  1. Hi - First - I did not read those links (today anyway) so I am answering from my specific circumstances and memory.

I was told it would be a very difficult thing to do and it was far from it.  Basically, your car needs to comply with both federal and state requirements.  I moved from Ontario to North Carolina.  I went to Mazda Canada website and requested from them a letter stating that my car did indeed meet those requirements.  They sent me that letter as requested and I expect it took about 3 weeks.

So, I drove my car when I crossed with my visa.  My husband went ahead in his car to a friend's place in Buffalo.  I do not recall that being even on my mind, but I expect I had that letter with me though they were not interested in it.  When I registered my car here, the officer told me that many people did not even have that letter (but you do need it).  I needed to go to a part of the DMV where they do car registration which in NC is at the DMV but is a different section than where you get your drivers license  They took the letter, inspected my car (walked around and kicked the tires) and approved it.  In my case it was that simple.  We did not register our cars here until we had bought a house and had a good idea as to the lay of the land.  You also need to get a local drivers license for which they likely give you a road test.  This also varies by state.  I have had to renew my license 3 times already and I see 2 more in the next 2 years.  In NC, they will not extend your drivers license beyond the life of your residency on paper.

I hope this helps.  If you have any other questions, I am happy to do my best to help out.

I have attached a link to Mazda Canada's contact page - they even have a section for import/export.  I expect that your car's manufacturer has a similar service.

  2. Thanks NLR - I was pretty sure that leaving the US until the AOS is completed was a bad idea (tough because my dad is aging and infirm, but I will insist with him that he stay well during that time :) ).

I will ask. Is the interview the time and place to ask such questions? I had already thought to ask about about what might be done should my dad fall gravely ill. The between having been granted the visa and actually using it just occurred to me.

  3. Thanks for the updated responses. I was very concerned about the expiry date so I am pleased to hear that Soapies.

On another note, I am curious as to why one would think that ir1/cr1 should take priority. I am not trying to be argumentative but the comment kind of got my back up because we could chose what was supposed to have been the fastest method, regardless of the higher cost. We could have just as easily gotten married first. Maybe the comment got my back up because I am getting stressed which really is wasted energy. :)

If it isn't obvious, there are still no appointments available in Montreal that I have come across. Same with you S2BMZ?

  4. I am in the same boat (which seems odd to me because my friend got his packet 4 the day after he submitted his ds-160 and then was given many options to choose from (this was a week and a half ago).

What worries me most is that on the original petition there is a section on the top left corner that says the petition is valid for 4 months. For us that means the middle of December. Does anyone know if that date applies to the next step or the whole process?

  5. I am not worried about CBP - I am Canadian and currently a Canadian resident so I think they care not what I am doing in the US (unless i am bringing too much stuff back). it is just entering the US that gives me pause in this process. I gather since when filing the initial K1 petition, they do not ask for my SIN number or passport number, they do not know I am doing this yet, right? In either case, I am armed with property tax bills and utility bills, as well as a voter card and a doctor's appointment scheduled in July and August. Hoping that will suffice for now. Next time I take my dad to the doctor, i will ask him for a letter stating that I am dad's primary caregiver as well.

Whirlpool is great! I just got notice yesterday actually that you can use EZ pass at all the Niagara bridges, except Whirlpool. You need to put money on your Nexus card at the US-side kiosk the first time (you can just put on 5 bucks) and then you can add more online subsequent to that first time. Anyway, I have never seen more than 6 cars at Whirlpool and that was long due to construction or something.

Regarding the church of Wegmans. Wegmans give me so much Joy. We are along the lake just beyond Angola, so it really isn't on the way, but we will likely be moving shortly to a place that is very close to Orchard Park. This pleases me greatly. Wegmans and Premier Wine!!!!

  6. Wow - I can't thank you enough for all your responses.

Loki_Go, I was referring to the K1 email. I have loved my Nexus card for several years now.

Krikit, Rob is currently in the Angola area so I have been using Peace for the most part. if I am travelling North or East, I use Whirlpool if Rob is not with me (he has just recently applied for Nexus). If he is, we have used Rainbow since Lewiston has been such a mess over the last few years but I think they have improved just recently.

I am so pleased to hear the using nexus is acceptable.

Does anyone know the point at which the border people know that the K1 is underway?

PS - I never lie. I am fundamentally a rules person and frankly, they have the authority to take my car; I like my car. :) Oh, and they can take my Nexus card which i also like - a lot!

  7. Hi all - we just received email notice of receipt of our original application today (so I expect official notice in a week or two) - Yay!

Does anyone know if it is okay to use Nexus for visiting as we move through this process and/or if I need to make any adjustments to it? Currently, we are Buffalo/Toronto so we visit back and forth really often (almost every weekend). We also have tons of summer plans in both countries. I have my Toronto House tax and utility bills so I think I am prepared to establish that I will be returning but I just do not want to make any border crossing mistakes.

    Any ideas?

  8. Thank so much NLR. Rob trusts you because you have a Jeep :)

Regarding documents, thanks re; originals. However, I cannot see what documents we might be required to fie. Would these things be divorce decrees and death certificates to prove that we are both free to marry? Neither of us have been previously married or have criminal records expunged or otherwise so this type of thing would not apply to us - I guess I am worried that we are missing information for the initial filing of the 1-129F.

  9. Hi - Rob and I are about to file our 1-129F and have a few questions.

We have been officially engaged for almost a year, have been dating for 2 years and have known each other for over 10 years. :dancing:

    1. Re: question 36 - From Toronto, Canada, does anyone know definitively which American embassy locations we should use?

    2. Re: questions 3 and 29-30 - What is the difference between these questions? Might it be assumed that I have both a mailing and then home address?

    3. Re: question 28 -address where my fiance intends to live - Rob travels for work so using his current address may not be current even by the time the document is processed. We used his mother's home address as his address and thought we should do the same with this entry. We intend to buy a home once we are settled (and married). Does this look like a problem?

    4. Re - later - does anyone know if, once the visa is favorably processed, I (the Canadian) will be permitted to travel freely between the 2 countries?

    and finally...

The instructions say to submit original documents and all evidence, yet the 1-129F does not appear to ask us for any supporting documents or evidence? Have we missed anything?

Thanks so much, Laura and Rob
