When you apply for the passport, you have to provide evidence of your citizenship.  In the case of a naturalized citizen, you provide the Naturalization certificate to the passport office along with the application.  It normally takes the passport office a few weeks to process your application and return your naturalization certificate back to you.  But if you do a same-day passport application, they give you back the naturalization certificate the same day that you apply, along with your new passport.

Thank you! This is really helpful. I found additional on travel.gov so I think it will be okay for me to keep the oath ceremony and still able to get the passport for travel in time.

My husband got same-day passport because we had travel already booked.  You can call within 14 days of your booked travel and get an appointment to go into the passport office and they issue your passport the same day.  The other bonus of this method is we got his Naturalization certificate back in hand the same day.

Would you mind to explain what does it mean with "....we got his Naturalization certificate back in hand the same day."?

I thought I can get my Naturalization certificate the same day on my Oath ceremony

  3. Hi all, I am in a dilemma... my N400 was approved in 2023 and finally received the Oath ceremony is scheduled in February. However, I have internation travel plan late March (part business part lesiure).

While I am excited to become a citizen, I believe at the Oath Ceremony, I will need to turn in my green card... which also mean I don't have travel documents and I will not be able to apply for a US passport in time.

What would you recommend?  Is it difficult to get the Oath Ceremony to be rescheduled? Or is there a way I can still travel without US passport even though I will become US citizen.

    TIA!

Is it possible for her to visit a third country (not Mexico or Canada) for a period of time before returning, if she is too afraid to go home right now?

i would be very wary of applying for anything out of the ordinary with VWP, high chance of denial and then she will lose her VWP privileges and find getting a tourist visa probably quite difficult too, and the effects of all that will be with her long after coronavirus is a footnote.

If she goes to Canada, how long do you think she needs to stay before returning to the US without creating any red flag?

  5. Hi all - my mom came to the US to visit me (PR) on ESTA (visa waiver program) from Hong Kong back in December. My mom planned to stay until early March, leave before the allowed time. However, the Coronavirus outbreak feared me to send my mom back home as Hong Kong has many confirmed cases and someone died of it already.

I want to know is there a way she can extend her stay for another month or two until the spread of Coronavirus going down? I think I saw it saw it somewhere on USCIS that visitor came in via ESTA aren't allowed for visa extension (since ESTA not really a visa).

Is there other way I can try to apply something for her, maybe based on humanitarian reason?

    Thank you

  6. Hi - I am applying for N400... however, I am not sure what address should I use. I recently bought a house with my wife (US Citizen) about three months ago. We haven't moved in yet because we are still updating/remodeling the home. We are still living in the same address in the last 5+ years. Should I use the new address or the old one? The two houses are in the same city/State.

    Thanks!

  7. Hello all, I'm February filer, too!

I got a lot of help from this forum and really appreciate everyone's input!!!

I mailed my remove of condition's application on 02/07/2017 with CA service center, delivered on the 9th, and I just received my NOA! Unbelievable!

Wish the rest of the process going to be as smooth as it has begun... Wish everyone the best of luck, too!

  8. Hello all,

I'm currently in a dilemma and I'm not sure what I should do...

I received my 2 years green card this March. I'm not sure if I understand correctly, I think I'm required to have health insurance coverage under the Obama Care (Affordable Health Care Act). I still had insurance until Aug 14 this year because I was still a student at my university. I tried to signed up for health insurance through the market place in Minnesota (called MnSURE) and purchased a policy but was told it will take effect immediately in June at the time I purchase it. I told them I don't need coverage until mid-August (or even just August 1st). They said okay but I never received any confirmation. I later received an invoice for the insurance policy for June, I never pay for it since I never request to have coverage for June and July. Today I received a letter saying that they are cancelling my policy due to non-payment and I maybe subject to penalty based on Obama Care.

    So here's my questions:

    1) Am I required to have health insurance being a green card holder?

    2) If so, is there another way I can purchase a policy not going through the state market place?

    3) Will I really be penalized for being not have have health insurance?

Sorry for the long story but any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

  9. Hello, I had a little car accident yesterday and I do not know what is the proper way to handle it. Here's what happened: I left work last night and found my driver's side door was all smashed and dented, the person who damaged my car left me a note said to call her because she backed into my car. So I called her and she said that I need to call her insurance company to settle things. Her insurance company is 21st Century Auto Insurance... I called and they said they will start a claim process and if their policy holder found at fault, they will repair it for me.

However, I have heard so many terrible stories that insurance company may try to argue with you to try to not take responsibility or even they pay you for repair, they will pay far less than what it will cost to get the car repaired. I am not sure what I should do here. I have not called my own insurance company, should I called my own insurance company?

  10. I think if your spouse had an health insurance plan through work, you are required to accept that first and generally that will be lower cost. The marketplace plans are for those with no other options.

If you lost your insurance from school, you should be able to switch to your wife's plan under special enrollement (for loss of insurance coverage.)

I didn't realize that maybe an option. I will look into it.

    Thanks!

  11. The subsidies don't count as welfare, so don't worry about that.

Open enrolment isn't until November 1st, but there is a probably a life changing event applicable to you (recently married, recent immigrant...).

Bear in mind, if your wife is insured at work and then ditches that plan so you can both be under one policy on the Marketplace, you won't be eligible for subsidies since you had the option of employer coverage. We found that out a month too late and it was a real ####### trying to get that subsidy off our account. We expect we will owe about $300 back to the government.

If it's just you enrolling on a Marketplace plan, you should be fine on the subsidy front if she doesn't make too much.

    Thanks for the detailed info.

I am kind of confuse about the subsidy part, can you give me more clarification about the subsidy part?

My wife has her own health insurance through work. We married last year but I chose not to be added to her plan during open enrollment since I was still a student and mandated to get insurance through the school so why would I pay double health insurance. But now open enrollment for her work place not open until Nov 15.

My plan is just to get insurance for myself. I think I may qualify at least some sort of subsidy due to the household income less than the standard. Do I need to change the plan on Nov 15 either join on my wife's plan or both get on mnsure???

  12. If you are residing in Minnesota then use the state exchange: https://www.mnsure.org/

    Thanks for the info.

My concern using mnsure is that although my wife income is high enough to support me through the AOS, but it may consider low income when getting Obamacare, thus, may qualify some sort of subsidies... the question is will I be consider taking welfare in the U.S.? I don't want to run into any problems when applying applying for removing conditions.

    Thanks again!

  13. Hello,

I married USC last year and approved AOS. We have some questions about filing the taxes together. My wife (USC) is working full time and I am a full time student. We uses H&R Block tax prep online but we are not sure if I can claim any of the credits, for example the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning credit.

I know it's already passes the tax filing time and we had filed extension.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!!!

  14. Hello all,

My interview is scheduled mid-March and on the appointment letter, it listed the documents to bring included the most recent tax return transcript. Do you think I should file the tax return for 2014 now and hope to get a transcript for the interview or I should just get the transcript of 2013/2012/2011 for the interview? Also, is there anything I should bring that anyone have experience is helpful for the interview???

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

  15. Hello VJers,

I am currently on F-1 student visa and am preparing I-130 and AOS application after getting married. I plan to submit the application by the end of July. I also plan to make a trip back home for a short visit (probbably less than 1 month) because my dad is ill.

My understanding is I need to wait until my biometrics is completed before I make the trip. So what should I do when I filling out the !-131?

    1) In Part 2. Application Type - I checked I am "1d. I am applying for an Advance Parole Document to allow me to return to the US after temporary forerign travel." Right?

    2) In Part 3. Processing Information - I don't have a date of intended departure, since I need to wait for biometrics. Should I still put a date on it or leave it blank?

    3) Do I need to fill out Part 7. "Complete Only If applying for Advance Parole."? If so, if I plan to make more than one trip, do I need to state all the detail in the supplemental document for Part 7?

One last random question, for I693 Medical exam, do I need to complete it when I submit my AOS or I should wait until USCIS send me an RFE and then do it? I saw different things so I am not 100% sure what to do.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Have a great day!

  17. Hello,

I am very nervous and I really wish that someone can give me some pointers. Any help is greatly apprecaited!

I entered to the US legally and is currently on F-1 student visa.

I want to file a green card application through marriage. My wife and I have been together for almost 5 years. We just got marry about 2 months ago. We really want to make a step forward in our lives. However, I made a poor judgement when I was in college, which result in a conviction of MN Statute 609.52.2 (3) (i). I had made the restitution, served the community services and paid the fine. Here’s the information about the statue: https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/?id=609.631#stat.609.631 . The maximum possible penalty for this is: - Where the value of the property or services stolen is $500 or less, to imprisonment for not more than 90 days or to payment of a fine of not more than $1,000, or both. Someone told me that it is a petty offense even determined involving moral turpitude. If it is the case, I may not inadmissible to apply green card most likely.

I want to try to file the application by myself. Does anyone know if I will experience a lot of troubles for my green card application?

What should I prepare for the application besides of all the normal stuffs?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you again for your time!
