Also I think CSC 751 adjudicators are more experienced and deal with them in a more straightforward manner. VSC seems to send out a lot more RFEs even with a decent amount of evidence, as if their adjudicators are following a script rather than being more practical.

As I said on another post earlier today, this question comes up so often, it probably should be in a pinned thread (if anyone around here knows how to PM the admin, might be worth doing). Here is what I've noticed from our collected experiences:

1. The number on the first NOA (the one acknowledging receipt of application) is an internal (to USCIS) number only. It won't work on the online case status system.

2. The number on second NOA (the biometrics appointment letter) is the one that shows up on the online case status system.

3. It takes a while for the status online to be updated. Some have an active status before the biometrics letter shows up. Some don't appear until after the biometrics appointment. Some don't appear until after the approval of the case (yes it has happened).

The case status seems to have no value beyond lessening our anxieties. Its nothing more than an acknowledgment that your case exists (which the NOAs prove anyhow), and since the only thing that's ever posted for the 751 is receipt of application and approval of application, it really doesn't tell you anything about progress.

I have a new theory as to why there are approvals slightly out of order. I have a feeling cases are assigned to officers by location of applicant. There was a block of approvals a couple of weeks ago and all actually lived in California.

Get a letter from your landlord saying he's aware the two of you live in his/her place. You can even write the letter, put in your landlord's contact details (so you can spell names correctly), just get your landlord to sign it.

I got my biometric appointment on July 18,2008 in Atlanta office. After having the finger print done, the officer told me that I could expect my 10 year green card in 2 weeks. But now, after almost 2 month, I haven't heard anything from them again. I called the USCIS, and was told that the biometric appointment was only the first step to go. It doesn't mean that my case has been approved. But I swear that the officer in the Atlanta office told me that I can go home and wait for my card through the mail! Anyways, I was wondering what I should do now. Should I just wait to hear from them? How long will it take to get an interview letter or an approval letter after the biometric appointment? My old green card already expired and the one year extension will only cover me until next February and I want to travel abroad sometime at the end of this year. But I don't feel comfortable travel without my new green card. Any suggestions? Thank you!!!!

The officer probably thought you were renewing your green card rather than removing your conditions. If you're removing your conditions, you can expect to wait 1-3 months (CSC) or 3-9 months (VSC) to get your new card, barring any interviews/RFEs etc.

A lot of people? Do you mean you filed in June 2007? In that case, make an infopass appointment.

If you mean 17 June 2008, there's maybe 3 people on this board who filed around the same time as you and have been approved. That's not a lot, and they should get around to you soon.

Its going to be good weekend alright. I'll probably double check my receipt number again when I get home. And I hope that card production ordered really means card production ordered .

I renewed my driver's license last week just in case I didn't get approved before it expired, oh well, that's the least of my concerns now.

Also my latest theory about how they work on cases. I have a feeling all cases from certain dates get assigned to a particular officer or group of officers. Hence we will see a group of people being approved in a block with a block behind them waiting a little bit longer.

I understand your frustration . I have a feeling that they've probably de-prioritised the case status system, perhaps at least during the summer. My receipt number still shows up as not existing more than a month after biometrics.

I'm willing to let it slide if they are working on the actual case

That date is supposed to reflect the earliest case not yet processed. Its not unusual for it to go back a couple of days here and there, I have a feeling that they look at the last few in the pipeline.

A more realistic date might be the bulk of cases currently being processed. From the list we maintain here, there are people being approved who filed in late May.

New processing times are up. CSC is listing 751s as January 2, 2008. I think that's a month ahead of last month's update (I think it was Dec 2007?).

That letter is the one with the number you can use. You might be able to call the hotline/make an infopass appointment to find out what that number is. I'm sure they can find it through your A number if you're really keen.

The Vermont service center is still just getting to applications from last September. If you filed in December, don't worry too much at this stage, they won't get around to approvals for December for a couple of months yet. You can see the VSC timeline here:

No, you don't need to notify Social Security until you have a change in your status - receive the 10 year card. (I checked myself and that is what the Social Security office told me).

Why would you need to tell Social Security when you get a 10 yr green card. I would have thought that there's no difference to them if you're a 2yr green card holder or 10yr green card holder. They both have the same rights to work and be paid etc etc.

The only time you'd have to tell them would be when adjusting status from a non-resident to a resident.

I typed in the number and here is what I see: This Receipt Number cannot be found at this time in this automated system. I tried many times and I know I am entering the right number. What can this possibly mean ? Have they lost my case ?

If it still doesn't work, I still wouldn't worry too much. I did my biometrics over a month ago, and my number still shows up as not existing. If you're really worried, call the USCIS hotline, and ask to be elevated to 2nd level support, they'll probably just tell you your case is still being processed and not much info beyond that.

The other thing is, you're at the Vermont Service Center, where they're still just getting to applications filed in September last year. If you filed in December, they still won't get around to them for another few months at the current rate.

I have read somewhere that CSC staffed much better than any other office. They just have more people working there; here is the speed of the process.

Actually - I did that. I took the percentage of populations for each of the states adjudicated by CSC and totaled them - California handles 44.05% of the population based on States and territories - which means that VSC handles 55.95% of the workload. That works if it is based on population. CSC handles caseload from 4 of the top 10 most populated states (California, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan) which provides 25.2 % of the population; VSC handles caseloads from 6 of the most populated states (Texas, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina) which equals 30.35% of the population including some of the most industrialized areas which would provide heavy employment based application workloads. I still say that the division of labour is unequal and that is part of why VSC is so swamped with work they can't process it in a reasonable time. I will admit that there is also a good degree of inefficiency involved as well.

I think there's also an experience issue. CSC seems to approve applications more reasonably than VSC, ie burden of evidence seems more reasonable, based on the anecdotal evidence of the RFEs being sent out by VSC. I think the CSC officers seem to be more realistic about what kind of evidence to expect.

does not seem to be the case. Right now CSC appears to be approving petitions filed with CSC directly (not transfers from NSC), which were filed 3-4 months ago.

According to our list yes, but I'm not sure its a general rule. We have a block in April where they all appear to be from NSC which aren't approved yet, but that could be coincidental. Other NSC filers seem to be getting approved around the same as others who filed at the same time (eg lovelove and BrianBellingham).

Your evidence looks quite good in terms of 'kinds of things', I'm wondering if they want to see the entire time since you've become a Conditional PR. (Although I must say that with the lease and the tax returns, that's pretty good).

Perhaps the absence of joint accounts made them send a generic RFE. If worst comes to worst, you can explain everything, they can't compel you to live your life in a way that USCs don't.

Yeah we don't have alot of joint stuff from the time we got the greencrad and moved from Hawaii to Oregon, until the time we bought the house (which is about 11 months)--except for the car insurance and joint leases and tax returns. Frustrated.....................

Perhaps that's what it is then. I bet they sent a generic RFE based on evidence coverage, rather than lack of evidence. Still, car insurance and joint leases/returns is pretty damn good evidence, especially considering you moved from Hawaii to Oregon, which isn't exactly easy to fake a relationship and move that kind of distance.

Unfortunately, you may have gotten an adjudicator who's a bit of a stickler. If it makes you feel better, a lot of people who respond to an RFE usually get their approvals fairly quickly after they send in a response.

But Jesus, I gotta say there's a huge difference between adjudicators. Another poster, still happily married, got an RFE with much more evidence than yours, there's so much randomness in the system. (Not putting you down by the way, just amazed at the breadth of experiences).

I believe seeing in the USCIS manual somewhere about the percentages of people selected for interviews. I'm sure everyone has heard about this before, but they assign one of three fraud levels, C for obvious fraud, B for there is evidence but possibly not enough, and A for most likely not fraud.

I believe they randomly select a certain percentage from groups A and B for interview.

From some examples I've seen, most couples are interviewed together I believe, and the one Kathryn mentions is probably like she said, a 2nd interview if they're still suspicious.

I saw some example questions posted somewhere a long time ago, might post them if I find them, but I did get a little concerned when I saw them, things like 'What kind of toothpaste does your partner prefer?', 'What color are the curtains in the living room?' etc etc. Once you're in the situation though, I'm sure legitimate couples will be ok. I'd heard that they actually get more suspicious if your answers are too perfect. I, for example, have no idea what color the curtains are
