    • Goldie, we are in the same boat as you (only we've been adrift for a couple of weeks longer).
      To keep the metaphor alive, today is the 40th day, and floods of biblical proportions are only supposed to last 40 days.
      We take turns calling NVC every day.
    • Aussie, big thanks for the horror stories! Grrrr.
      When my fiance reads this, I will have a hard time calming her down, as she has been barely keeping it together lately.

  1. As a newbie, sometimes you come across an abbreviation you haven't seen before, but that everyone else is throwing around without any trouble, and it takes a while to figure out what it stands for, or to look it up, and you might feel too embarrassed to show ignorance by asking. This can be especially difficult when English is not your first (or even second or third) language.

    (It took me a while to figure out that OP meant "Original Poster" - as in "Person Who Started The Thread", instead of being a reference to Opie Taylor)

    Well, here is a one-stop-shopping list.

    Commonly Used VJ Abbreviations

    • ACA = Agent of Choice and Address (DS-3032 form)
      AOS = Adjustment of Status
      AOS = Affidavit of Support (I-864 form)
      AP = Administrative Processing

      DHS = Department of Homeland Security
      DOS = Department Of State
      EAD = Employment Authorization Documents
      GC = Green Card
      ICE = Immigration and Customs Enforcement

      USCIS = United States Citizenship and Immigration Services
      USG = United States Government

      VSC = Vermont Service Center

    Everyone: Feel free to copy and add other often-used VJ abbreviations.

    Moderators: Feel free to move this if you feel there is a more appropriate place for it. (I didn't know where else to put it!)

    • It's not a stupid question, but it's a really simple answer.
      They use 2 different colours in an attempt to help people distinguish visually between Visa types.
      If you follow down the column of Visa types, every time the type of Visa changes, so does the colour.
      The confusing part is that some Visa types have only one line, while others have several, one for each separate kind of processing query.
      It would have been much more obvious to the eye if each Visa type had only one line, as then they would appear in alternating fashion.
      Hope that clears up the mystery for anyone wondering.

  2. If I may put my two cents in :)

    On behalf of all the people in countries with poor / agonisingly slow internet connections, PLEASE don't make a pinned thread.

    It is almost impossible where I am to jump pages into a thread thats been going on for 18 pages or so. I agree with Yodrak that many posts are speculative and I really don't want to wade through pages and pages of it to get to something that is important or fact. As you say Capt. Ewok, this will all die down eventually, I appreciate being able to see new info immediately as it pops up, for example the DHS info that a member posted.

    perhaps a pinned thread for 'discussion' of IMBRA for those who have the time to read it, while factual 'finds' are posted in K1 as they occur. When it all dies down consolidate the lot. By then everybody will be filling in new I-129F's anyway and it will be a moot point?

    • Hi, Lisa F.
      After reading your post concerning NOT pinning an IMBRA thread, I couldn't be sure how familiar you are with the available message board navigation features. (So please forgive me if you were already aware of the following tips.)

    When you log in, threads which have new posts added to them since your last visit will have
    ORANGE
    boxes (
    newpost.gif
    )displayed to the left of the thread name. Clicking on the orange box will take you DIRECTLY to the FIRST post made in that thread since your last visit.
    (This only works if you are logged in. If you log out and then back in again, it will only show orange boxes on the ones since you logged out.)

    When a thread has more than a few pages of posts, a special BLANK white square (
    pages_icon.gif
    )will appear between the end of the thread name and the white box for PAGE 1. Clicking on this blank box will prompt a script which asks you which page to jump to DIRECTLY. So if a thread has 99 pages, and you want to go to page 67, click on the BLANK box and type in "67", then hit enter.

    Note: As this post has nothing to do with the topic at hand, I was going to send this as a PM, but thought perhaps other members might benefit from this information also.
    About IMBRA, it appears to me that it will have a permanent change on the I-129F process, but as an ingrained part of it, such that in the near future all new applicants will be aware that it will be one of the steps between NOA1 and NOA2. My vote is: Pin for now (in K-1 section?), make a forum (or Sub-forum) if the volume requires it.

  3. Czesc wam wszystkim.

Konsulat w Montrealu zwalnia wczaz wiecej i wiecej, wiec mam nadzieje ze mi sie uda byc z moja nazyciona w Floridzie przed jesienia. (Chce tam byc nim wszystkie huragany przejda, bo to warto zobacyc, chyba!) Zobaczymy.

    Od 9-ego do 11-ego Czerwca w Syracuse, New York, bedzie Polski festiwal.

    No, i wielkie kongratulacje Marcin!

    (Jestem tez zadowolony ze to nie tylko klub babski tutaj - bo by mnie zabila moja nazyciona jakby myslala ze bede sie tu czymal tylko z paniekami! Zartuje!)

    • Depending on whether "money is no object" to you, and how much of a hurry you are in...
      ...you might be able to save a few months by taking the super-long and expensive flight to Canada so you can get your "name check" done in person. (I did mine a couple of weeks ago, and it took 5 or 10 minutes - after waiting in line for an hour.)
      Of course, this would only be worth it if you DON'T have any arrests on record in Canada. Otherwise, you would be wasting time instead of saving time.
      Also, I don't know what kind of identification would be asked of a non-Canadian citizen or resident. For that, you would have to ask the RCMP directly. No matter what, you should definitely call the RCMP to get answers to all your questions, this being not your everyday case.
      What would be tremendous would be if the Australian police could request the name check on your behalf. Surely there are cases where people are arrested in Australia and the police there request an arrest record from Canada and other countries. I just have my doubts that they would be willing to make such a request for someone asking for their own record (or in this case lack of one) so they could complete a visa application. Still, I don't think it would hurt to try. And think of all the time you would save. So, if you haven't already, I would ask the Australian police if there is any way they can help you. Who knows, maybe there is already something in place for cases like yours. Failing that, perhaps the Canadian embassy could help you, since technically embassies are an extension of "home soil" for each country.
      Sorry I wasn't of more concrete help, but hopefully one of my suggestions might pan out for you.
      Good luck.
      Aussi-Aussie-Aussie - Oy-oy-oy

  4. WOW !! Your very lucky to have been able to take pictures of the Embassy becuz I was told that they don't allow that for terrorist reasons.

    Raphael: Yes =) I was careful not to take a direct picture of the embassy doors. I shot those pictures from across the street. But I definitely wouldn't recommend running up front snapping pictures =)

    • I took some close-up pictures of the front door when I passed by, about a month ago, but they are still in my digital camera, because my hard drive is so full that I have no room to download. But now you're giving me the incentive to see about cleaning that up and finally downloading those pictures. (Oh, and after taking a few pictures, I was getting funny looks from the security guard, so I left quickly!) So I'll post them here when I'm done.

  5. Thanks Captain. I noticed it yesterday and like it.

    Hoever, I miss the "Overall Top 10 Posters" though. :unsure: Now you can't search other members like before. Is there another way that's just as simple? :huh:

    • Top right of screen, click on "Members"
      Scroll down list to bottom.
      Change to read "All Members" by "Total Posts" in "Descending Order" with "X" results per page.
      Click on the "Go" button.

    • MY fiancé got an e-mail this morning from NVC, acknowledging receipt of our application.
      Our NOA2 was from the CSC, and dated April 17.
      If they really do send them in batches, then expect to see more soon.

    Dear Madam,

    Your inquiry has been received at the National Visa Center (NVC).

    Please allow at least 90 days from the date on the approval notice (NOA2) before contacting this office.

    Regards,

    National Visa Center

    GMC/ban

    • (Get out your calendars, boys and girls, it's time for some counting!)
      If you entered on January 29, does that count as day one or day zero?
      Because wouldn't you say, on January 30, that you had been there one day so far?
      If that is the case, then April 29 is actually day ninety, by my count.
      (Then again, the quoted passage says "WITHIN" 90 days.)
      So even if the government disagrees with you, you can probably make that argument.
      Who knows, maybe it actually IS day 90, in their eyes.

    • My wife (otherwise known as my better half) and I were
      sitting in the living room when I said to her, "Honey, just
      so you know, I never want to live in a vegetative
      state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a
      bottle. I could not live like that!
      If that ever happens, please honey, just pull the plug."
      She got up, unplugged the TV, and threw out all my
      beer.

    • Hi guys.
      GSMaclean, I've been folowing your posts regularly, since you are ahead of me in this process, and pro-active. I feel for you, man. This waiting is not normal, and that's the truth.
      CaliDreamer, you know I am rooting for you, since our NOA1 dates are right around each other. I can't believe it's been more than 2 weeks since I got mine, and you're still waiting. So unfair!
      Flames, you're right (as usual), Vancouver should pick up the slack.
      Is there any way some of us could ask that our cases be transferred there? That is actually my intention, but I was wondering if others had done it, and whether they had to provide a "valid" reason, beyond the "frivolous" one of "Montreal is taking too long". I would be willing to spend the extra money to travel to Vancouver, even though I pass by the Montreal consulate every day on my way to work. (Anything to put an end to this endless insanity-causing waiting!)

    • I just went on Monday, here in Montreal.
      (I'm at NOA2, waiting for Packet 3.)
      I had to wait an hour for my number to be called, but after that it only took fifteen minutes and $25.
      That is assuming you have a clean record and your "Name Check" comes back without a hit.
      If you have a record, you will need finger-printing and can expect to wait several months.

    • Good luck to you, either way.

  6. Hi all, well we are on our way to interview soon, I need to send my I-134, but otherwise all is done and just waiting. We have planned to travel to the US in September, but what is my fiancee's plans to work out, and she needs an extension to the K-1? How hard is it to get, and what kind of circumstances warrant it? She is a student and very worried about her final, so if she for some reason does not pass, she will need to stay. Or, she can enter the country, and go back on a advance parole, which I think can last for up to 6 months? Of course she is going to do just fine. Sorry for lack of timeline, no internet at home as I am remodeling our new place. She is from Germany, and so far the process has been very fast.

    Thanks

    Scott

    • How long would she have to stay if she fails the exam?
      The way I understood it, once you obtain an approved K-1 Visa, you have 6 months to use (activate) it before it expires. If she fails the exam, but can re-do it within those six months, then there is no problem, just have her go to the interview, do the exam, then wait for the results. If by bad luck she fails, she would have until the Visa expires to re-do it.
      If that is not long enough, then try to get the interview scheduled for a week after she would get her exam results back, and push it back further if she fails and needs more time.
      Good luck.

      Bienvenue à Montréal!!!
      I hope you enjoy your trip and have a pleasant stay.
      Since your interview is on a Friday, I doubt you will stay the weekend to pick up your Visa on Monday, so I wish you a speedy receipt throught the mail.
      I would wish you luck, but I'm sure you have enough already, and nothing to worry about, in any case.
