A quick tip for job searching. The unemployment office will most likely be able to help him find a job. They have a lot of resources, and it's not just for people who are collect Unemployment Insurance. Also look up job core.
For cheap apartments, check out craigslist. If it's just you two, you can look up an efficiency, or even a trailer. They're usually much less expensive and it's better than living in a toxic environment.
Do your best and try to remember that it's not you, it's them. They have their own problems and issues and you're both just the 'whipping boy', so to speak.
Your husband can collect state/federal benefits for just himself (like food stamps), if I am not mistaken, but he cannot for you. So there's another option as well. Every little bit helps.

Thank you PerditaD. Reading your words of support, even not knowing each other, is very helpful. In time of crises, I think everybody needs people who are there to listen.
Wish you all the best too.

So sorry you are going through that If at the moment you two have no other choice then try to play by their rules since that seems to be the only way they would give you a break. It seems that trying to reason with them isn't really an option. Also, be there for your husband, it must be very tough for him to have parents like that and to have you witness all that. Also, maybe help him search job ads, search the papers, search online.
Be strong, I know it must feel like hell but it's only temporary. Hopefully your husband will find a job soon and you'll get your EAD soon so you can move out and let your fairy tale finally begin.
    Wish you all the best.
PS - Keep posting here, it helps to be able to talk to someone. There are plenty of people who are happy to listen and help as much as they can, me included.
    Take care!

Wow, tough situation there. Shish...just amazes me when I hear of parents like these. I can't imagine myself in a million years treating one of my kids like that...no matter what! Were the parents against your marriage in the first-place?
I applaud your self-restraint. I know it's hard to hold your tongue and keep a positive attitude in this kind of situation but just hang in there since you have nowhere else to go for now. For God's sake, once you are in a position to get out, please do. Dont wait to afford anything fancy, just somewhere to lay your head IN PEACE. Things will get better.
