  1. When I filed I-130 for my wife last year, I was a permanent resident. Since then, I sent a letter to USCIS asking to upgrade her to IR of US citizen. I also filed my AOS for her in the last week. About  a week ago, her application was sent to NVC for consular. I presume it takes about a week for NVC to transfer her file back to USCIS for AOS application. Is there anything I need to do now? Does anyone know how long it takes for the switch back to AOS and USCIS processing to occur?

  2. Hi all,

I came here on a GC in Feb, applied for jobs in my field of HSE for 3 months. In between that, I was working at McDonalds. Eventually in May, went back to the UK to see my son, whom I sorely missed.

Came back in June and the search goes on. I am so depressed that its taking so long. Everyone asks if I have US experience, but how do you get US experience in your field if you don't get the job in the first place.

Some of the outside state jobs that I apply for, they treat me as a out of state candidate, even though I have reiterated that I am willing to relocate/travel.

I was working in safety for a oil and gas client, but am willing to do safety for any client. I was working for many clients in the chemical, plastics, power, and nuclear plants on projects.

Is anyone else in the same boat and do you have any guidance on how to apply? I am using Linkedin and various agencies, but I feel the agencies have not been that great as compared to direct searches?

    Any help would be appreciated.

  3. The deadlines don't apply to those who have undergone "life events", of which immigration is one. I have heard it is either 3 or 6 months after immigrating that one needs to be covered by - not sure, we got covered almost immediately - but with the cost of healthcare there is no rational reason to delay getting insurance.

Thanks Susie!!! I googled it and it is 60 days from the event.

    Link here: http://obamacarefacts.com/special-enrollment-period/

Specific sentence here: An individual, who was not previously a citizen, national, or lawfully present individual gains such status.

So 60 days from landing date and you will be fine.

  4. Hi all,

Tried doing a search on health insurance for DV winners on entry to the US, but struggling. Right, so I entered on the 30th of Jan and am now in Texas. I keep getting emails about the Feb. 15th being the deadline for applying.

When I spoke to Healthgov, they told me that since I have no job at the moment, I should just apply, but most probably will not have to pay anything as I do not have any income. No low income either, so no chance of tax credits. My question is whether I need to apply before Feb 15; has my "life changing" time lapsed now?

Also, can anyone explain the difference between deductible and out of pocket exp. I understand copay. An eg. would be brialliant.

Also, in Texas, what is the UK equivalent of emergency medical care? Or do they start hunting you after you get out? I presume I would have to pay in the region of $100+ if I had to go see a doc. for a simple visit?

    Help please.

    thanks

  5. very informative. The car i was planning to take was from a garage where the guy has many cars on the lot, and he just gives it out on month to month rentals. so the car is presumbably owned by him/the garage.

so not sure why he said that i need to get the insurance for the car. perhaps he owns the car, but have not insured it to save money? so he wants me to have the car insurance??

  6. No that's not fully comp. its just the liability one. I'm planning on using a car from a garage which the agency gives out to people for a nominal rental fee. So the car is owned by them. so in that case, the minimum liability would not be sufficient right, as its not my car?

what if my friend here loaned me his car? what is the portion that I need to take? His car would have the minimum liability. so in this case, would I need to take any other PERSONAL insurance?

  7. Hi,

So I finally reached Houston - first part of the great american dream sorted. Now, i'm trying to find a job. Trying to get a rental car but struggling with car insurance as I have the UK license.

I can only apply for the TExas license after 30 days, does anyone know where I could source a cheap car insurance for myself. Prices I'm seeing are coming to in excess of $150/month?

    Any ideas?

  8. Hi,

Right so the final week is here and I am traveling from the UK to the US on my DV visa.

My wife and kid will be traveling a bit later, so the question I have is: I am only to carry my SEALED envelope and my CD (X-ray) only. I presume, me being the principal applicant doesn't mean that I have to carry my family's documents...correct?

    Can anyone clarify on this?
