Are you applying based on 3 years of marriage to a U.S. citizen? In that case, you do need to send evidence of your marriage, such as joint tax returns. The evidence won't be examined closely till the interview so you can probably keep it to a minimum, but the instructions (see the checklist that RDan19 posted above) do say to include tax returns or other evidence referring to both you and your spouse.

As others have said, if your application is marriage-based, you'll also need to send proof of your spouse's U.S. citizenship, such as a Birth Certificate or U.S. passport.

OK, the N-400 process is wearing me out!. I read the N-400 application and N-400 instruction like 10 times and made sure I followed the instruction carefully. The "download N-400 instructions (242KB PDF) and download N-400 (614KB PDF)" both from http://www.uscis.gov.

Now, no where on the N-400 application and N-400 instructions tell you need to send in additional evidences/documents. I overlooked this part "For more information on the documents you must send with your application, see the Document Checkllist in the Guide"

If additional documents are needed, why USCIS did not include them in the N-400 instructions?!? Instead the additional required documents checklist guide were in in the "related links" section.

The problem is I sent the N-400 application, check, 2 passport pictures and photocopy both sides of Permanent Resident Card on May 7, 2009. I did not send additional documents such as tax record and/transcript, spouse evidence of US citizen and marriage ceritificate.

Can I send them the additional evidences separately including an explanation? Or will this confuse them?

I don't think you should send any additional evidence without them requesting it, since there's a good chance they won't be able to match it up with your file. Actually I can't remember ever hearing of anyone getting an RFE during the N-400 process, seems like they hardly look at your file before the interview.

I think you should just have the documents ready in case of an RFE, and if you don't get any request for evidence then just bring it to the interview.

About how much advance notice do they give you for bio appt? 2 wks?

It seems to vary quite a bit by local office. In my husband's case, the notice arrived a week and a half before the appointment (got the notice this past Monday, for appointment next Thursday). But I've seen others who had 3 weeks notice.

Although my husband (then-fiance) did already have an SSN when we married, I am certain you can get married without one. Many tourists get married here and the city government is trying hard to promote NYC as a wedding destination for both domestic and international travelers. If you have an SSN then you'll need to provide it on the forms, but if you don't have one, I am sure they won't prevent you from marrying.

I guess we should add you to our list as this means you are officially starting the process?

We sent more than just the transcipts to stay on the safe side, but my impression is that only minimal evidence is needed with the application itself. They don't really look at it closely until the interview.

Once you get to the interview, some of the interviewers are very interested in evidence of the marriage, so that's when you really need to be prepared with your proofs. And I have seen a few cases where people were told at the interview to come back with more evidence.

Hey folks...For those who have received your biometric letters: Is the NOA1 date on the list here the day you received your NOA1 or the priority date or notice date ?? Just trying to figure a rough estimate as I might be away for a few days in May.

I used my Notice Date.. It looks like most people used the Notice Date but a few used the date they received the notice in the mail.

For biometrics appointments, there might some variation depending on the backlog at your local ASC. But from your timeline, looks like you shouldn't have too long to wait!

MsAnn, one thing I thought of that might help: the N-400 on the USCIS website is fillable. I assume you have Adobe Reader? Or even if you don't, the program can be downloaded for free. You can download the N-400 form from http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/N-400.pdf and fill it out on your computer.

It doesn't let me. I can't click in any of the boxes. Maybe because I only have the free version, adobe reader?

I have the free version too, and it works on my computer. Maybe your Reader is a much older version? You can try downloading the latest version from the Adobe site at http://get.adobe.com/reader/ - or try a different PDF reader, such as the one KromiX suggested. You should definitely be able to click onto the boxes and fill them in.

If the "Resident Since" date on your card is 7/31/06, then the earliest you can apply is 90 days before 7/31/09 - which, by my calculation, means you can apply starting in early May.

I sent in my N-400 90 days before the 5 year requirement(My GC says I am LPR since 6/28/2004) but I sent in my application on April 2.

Does anybody know how USCIS works on applications sent 90 days before the official 5 year anniversary. I would think they would not approve the application but does anybody know if they do the legwork(finger printing, interview, etc) before the 5 year mark?

We also sent my husband's N-400 about 90 days before meeting the continuous residency requirement (3 years in our case). From what I've read, this is quite common, and you can have the fingerprinting done in advance. Some offices will do the interview in advance, and just postpone the actual oath-taking, while other offices will make you wait for the interview. Ultimately it depends on the policy of your local office.

I've been looking most closely at NYC timelines, and interviews here in New York are pretty much never scheduled within 90 days of application, so I haven't been too concerned about it. If you look at others going through the same office as you, it will give you a good idea of what to expect.

It says that a notice was left, but then on the next line it says "Delivered" at the same time as the notice was left. How can they both happen at the same time??? Something I just noticed: when I browse the citizenship timelines, if I try to filter by my local office (by selecting NYC from the drop-down), the first page looks okay, but if I try to go to pages 2 or 3, it removes the filter and shows applications from all the offices again. I think it's a bug and should be still showing cases from NYC only.

I've been through this process myself and can tell you the interview is usually a non-event. There's no test since she's already a citizen. Just a quick, perfunctory interview. They will probably go over the questions on the form again and make sure all documents in the file are complete. Probably will want to see originals of any photocopies submitted. Make sure you or your wife (a legal guardian) will accompany your stepdaughter.

The NBC does some initial processing, but the actual decision is made at your local office (Chicago). So you should be looking under the Chicago field office for the N-400 processing times.

But keep in mind the site is not always accurate as it might have a few cases that are pending for a while, but the majority might actual be processed more quickly. The date listed is usually for the oldest pending case in the system. Check out the timelines/threads here for members in the Chicago office jurisdiction to get an idea of your waiting time. I'm not sure if I should just PM this to Caption Ewok, but I thought I'd post this here because other posters might suggest other areas of the site besides the timeline/profile that need to be updated for naturalization filing location.

We just submitted my husband's application for Naturalization and noticed there are few timelines for naturalization here. I think the reason is that the timeline function doesn't give the current filing locations (Lewisville, TX and Phoenix, AZ lockboxes) as options. The filing location was changed as of January 22, and now those that live in the eastern U.S. send their N-400 to the Texas Lockbox and those in the western U.S. send theirs to the Arizona Lockbox.

Also, in my profile, when I select Naturalization as what I've filed for, there is no option to select the Texas Lockbox as the filing location. I chose NBC because that's where the application gets forwarded from the lockbox (before being sent to the local office for interview).

I would assume that if there are any guides, FAQs or references to naturalization on other parts of the site, they might also need to be updated.. but I'm not sure what other sections relate to naturalization.

One more minor thing: when I filled in my timeline for Lifting Conditions, I entered the date we got the green card in the mail, but when I click on my timeline link in my post, there is no "Green Card Received" row on that portion of the timeline.

Hope that this will be modified so that it might encourage more VJers to post timelines for these final stages of the immigration process. I can hardly believe we're almost done and my husband will likely be a U.S. citizen before the year is over!
