  1. I do not know of cases taking a year for the EAD. In fact, the USCIS has a tip sheet stating you can put in a service request if your EAD has been pending more than 75 days > http://www.uscis.gov/forms/tip-sheet-employment-authorization-applications-pending-more-75-days

If anyone has had to wait that long for the EAD, then it is definitely out of the norm and not the typical amount of time someone needs to wait.

Interesting. So K-1 people through CSC can be there in 3 months and start working within 75 days? Wowzer.

  2. What in the world are you talking about? That child doesn't need to be born here to be a citizen. And the mother doesn't need to have an "anchor baby" (rude terminology) to be able to stay here either---seeing as how she herself is a citizen.

Oh, I got confused, I thought the beneficiary was the pregnant woman. My bad.

However you must admit that having your baby in the US (as a non-citizen) is good for the baby.

  3. I doubt OP qualities for DACA, otherwise he would've filed for it and gotten temporary authorized stay.

Isn't DACA for people who entered as children (less that 17yo or so)? OP is married with children or at least he was when he entered.

  4. Also how does it work with regards to state? We live on the border of two states, address is in a state that does not allow same sex marriage, but we were just going to get married in Minnesota. I am presuming it doesn't make a difference because this is dealt with on a federal level and not state?

You must get married in a State where it is legal. It doesn't matter if you currently live in a State with discrimination.

The SCOTUS is going to review the situation mid year, I expect to see these discriminatory States being forced to comply with equality.

    Good luck.

  5. Insurance and finance is such a broad industry? What specialty do you have?

Were you more like independent sales agent of insurance/finance products/services?

Or did you work at a corporate job? .... doing what?

In any case, often foreign education and experience doesn't carry the same respect in US,

so you may be looking at one position below your last job...and perhaps this will give you

    edge over other US candidates.

You can also think of getting industry recognized certifications...like CPA, CISA/CISM...etc.

    depending on you background/interest.

Landing the first job will the hardest, but once you have few years of US experience,

landing subsequent jobs should get easier.

Thanks, my specific field was Actuarial work. My degrees were statistics, mathematics, finance, economics and so on.

My problem is that, as you say, the US is very different. I know this and expect it to be different.

I have no delusions of walking into the same level as I have been at home - that will never happen in my specialized field because nothing beats hands on experience and knowledge of local statistical modeling, financial instruments and insurance products.

I will definitely be looking in my field but in the mean time... I would like to earn money. I am not lazy.

I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens :)

  6. Hello everyone.

I was wondering if anyone could share some of their stories with me.

When I get my authorization to work in the US I want to start working as soon as possible. I have a degree and a post graduate one too and I have worked for around 6 years in the insurance/finance industry.

My English is very good so language is not a barrier.

Will I be able to find a "starter" job easily? I really don't care what it is as long as I am making some money.

    What was your experience like?

    Thanks

    Anna
