  1. Maybe it is an offer only available from Germany. How far do you live from the border? If not too far it may be worth driving over and dropping packages of at a German post office.

From Germany, DHL has flatrate shipping to the USA, weight based (boxes must stay within certain measurements).

    Here is the link: https://www.dhl.de/en/paket/pakete-versenden/weltweit-versenden/paket.html

I sent around 10 packages with 17-20kg each, per package it was 68.99 Euro (currently ca. 77 dollars). Packages up to 31.5kg are 94.99 Euro.

The packages are tracked and insured. In the US, they are delivered by USPS. Each of my package arrived in one piece (I taped them up very well and packed everything very good). No damages or losses, individual packages took between 7 and 15 days.

In Germany, they can be dropped off at any post office.

PS: Welcome to a future NJ resident, I am in NJ myself, up in New Brunswick, Middlesex County.

Thank you very much for this! I'll definitely take a look! And thanks, I will be moving to Mercy County and later on move closer to Newark :P

  2. How much do you have?

I have to move for two K-1 and K-2 and kind of figured out it would be cheaper to bring 4 suitcases of 23kg each and pay online fee for the ones we don't get for free. (max was 4 cases each and we get 1 for free) then shipping. It is so expensive from here no matter which service I have looked at.

My ticket allows me max 20 kg and I'll pay the extra 2-3kg in each luggage, I totally agree it is so ridiculously expensive! I'm planning on having my parents bring laughs full of stuff for me when they come visit

  3. I still have a bag full of things at my parents house I couldn't fit on my way here :P But I brought everything that I wanted to keep that couldn't be replaced. Important documents (vaccination papers etc), 1 photo album from when I was an infant (have plenty more but that one felt important).

Have you looked into air cargo companies? You can get a pretty good price with those if you are planning on sending a lot of things.

In my case, after all calculations back and forth trying to decide if I should bring things, send them or just leave them behind, I just decided to deal with an overweight bagged and pay for it. It turned out to be WAAAAY cheaper than I expected it to be. I flew with Icelandair that states on their website that they charge $100 dollars for an overweight bag, it wasn't even close. Ended up paying $40.

I've looked into the air cargo but I'm just afraid it would be risky? Do you have any experience and maybe can you suggest me a company that is good? The reason I'm a little concerned is the fact that with a cargo usually you share with bigger companies and not other people (unlike mail) and this would maybe result in a more rough handling of the packages and less guarantee that it will arrive intact.. Correct me if I am wrong of course :D

  4. I brought all my favorite clothes, books, household items, electronics...

I felt I was leaving my life behind and knew waiting through the AOS would be hard, so I at least wanted some things that make me comfy.

I sent quite a few boxes via DHL which was very economical (about 70 dollars per box).

That's really cheap! I assume they were lightweight/small packages? I just checked with the DHL price calculator and it ended up with an absurd price of $741!! 20kg

  5. Hi,

So I am currently packing and oh my I have a lot more stuff than what I thought! I almost feel helpless when I look at what I have that I would like to bring.. What did you guys bring to the us? What is something that you brought and realized you could've simply bought once arriving and therefore save some weight? Who knew moving could be so exhausting. I feel like I'm leaving parts of me behind. Sending a package from my home country to the us is the price of a flight ticket so I am trying to avoid that..

  6. My fiancé spoke to some colleges and they told him so - same goes for Rutgers http://nbregistrar.rutgers.edu/forms/ResidencyPolicy.pdf (can't link properly as I am on my phone)

"D. THE EFFECT OF MARRIAGE or CIVIL UNION: A non-resident student who marries or enters into a Civil Union with a bona fide New Jersey domiciliary assumes the domicile of that spouse or civil union partner for tuition purposes in the semester following marriage or civil union"

  7. well, it's been 2+ weeks, so :

    1. what did you learn?

    2. what's your new plan of attack?

    3. make any new friends at the admissions offices at the community colleges in that area ?

    1. As far as I've understood I will automatically become a resident when I marry my fiancé and show that I live in said state.

    2. Planning on applying for NJ colleges, as an in state student! :P

    3. I don't think they write "friendly" on the job offers for cc admission offices cause not that many have that quality, but hey I got my questions answered haha

  8. I'd rather be responsible of my own mistakes than have to blame a third person for doing something wrong. Yes, there are good lawyers but there definitely are bad lawyers - communication is the key.. Also, I do not need to spend any more money in this whole process than what is necessary and hey, I can also allow myself to be proud of my capabilities - I'm technically doing what a lawyer is, and so far it's been going smooth!

  9. Hello,

I have a question on how to ship packages to the US. I live in Denmark and in 15 days I will be moving to New Jersey, I am trying to find ways to send packages from DK to NJ, USA but so far the prices have been ridiculously high for a package of approx. 20 kg (I have not packed yet, but I am guessing they will weigh that much)

I have also looked into sharing a shipping container but I'm not sure how trustworthy it is.

    - any of you that have suggestions on how to ship packages at a realistic price (ie. not 1300+ dkk) ?

  10. For price reasons I am currently thinking of applying to a community college, I'm not sure which but would it make any difference as tuition is determined by residence/state and not by college? Basically what I'm asking is if a person entering on a K1 visa an marrying a certain state resident (in this case NJ) will he or she receive residency through the marriage or will the person remain out of state (and that way not really belong to any state for a year)

  11. Hello,

I will soon be moving to the US and among other things I am also interested in continuing my studies at a college. My question may be quite simple but what I would like to know is; if I arrive in NJ, am I going to have to pay for out of state tuition until I have stayed for a year? It doesn't make a difference that my fiancé is a NJ resident. I am basically an out of state student for the entire USA?

  12. Hello all,

this may sound like a stupid question but I am quite inexperienced when it comes to the whole wedding procedure.

I'm going to get married in New Jersey. I'm aware that we need to get a marriage license but what do we do after that? We would like a simple and quick City Hall wedding but how do we know which city hall offers weddings - is there a site with the city halls listed? Also, once we find a city hall is it necessary to find an officiant or is there already one at the city hall - any idea how much a city hall wedding costs (a part from the $28 marriage license fee)?

  13. Hello all,

I hope I make some sense as I am a little confused :-)

I have recently received my visa and was told that I would have till March 9th to enter the U.S. as my medical will then expire. Now I'm worrying that this also means that by then I will have to file for AOS - I might have read wrong but isn't the medical interview I did in my home country useful for a certain process in the us? What will happen if my medical expires before I file for AOS or during the filing process?

  14. I don't think I'm following, what do you mean with "considering that you have everything set and ready"..? ☺️

I hope Maria is right that they do more than one interview a day, haha. I'm doing the CR1 thingy, already married. Don't know if that's any different from K1 interviews or tourist visa interviews..

It would really suck to have to wait several months for an interview :( hubby's birthday is December 20th, our anniversary is December 26th and of course Christmas on the 25th. (And New Years..)

I realize now that what I said probably didn't fit in with your current situation as I am a K1 and you're doing the CR1.. My bad. And I meant one interview a day as in one K1 visa a day and so on.. Not one out of all the Visa's (I'm not sure you'll understand but as I said, don't take it into consideration as I was mistaken) good luck though!

  15. Hi everyone :)

The NVC received all our documents on September 8th and when hubby called they said that by October 10th they would have an update whether we need to send any additional information or if it's a case complete. I am so extremely nervous since it will seriously delay everything if we get an RFE... But trying to stay positive. IF we get a case complete, does anyone know approximately how long you have to wait for an interview at the Stockholm embassy? I am praying that I'll be able to spend Christmas with my love in our new house...

Considering that you have everything set and ready I unfortunately don't think you'll be able to spend Christmas with him. I'm not sure if the scheduling plan looks different for other nationalities but for me, a Dane, I received my packet 3 on September 2nd and the closest date for me was November 5th. I have a feeling they only do one interview a day since apparently everyone on here has had an interview at 8:30am and mine will be at the same time as well! (What I'm trying to say is that if it's actually only an interview a day, the appointment dates get booked faster)

  16. I'm pretty sure you'd be fine.. of course it helps/adds credibility to send photos with friends/relatives but I don't think it would be too big of an issue to not have any.. we only had one photo of me and fiance at his parent's house on Christmas Eve (only him and I on the photo but he added date, address and that it was at his parent's house that the photo was taken)

  17. Hi! I have two questions I'd like to hopefully get answered :)

After sending an email with a question to the Swedish embassy (ustraveldocs) I received an email today stating "Your case has been updated, please log back into your account to view the details". I do have an account on the ustravel/cgifederal (which I guess is where I'm supposed to log back in to) but when I log on I can't seem to find the details about my visa.. I only see Visa information, fee payment, family details, appointment confirmation and delivery address.. I was told in my packet 3 that I had to bring both an Italian and Danish police certificate when I only need to bring the Danish - I'd like to know if they updated my case so that I only have to bring my Danish police certificate or if they did something else.

p.s. I also scheduled my interview appointment today and I saw that at the bottom of the confirmation they say I have to bring a "personbevis - 120-personbevis med alla relationer" is it something only for Swedes or also for a Dane like me? :star:

    I hope someone can help!

I previously posted this in a Scandinavian discussion but got no replies - I was thinking that maybe the ustraveldocs site looks the same for all American embassies, so maybe someone here could help

  19. Just going to copy paste the email that I sent to the American embassy in Sweden (I'm posting this question on here because maybe someone can answer my question faster than the embassy, since the embassy is closed during the weekend :clock: )

Also, if someone has experience from the American embassy in Stockholm, the correct email to send them an email is via support-Sweden@ustraveldocs.com ? I've been told that they only reply via mail, so I want to make sure that I used the right email!

    Hello,

I am half Italian and half Danish (residing in Denmark). I am currently applying for a K1 visa and I recently received my packet 3, stating that I need to bring my “Original police certificates from Denmark and Italy” though further down I can read that this is only necessary if one lived in another country (Italy) for at least six months since attaining the age of sixteen. I turned 16 in Italy in May 2012 and moved to Denmark in September 2012 (I wrote the exact same information in all of the previous necessary K1 forms), which means that I did not reside six months or more in Italy after having turned 16. My question is, do I actually need the police certificate from Italy or was it simply written as a part of the guidelines for packet 3?

    Thank you in advance,
    Olivia

Hope you guys can help! :D
