The short story: 8AM Interview today. Passed. 130pm Oath ceremony. Done. Citizenship is over. Applied in June 11 to Phoenix Office, Interview & Oath Taken in Seattle office on Jan 11. There is a symmetry to that.

Gory details follow:

0757: Parked

0800: Passed Security line and got the Q ticket number

0803: Sat in 2nd floor waiting to be called. (yes, 3 mins late

)

They have a monitor in the 2nd floor on the left that says how interviews are progressing. When I walked in, it said scheduled interviews were running within 15 mins" 15 mins was in red. I figured that was a nice way of not admitting they were behind schedule

0815: Called in by a very friendly, fun, young and professional lady.

Qns asked:

1. Capital of Washington State

2. In WWii who did we fight?

3. Who/what do we pledge allegiance to when we take the oath?

4. What is the national anthem of the US?

5. What is the supreme law of the land?

6. What is an amendment?

7. who vetoes bills.

PS: The answer to question #4 is not "Stairway to Heaven". It should be. But it isnt. Boo.

0825: I Was told that I passed, I was asked if I am travelling in the next 2 months outside the US. I said I was travelling in the next 3 weeks - and that I have an appt with the Passport agency the next day am. She smiled and asked if I assumed I would be taking the oath the same day. "Uh Yeaah" (Apparently not everyone gets same day oath, since slots get full; so the 2 month travel qn is to help prioritize the ppl who are travelling vs who arent, so that the ppl in need are given priority. Makes sense!).

I was given all the forms confirming my passing the tests, the recommendation from the officer and a letter for the oath ceremony the same afternoon. And officer asked if I had any qns. I asked if she had any recommendations for lunch.

She complained Burien was the "boonies" and doesnt haev the same options for healthy food as Seattle, but pointed me to go to Southcenter mall and see what i could get.

0829. We were done, and I was escorted outside

0833 I was back in the car - going to SouthCenter Mall.

Infact there is a LA fitness there at the Mall, so hung out there for a few hrs, had a few skype calls, lunch and time to go back to the USCIS.

For the 1315 Ceremony, details:

1309: Parked

1317: Finished security and went upstairs (there was a big line naturally in security) There was a briefing there asking you fill the back of the form given at interview. Asking qns like if you got divorced/married since interview, travelled anywhere etc etc.

1322: We were moved downstairs to the auditorium to get seated in a very specific order (with preassigned seats)

1400: The ceremony starts

1404: They sing the anthem (No. Not Stairway to Heaven.

)

We are told 99 ppl from 40 countries are now going to be transformed into 99 ppl of 1 country.

1416: Oath done.

1420: Judge Doanhue was chief guest gave a speech about hope and oppty (Which was the point of Stairway!!!)

1426: Obama gives a speech. (video, nevertheless Wow. What a speaker!)

1430: Pledge of Allegiance

and then a big parade like in primary school. as we line up to get the certificate.

1453: I get my certificate

1500: Its all done and we are sent out.

And that, is a wrap.

Finally. A text mssg, email and online status update to reflect that "On December 4, 2015, we scheduled an interview for your Form N-400, Application for Naturalization. We will mail you an interview notice." The mail is usually slow from USCIS to Seattle, so probably shd be here by Dec 14th for a Jan 4th interview.

By Seattle standards, that is "on track" with the velocity at which they have been moving through their backlogs in 2015.

I've just returned from the Social Security office to update my citizenship status. It took 31 minutes from check-in. When you get to the check-in kiosk, select that you are there for a card. If possible, you should have an application for a new social security card filled out. When called to the window, state that you need to update your citizenship status, present your application, your ID, and if available your current social security card.

The agent asked me for my naturalization certificate, but I offered my US Passport Card instead, and was accepted without comment. He punched some things into his computer, and handed me a receipt. I should get a new card in 2 weeks.

Now for a logical qn. Why isnt this automatic?

Is there a scenario where a new citizen doesnt want to update the social security office? (like how you could argue a new citizen could choose to not get a passport)

When you get the naturalization certificate, shouldnt that just kickoff the social security update action-item and your updated social security card shows up in the mail automatically?

The whole going to the SS Office, standing in line, using an SS agent's time seems a colossal waste of time, effort (and therefore tax dollars). The alternative is a hands-off scenario.

I applied for citizenship ( 5 yr) on June 2nd along with my wife and got our FP done July 2nd. My information online has not changed except states that USCIS has received the application in June . My wife has already received updates and had her interview oct 2nd (Chicago area). she is waiting for her oath letter.

I still have not received any updates on my online status and it is still stuck at application received. Do they update status at each step ( should I not be updated to FR done ?)

Also is this normal that 2 people apply at same time and one gets the interview and other stuck at FP level?

anyone else in the same boat?

We are in chicagoland area

Did you submit the G-1145 with both applications?

Are both of you using the 5 yr citizenship or one of you on the 3yr married one?

Any misdemeanours/citations that make one application a bit more reviewable than the other?

Not that the answers to either of the qns will definitively explain the differences, but it might atleast put your mind at ease (a bit).

Reading through the forums for the last year or so - one does see such differences in approvals happening.

But the most common one ive seen is where regardless of G1145 being submitted or not - they just dont update things online, and you dont know much till you get the letter of invitation for interview.

Question: how long does it usually take after you get an email saying your in line to schedule an interview do you usually get the actual letter and how long does it take for interview

Depends on the # of ppl in queue before you with a PD date ahead of you, and the rate at which your local office processes those applicants.

For instance, from what I see - in Seattle (and chicago) - it's about 6 months from In-line to interview (7-8 mths from PD date).

For Dallas its about 2 mths from in-line to interview.

SFO feels more closer to the Dallas timeline than Seattle based on data. But the short consultant-type answer is "it depends". ;-)

As the interviews keep coming in ... might be good to note that one of the questions (out of the 100) typically asked is the "Who is the speaker of the house".

And with John Boehner resigning - we need to update that answer!
On that note: When do the new mayor and state representatives be appointed, since the local names are often asked for as one of the qns as well?

Ha-ha! Ain't that the truth. All in all we are beginning to wonder if I should have moved to Scotland instead of Hugh moving here.

My wife has her way with me as well.

So I have some empathy for Hugh. Though he might just have been running away from the Lochness monster.

And if you read the previous sentence with a Sean Connery voice, I am all done with parading my Scotland ignorance :-D.

Dear GOLFER:

My husband had his biometrics taken July 6th, too, and just like you we have heard nothing. Nothing has changed online...it still says his case was accepted June 17th.

Obviously these people have no idea how frustrating it is for all of us. I am convinced that my husband's file has been sitting on some bozo's desk since mid-July, but then he went on vacation for a few weeks, then had to spend a few days filling out his fantasy football forms, then he took the kids to the State Fair, and then his sister got married, and, boy, he had to hang out with the guys for an hour or two every day and complain about all the work that was piling up on his desk.

Nothing else explains why other people who applied to the same service center (St. Paul) at the same time my husband did have already taken the oath!!!

"Processing in the order received," my foot! They should be ashamed. Except, of course, as I mentioned earlier, they don't have any idea what we are going through.

BTW, my husband is 74 years old, retired, never had so much as a parking ticket, worked for one company his entire career, and moved from free health care to our abysmal system. Oh, he also moved a considerable retirement savings to America with him. Obviously not the sort of person USCIS wants in this country!!!

Thanks for the opportunity to blow off steam. Thank God when this is over...and it will be, someday, right?...we will never have to deal with USCIS again.

You missed out the part where the scotch in this country also pales in comparison ....

But for a study - there are free apps on the appstore (ios and android) that you can download. They work without internet on a plane; and work as flashcards to help you prepare.

Personally I find that a lot more effective than the pdf because of the dynamic interaction. But the hardcopy book with its explanation is most fun

I got my interview and passed on 08/31 but I was told that a decision cannot be made, and yesterday received the oath ceremony letter for 09/14.

Just curious. What was the reason given, when you asked why a decision cannot be made?

Thank you, thank you, GOLFER and kovacs!!!! I don't know why I thought we had to stay in the US. Maybe a carryover from visa processing days. Well, let the travelling commence!!!! Yay!

I see that others on the thread have already corrected your misinformation

The doubt you might have had is that if you are traveling and didn't show up for your interview (like traveling for 2 mths and didn't know Abt the interview date, and couldn't reschedule it) then your n400 can be considered abandoned. But I don't travel for more than 2 weeks at a time, and they give you 4 wks notice for the n400 interview typically, so not that concerned.

Red flagging a green card holder for applying to n400 doesn't make sense at all. But am glad, you ranted and got a clarification and can now travel and not feel like your life is on hold by the govt. we are well past that point

I called just now. I was surprised how quickly I could get to speak to a real person. However, that person only read off the info I already knew including that the St. Paul office is currently working on December 2014 applicants. Wish we lived in one of those fast-processing states! It is SO maddening that we cannot plan anything because we do not know when his interview will be. I should mention that we are both retired and travel a lot. We have already given up a trip to Glacier Park this fall because we would have crossed into Canada.

I know, I know, we are lucky to have the time and money to travel when most of you are young and struggling. But we were once young and struggling, too. And now, after many, many years of hard work and sacrifice, we would like to be able to enjoy these years that we both saved for. (My husband is 74.) But instead we are stuck at home, waiting.

I see your state, and wanted to share what we are doing. We went with a "YOLO" policy - just made plans and are travelling.

I applied in june, BIO-ed in July; am going to Jordan next wk; UAE and India In Nov.

My current projection is to get a letter for interview arnd 8-10th of Dec; and then an interview in 1st wk of Jan. (Slow state in Seattle; spokane, eastern WA is quicker)

Ofcourse they could do that during the travel as well, but i figured if that happens, i will call in for a different interview slot than live a life based on govt scheduling :-)

The indecision because of the uncertainties can be super frustrating; so we are just travelling, and figured IF we have an issue - we will figure it out then. Not say NO to life in anticipation

Same email I go at the beginning of this week. It just means "In Line for Interview". Which for the Seattle office means "Try to be patient for 3 more mths for getting scheduled for an interview"

I got another update today for TESTING and INTERVIEWING, they are telling me that they are sending me the appointment letter, we do not have a "field" for it.

No even in line for interview I call uscis and they say they still waiting in FBI background check I don't had no criminal Record I don't know why they talking so long

There is no need to get anxious or waste time calling the FBI.

I had applied in June 10th along with the online update form. Even signed up for text and email updates.

I got my fingerprinting done on July 1st.

For 8 weeks, till Aug 9th; the only online update I had was that they had gotten my application.

6 weeks after my fingerprinting - today the online status changed to "inline for interview". I had signed up for txt updates as well, but only got email updates.

Summary:

Dont call the USCIS, or FBI. Relax and let them do their work.

They are not going to do it faster because you called them, neither will the call make your anxiety level go away.

I am sure your case is fine, not lost and they will get to it when they do.

The website showed that Orlando field office is back logged as well but I got my interview letter for August 31. So it doesn't mean anything

LOL. u are sweet.

My comment on Seattle office being backlogged is based on thread-information and qns ppl have asked over the last 12 mths. There was a spate of retirements and they took a yr for the new crew of young'uns on board, who had to be trained before they could do naturalization interviews. Hence the backlog.

18 mths ago when i applied for my wife's GC it took a flat 75 days from application to getting the US passport in hand; these days it takes 6 mths to get inline for an interview and then some

But then Seattle office is so backlogged, not expecting an interview till Dec/Jan.

Should be pretty easy for you to figure it out accurately yourself

Just look up the April/May Filers threads, go to the last post in the thread, since the tracker-thread is cumulative.

Visually Filter the list based on your ASC city.

and then for those look at the days between the FP and interview.

Add that to 7/7 and you should have a decent estimate of your timeline.

Living in the Soviet Union doesn't make one immediately a part of the Communist party. Sure the country was (and still is Socialist) had communist ideals, but its different from everyone there being in the communist party.

When I filed for my wife (who also spent her life till early 20s in USSR), I didn't even think twice about saying NO to this.

Her (late) dad was part of the communist party and was active. Her mom helped him, but wasn't part of the party (as in she didn't go to the meetings or was invited to decisions - or even had the membership card). My wife knew what it means to be in the party, and what it doesn't - and was clear she wasn't In. Okay so maybe I did think twice ..

I am sure lots of ppl would debate this and say that she was indirectly involved etc. But I felt like it was pretty clear in my head that she wasn't in, and stating that she wasn't was the complete truth the way we felt. And that is all we could do.

She is an American now for over a yr. The whole naturalization process from application to passport took 75 days.
