  1. I read this on the N-400 instructions:

Photographs. Only applicants who reside overseas must provide two identical color photographs of yourself taken

    recently...

So...if you live in the states, according to the instructions, you don't need to send passport pics?

Thank for pointing out this change in the instruction. I did not read this information in new N-400 instruction. If it does say that, you are fine if you don't send them the photographs since you are residing within the United States :)

  2. Sorry, you have to pay for the Execution fee, and there is no Overnight shipping fee if you want to apply at Passport Agency. However, you must have emergency reason(s) which require you to travel within 2 weeks (proof of travel must present like flight ticket, hotel booking, etc.) OR you must need US Passport to apply for foreign visa within 4 weeks.

  3. Can anyone help ?

Yes. You can add up the passport book + passport card + expedite fee + overnight shipping together. You must write a check $25 Execution Fee paid separately or credit card or cash depending on the Passport Acceptance Facility like Post Office, Clerk of Court, Library, etc. (Unless you apply at a Passport Agency) Please note that the $14.85 overnight shipping fee is the OLD fee, the NEW fee for this service is $20.66. Check the Department of State website for the corrected fee: https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/information/fees.html

It does not matter if you pay by check or money order. They still need time to cash you check out.

    Good luck!

  4. You can register to vote and apply for a U.S passport right after the Oath Ceremony. Updating Social Security record, you might need to wait at least 10 days (I updated for my parents after 1 week) because Social Security Administration office wil need to check your U.S citizen record with USCIS, and USCIS needs time to update your record to their system. That explained 10 days waiting time. With voting, you can ask a voting clerk at your county, I believe that they might have some exceptions for those who recently naturalized. My county does, so good luck on that.

  5. Just make it simple. I found a definition for "Self-defense unit":

A self-defense unit is formed by private individuals who are acting without authority of the government and who are responding to crime or violence occurring in their communities. The self-defense unit is usually formed to help defend the community from the crime or violence.

As you described, you do NOT participate in a self-defense unit. So, don't worry. Good luck :)

  6. Story time!

So... I went to apply for a passport today... the Downtown Branch of the Houston Public Library on McKinney St. is very close to my home and would have been the ideal location, except that it doesn't open until 11:00. The nearby Post Office on the corner of LaBranch and Hadley in Midtown was the second closest and opened at 9:00 so I picked that one. Both braches accepted walk-ins according to their websites (no mention of appointments). I got to the post office at 9:15 and was 3rd on the list. I soon realized that each applicant was taking about 20 minutes and that there were others not on the list who had appointments. Those with appointments got to go in first, even if they arrived much later than those on the list... which was fair; they went to the trouble of making an appointment. I would have made an appointment if I had known I could; other facilities specifically said "by appointment" on their websites. The lady processing the applications was extremely unfriendly, yelling at people for various reasons; she yelled at one lady that her handwriting was terrible. Anyway... almost 2 hours later, I'm first on the list, but two more people with appointments walked in and at this point I realized that at best, it would be another 40 minutes and possibly much longer... so I left.

In the car, I realized that it was now after 11:00, so I stopped by the Downtown library, which was about 10 minutes away. There was no line when I got there although there was a family in the room applying for their passports. I waited for about 5 minutes (during which I applied for a library card) and then I was called in. The application process took about 5 minutes, during which the librarian came in and gave me my just-processed library card. I was in the building for 10-15 minutes and the two ladies I dealt with were incredibly friendly and helpful.

One odd thing: I thought that attaching my photo to the application with 4 staples was a bit excessive, but I guess they really don't want it going anywhere!

Hopefully my naturalization certificate will come back alright; unlike most certificates, mine doesn't have the printed biometrics photo on it, but has the photo I submitted glued on... I hope they didn't use cheap glue!

Since it's been a quiet week, I thought I'd share my experience.

Interesting Jimmy. I heared a lot of rumors about USPS so I avoid doing passport at USPS. Public libraries are Okay, but I guess they don't send out the application everyday. My friend's certificate get folded in the mail when they mailed it back, and she got mad about it, lol. I and my brother changed name, and the photo were glued to the certificate, my parents did not so the photo were printed digitally to the certificate. And yes, they use expensive glue :)
  7. Thanks!

I might apply for a passport next week.

Also need to register to vote, update my drivers license, and update my social security info.

I'm dreading the DPS visit for the DL; that's always a 2 hour wait in Houston.

I made an appointment to do the passport for my parents. Registered to vote. Since the DPS and SSA will need the updated Immigaration status from USCIS, we will wait until my parents get passport and update it later. And since you changed your name, Jimmy, you need to update it asap so it will be reported your earning properly to IRS. Once again, congratulations :)
