Hi all! Just came back from my oath ceremony. Everything went easy and smooth-ish (it's a lot better if you show up at least 30 minutes before; the security line was GIGANTIC!)

69 people from 32 countries were naturalized today at the Baltimore office, and it was a very solemn event! People cheered and clapped and the guests booed to the president's message (everyone laughed). 

It is DONE! I'm really grateful for all the advice and comraderie that I found here. I'll try to check in periodically here if you want to DM me or something, but I think it's time for me to pay 100% of my attention to my wife and kid.

Hi all!

I have some interesting information for those that may need it.

So I had my interview on 12/13 and it got approved. The officer said my oath ceremony would most likely be in 2019, which was great because my family was getting together from all over the US and the world for Christmas and New Year. First in years and not sure when we'll be able to do that again. Anyways, the point is that I got the letter saying that my oath ceremony was scheduled on December 31st! I'd be out of the country then so I kinda freaked out.

To make things worse, USPS was taking longer to have mail sent, as it's usual in the holiday season, so by the time I had to leave town, I hadn't received the letter (though it had been up on my account for a while), so I thought I wouldn't be able to request to reschedule the ceremony. After considering cutting my trip short and come back for the ceremony (losing ~1k on booked trips, and spending another grand on new tickets), I decided to call customer service. The rep said that I could send a certified letter requesting the change with a copy of the notice, not the original!!! (PHEW!). He also said I could scan the request and upload it to my account! I did both for peace of mind and headed out to my trip - worst case, I'd head back home.

My certified letter made it to the Baltimore office on 12/26 and on 12/27 I called customer service to confirm my upload was reflected in my account. They did, but when I asked if I'd get some kind of "official" confirmation that they received my request, I couldn't get an answer. However, the representative told me not to change my trip plans and that I should get a new appointment sometime soon. I believed them and I continued with my plans. 

I didn't receive anything until 1/3 that I came back to the states - it's almost like they knew I made it back to the country that I got the text saying that my ceremony was scheduled!

Anyways, I wanted to share this in case it was useful to any of y'all! I finally have my ceremony (that I can make!) and I'm happy the online tools and their service was great!

I did get a lot of notifications yesterday about passing quality control, being in line, and finally that the letter with the date for the oath was on the mail. I still can't see the document, though.

Hi! Not yet, but the agent (officer? interviewer?) said it's most likely going to be in January. Based on other filers' dates, it seems like they usually book the date 3-4 weeks after the interview, and she confirmed there are no same day oaths in Baltimore anymore.

Thanks! I'm so excited this is almost over.

I printed everything and anything that I submitted for my n400 plus my 2017 tax return (tip, bring original and copies) since I filed after applying for citizenship, and the papers that were requested in the notice (Green Card, passport, wife's passport, 1-94, expired visa and temporary green card, original marriage certificate). I didn't bring my son's birth certificate, and while it was not a big deal, she said it would've been good that I brought it. 

That said, all she asked for was my passport, current GC and ID. So a lot of printing for nothing but peace of mind. Also, if you've left the US since you started you immigration process, make sure you print, or memorize your travel history. I printed mine from here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/#/history-search. Use your current passport number and it'll link to any expired ones!

I also brought any "important" information from past filings (AOS/ROC) but again, it was not necessary.

@jay21, how did your interview go? It's crazy we may have been in the same waiting room without knowing who we was who

Before this it consistently showed my completion time to be January 2019. huh.

Pretty sure it's a glitch... hopefully.

I had my interview today at the Baltimore office. Came with my wife and 3 month old thinking that they'd come with me, but when I got called (10 minutes before my 3 pm appt), the agent told me to come on my own. She was super serious, I was super intimidated and we went through pretty much all my n400 application. She changed the fields about my having a kid (bring their birth certificate!), asked about my international trips, where I work and basically the whole n400 form. There was one thing she asked me for evidence and I didn't have (of ALL the things I *did* bring) but she didn't seem to mind too much - I totally forgot what it even was.

Once she was done with everything, she asked me the civics questions, oral/written test, filled something on her computer, handed me a paper and said "congratulations". With the most serious voice ever. She walked me out and that's it! She said my oath ceremony should be in January. By 3:20 I was out!

I can't believe it's almost over!

I have a question: I am applying basis on 5 year resident. My letter states that I need to take my Greencard, passport and the letter; right bellow it says if you are applying as a spouse of a US Citizen, bring your marriage certificate, divorce decree and proof of citizenship. Should I take all of this or just the paperwork required at first?

  

I'm taking everything and anything I have submitted since my first application. I don't want to take my chances. For my personal case, that means marriage stuff.

Did your statuses update on the case status website yet (this one https://egov.uscis.gov/casestatus/landing.do)?

It did - I got a text message with the notification. The scanned copy of the letter took a few hours to upload, though.

I was surprised not to receive a form reply from John Cornyn, which I did receive from Mike Conaway. In its entirety:

So what I expected, for the most part. It probably even sounds dumb to most people that I would even send something like this, and to Republicans too, for whom immigrants are not exactly a top priority right now (other than trying to get rid of them and make life harder). But I do believe that fundamentally we (all of us) deserve an immigration system that benefits us all equally. There should be no patchwork of someone whooshing through the process because they happen to live in an area with 5 people and a cow, while others who live in major metropolitan areas sit at 1 year+. Regardless, nothing will change based solely on what I think, but this is a democracy and my representatives are lucky enough to receive my thoughts - whether they want them or not.

 

Oh, and I said there were two things. The other thing was that the app I use to monitor my case showed an update... but it turned out to only be an update to a case adjacent to mine, not actually my own. But perhaps that's a good thing; maybe they're getting close to me. Based on timelines from other Dallas filers who filed at the end of last year, I may hear something by the end of next month. And that would be great. At least lots of others here are getting movement, and that's a good thing.

@Hypnos, I totally understand your frustration! According to the table, the majority of us have waited the same as you (and who knows how many more people are going through this without using VJ). However, I think it's unfair to think that it's not benefiting us equally.

As I understand, immigration cases don't work on a first-come-first-serve basis; the main reason why is that people are applying under the 3-year rule, some under the 5-year rule; some of us are over 18 but under 26, seniors, disabled and a large etcetera (https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/USCIS/Resources/Citizenship & Naturalization Based Resources/A Guide to Naturalization/PDFs/M-480.pdf), so the pool is way more nuanced than we think. Furthermore, the cases seem to also be considered based on our local office (the number of applications that they receive) plus the country we are coming from, not when our application was submitted. To put it in context, Mexicans amount to 13% of the naturalization applications and North/Central America and the Caribbean amount to 34.5 of all naturalization cases (source). If this was worked on in a first-come-first-serve basis, your case would be way behind just by simple math (UK: 1.3% [#1 for Europe]; Europe: 9.9% - see last source) and I'd already be a citizen. Plus, I don't see where the assumption of people living in an area with 5 people and a cow holds up - would you mind pointing me to it?

Sadly this is not fast, but no one told us it would be. Clearly, the current administration, and other obstacles to naturalization have created delays and red tape around the whole process. Like you, I live in an area with a LARGE immigrant population;  you and I are from the #1 countries that apply for naturalization in our regions USCIS-wide and therefore we are in line, in our queue per region, per country, per field office, apparently. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ceremony was great. Arrived at 11.45am for 12.30pm ceremony.

Family and friends went through to be seated, then we all lined up 10 at a time to go through to the room, hand over green cards and be seated.

Ceremony started around 1.30pm (there was a delay because a few folks had issues such as having lost Green Cards since the interview [the guy in question was still naturalised, so if this is a worry for you, take heart!])

The first USCIS representative got up, warmed up the crowd with some "USA" chants and went over the contents of our packets ("your voter registration form is the most important thing here! It is your right AND responsibility to vote!")

The judge then rose, we sang the national anthem and then she said a few words. We watched a video about America being a "land of immigrants." The judge said a few more things about what an important occasion it was etc. We each stood as our nationality was called and then said the oath together. We pledged allegiance to the flag. We watched T's welcome video...and this Lee Greenwood "God Bless the USA" video complete with shots of America and cowboys riding into the sunset etc (and the lyrics, so you could sing along if you wanted...!)

Then finally we lined up and were called forward to receive our naturalisation certificates...and it was all over.

 

Surreal to be at the end of this journey. I sincerely hope the rest of you reach this point very soon.

 

 

 

 

Congratulations!!! I'm happy to see some movement in Baltimore! Seems like the whole experience was very unique!

Hi everyone, just checking in after my interview in Baltimore this morning. All went fine and I was "recommended for approval."

After the initial stuff, we went over my application. We made a couple of amendments where I had made mistakes on the original N400, such as saying I had been married twice by accident (note to anyone else in this position: don't panic, like I did last night! You can fix it at the interview!). The officer changed this without any problem. The officer was also not concerned that I could not find my expired UK passports (which you are technically required to bring). She just asked me about my travel, and any foreign travel that had occurred since I submitted the application. Finally I informed her that our outstanding taxes (from 2014, when my husband failed to pay everything he should have done for a contracting job) have finally been paid off and she copied the transcript that showed that.

 

I can't remember all the questions I was asked, but it definitely included these 3:

1. How many justices are there on the supreme court?

2. If the President and Vice President can not serve, who becomes President?

3. What did the Declaration of Independence do?

 

I was asked to read the sentence "What country is to the south of the United States?"

The office gave the answer and I was then asked to write "Mexico is to the south of the United States."

 

She smiled and said I had passed. Sadly no oath ceremony today, but it was nice to see the large, smartly dressed groups of families all gathered for their ceremony. We now wait for the notice on the oath. The officer advised that it would be "a few weeks."

 

ps. I found the video on the USCIS website that provides an example of the naturalisation interview to be helpful as I prepped yesterday. It meant that no part of today was a surprise. (https://www.uscis.gov/citizenship/teachers/educational-products/uscis-naturalization-interview-and-test-video)
