be my university who will send the transcript to WES? Makes me wonder if WES will accept it if I'm the one sending instead of my university in the Philippines.
