  1. I'm just about burned out for the day trying to gather all this info, reading these forms, checking off what they got so far, making phone calls to civil surgeons, etc. My mind is already muddled and can't think straight. Need help translating into plain english what these two vaccination records say, and what it means in regards to AOS.

Any help would be appreciated. Much mahalos!

So far, I've come to the conclusion that figure A will need:

    • TDap
    • Measles update
    • Mumps update
    • OPV/IPV update
    • Help B
    • Varicella (update?)

Just want to verify if I'm correct so far. I'm very tight on money right now being sole provider and want to minimize Dr visits.

  2. You don't need the SSN to get married or file for AOS. You also do not need to wait 2 weeks after arrival to apply for the SSN. Once married and you have the marriage certificate from the court, then file for AOS.

File for AOS in married name, and include the EAD and AP for mother and child. Get SSN for child when they receive their EAD/AP card.

    Ok thank you!

Get married > File AOS-EAD-AP under married name > Get SSN whenevs

We can apply for her SSN anytime after receiving marriage cert?

As for the K2 I'll: Wait until married > Get him under health insurance > Wait until EAD/AP approval > Obtain SSN > Acquire some form of ID other than foreign passport (???????) > Enroll him into school

  3. So many issues and switchbacks and hiccups and runarounds, starting to get a headache....

K1 and K2 just arrived 3 days ago, however I've been trying to lay down the groundwork before their arrival.

Called school and of course they need health clearance/physical exam

I called HMSA health insurance, they told me they won't cover them unless US Citizens/married to mother

Called a clinic and they told me they can't accept the only form of ID they possess, which are Japanese passports (and DL for mother), so the K2 can't get an appointment

Not sure what I'm supposed to do next.

Does this look right for the k1 flow?:

Get SSN > Get Married > Change name on SS card > Apply for AOS

Thank you for any advice. Getting burnt out doing all the legwork all these months and especially now that all these snags are coming up all at once.

  4. I've been over the guide a billion times and still going over it again but also want to get confirmation that I'm tracking.

    Checklist:

    1. wait 2 weeks, apply for SSN (for both K1 AND K2?)
    2. Apply for marriage license together
    3. Set marriage appointment
    4. Get married
    5. File for AOS (K1 and K2) & EAD; and maybe AP
    6. ROC

    Health Insurance:

What do I do? Looks like insurance from work won't cover them until I marry her and adopt him. I've never had to seek health insurance as I've worked pretty much all my life. Contact a provider directly or go through Health Connector/Obamacare? BTW that family coverage cost is a killer......man.

  5. 10 days?! Oh no I am nervous! We booked a flight for 9 days after the interview........

Dregs did your fiance interview in Osaka/Kobe? (just looking at your timeline)

Nope, she had to make her way to Tokyo all the way from Okayama. Apparently they don't do K1s at any location other than Tokyo and Okinawa.

  6. So, sent petition in the mail April 4th (04/04/14), it was approved 11 days later. She got her visa in hand August 8th (08/08/14). It could've been even earlier if she had made the appointment for her medical as soon as possible but she had to wait about two weeks. Did any other Japan filers have a fairly fast turnaround time?

Interestingly, I told fiance her interview day is not supposed to be more than 2 hours long. She got there 8am and It took her all day because when she was finally called up they told her to come back at 2pm because there was a problem with our case. She went back 2pm and watched the entire room empty before finally being called up again about 4pm. As you could probably imagine, she was a bundle of raw nerves by the time they were ready. Interview itself was a breeze but the interviewer expressed surprise at how fast our case flew through the pipes.

She'll be here mid October and I'm stoked as all hell but I wonder how weird our case is and if it raises any flags. Just worried about the next step. I wonder how close our case was to getting denied or dismantled or really anything negative on that interview day. Maybe our case was actually a disaster but someone behind the scenes decided to piece it back together, and that's why it took all day?

  7. Apparently, it all just depends on the status of where your petition is sent to. Mine was received in Texas April 12th, approved in the California Service Center on April 23rd. Exactly one month later the embassy in Tokyo received it. She got her medical done in June and will schedule her interview in July. If nothing goes wrong during interview, she'll have her visa in hand only 4 months since we started this whole thing.

The biggest problem has been saving up enough money. We were anticipating 6 - 12 months, including accounting for possible minor complications.

Hopefully you'll hit some luck too! From what I understand, according to the general guidelines of all this, the time it takes the service center to approve your petition once they receive it could average 4 months by itself. Only after that you'd get medical and interview, which may take another several months depending on how busy either are.

  8. So a little update!

NOA2 approval was 04/23/14 and our package left NVC 05/12/14 heading to Tokyo.

My first packet to USCIS was received 04/12/14, so it took one month to reach this stage!

  9. Hi! Have a question regarding the letter from my employer. Working a commission based job my income is not set in stone. However, I have made no less than $33k since my employment 4 years ago. What can I put down as "annual salary"? Only my hourly ($22kish)?, or the hourly plus commission ($33k - $35k)? I am in Hawaii and filing for K-1 with a K-2. 125% for Hawaii is $28k~.

    Appreciate any advice!

tl;dr; letter of employment from Sales job - hourly pay only (will not meet povety reqs), or hourly plus commissions (will meet poverty reqs)?

  10. So, this may seem like a silly question but I am a bit confused. When making the statement certifying that the translation is accurate, I am having trouble for how to word the one for the Koseki.

The statement I have used thus far goes as follows:

I NAME, certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and Japanese languages, and that the attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled TITLE.

The problem is that the Koseki doesn’t actually have a title on it that says “Family Register” on the top in big letters. On the translation, it was typed to just say (Translation of Family Register) but the official document doesn’t actually have a title. So for those of you who have already submitted the IV Packet, how did you word the translation certification sheet for the Koseki?

We kind of went overkill on the translations. Had: family register (extract), Extract of household register, certificate of acceptance of marriage, divorce certificate, divorce report.

Only Japanese document sent over was the koseki touhon lol. Still approved in 11 days.

  11. I sent in the I-129F around 4/4, 4/12 received text/email that the case has been accepted and they're routing it to California for processing, checked status and 4/23 they mailed notice that it has been approved. Finally got home from visiting her in Japan 4/30, checked mail and it said it is now being sent to NVC.

  12. Saw your location as Honolulu and thought I'd drop a comment. It's been a long haul for us, actually waited a year for the K1. We go for our interview next Tuesday in Honolulu. My best advice is to use the Checklists during each step of the process. Try to find others with similar timelines and keep in touch with them. Follow the forum threads. Be patient and try your best to enjoy the journey. I flew to Japan twice while waiting for the visa to be approved, that was fun, although leaving was always difficult. Aloha!

Thanks for the advice man! I told the lady that it would probably be closer to a year or more anyhows. I'm a 'prepare for the worst, hope for the best', kind of guy.

I'm going Japan first Monday of April! We used to go every year when I was younger, but I haven't been there in about 13 years.

Good luck with the interview! Although it appears it's usually a breeze!

  13. Anyone piggybacking a K-2?

Fiancee has full custody of her son as indicated on her kosekitouhon. Is that sufficient? Will also try to get non-custodial parent's consent, but will it be absolutely necessary?

All my searches so far have resulted in topics made for other countries and each answer seems to vary. Looking specificallyf or Japan.

  14. Hey everyone. Lurker here introducing myself.

Have been getting the paperwork ready for first filing of the K-1 (& K-2) for the past month or so, just gathering information. Going to send the I-129F and other necessary documents to fiancee in Japan for signing and then send to USCIS as soon as I get it back.

Easier to send pre-typed documents and have her fill in some blanks and sign than for her print or draft her own somewhere.

    Hope all goes well!
