  1. Just received a letter from NVC in the mail today.

"The National Visa Center (NVC) received your inquiry concerning the immigrant visa petition [Case Number] filed by [Petitioner Name] on behalf of [beneficiary Name]. The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) does not allow derivative status to family members of immediate relatives. IR1, CR1, CR2, IR2, and IR5 classifications are immediate relative visa categories. That means a spouse, unmarried child under the age of 21 and a parent of a U.S. citizen require their own individual petition in order to immigrate to the U.S."

Anyone receive this letter? My guess is it's because our son was listed in the DS-260. He's already a U.S. citizen, so obviously no petition was needed. Either way, I'll call tonight or tomorrow to ask why this letter is sent.

  2. Doesn't your marriage certificate say both your wife's maiden and married names? I'm Japanese and in Japan we cannot even have a last name that is not Japanese. So...I mean a PCC with my husband name? Impossible. I didn't even think about that. Nobody asked anything!

Yes, marriage certificate has both names on it. I believe I read somewhere that PCCs needed to be issued in ALL names used, hence the worrying. Well, we got a case complete with the maiden name only PCC, so everything worked out!

  3. Hey there, I had the same question. What did you mention in the police report application form? ( maiden or married)

Didnt you change the national identity card to married name? Did u speak with the police head quarters?

I know there wont be an issue. Hope the nvc process goes well.

    Please let us know.

Thanks. Sorry for the late response. Just seeing this. My wife never updated her National ID Card. It still shows her maiden name to this day. We asked the police department about the name issue and they instructed us to use the name on the card. I also contacted the U.S. embassy in Colombo and they said there would not be a problem with the PCC being in her maiden name. Luckily, there was no issue! I attached a letter explaining the situation just to be on the safe side. We got a Case Complete yesterday.

You will need a cover letter when you submit everything to the NVC. It can't hurt to include a note in the letter saying the police cert uses the maiden name.

Yes, I attached a letter explaining the situation to be safe. Yesterday we got a Case Complete, so no issues!

Could you pls tell me , did u get the police reports since the age 16 or since the birth.

I am confused as some people here in lanka say I need it since my birth.

We got her PCC with the period since birth. I would contact the NVC and U.S. Embassy in Colombo to ask.

  4. Hello :).

Several people (including Saylin in the wiki) have mentioned that nothing should be left blank in form i-864 and you should type "none" or N/A. However, I found myself trying to do so and some parts of the form look kind of ridiculous lol (see attached thumbnail). Should it really be like that?

Does anyone have screenshots of this form- besides the sample form on the site...A lot of spaces are blank there, so I don't feel like I should follow that sample....

Sorry if it’s a dumb question, but I am scared of getting a checklist :(

Thank you in advance! And special thanks to Saylin…For her hard work reading every post, writing the wiki and updating the spreadsheet :)

I don't know what I would have done without VJ!

Hey, I noticed something you need to fix. Current individual annual income is included on line 10, so that should not be "N/A". The amount from line 5 should be transferred over.

  5. The police clearance certificate is officially delaying our case now. We actually applied back in December and the first certificate came back with a spelling error in the address. We tried to go get it fixed. It's one letter that needs to be changed! They made us re-apply and go through the entire process again! We re-submitted the application in late February and we're still waiting. I'm tempted to send in the first certificate and explain the situation. Wonder if they would allow us to bring the new one to the interview.

  6. Here's our situation. My wife will be receiving her police clearance certificate only showing her maiden name. We filed the USCIS petition using her married name. In Sri Lanka, they will only issue PCCs using the surname on the National Identity Card. Her passport has been updated to married name, but she never changed it on her National ID card. We asked the police department if we could include her married name on the PCC and were told it wasn't possible. I will likely be sending in the IV packet this week and worry they will ask for a PCC showing married name. I spoke with the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka about this and was told it wouldn't be a problem, but I'm not so sure the NVC will be on the same page. Has anyone encountered a similar issue? I'm thinking of submitting an attachment explaining the situation.

  7. Call NVC get case number and IIN, give email addresses - Petitioner and Beneficiary

They will email AOS and IV invoices. Use Case # and Inv# to log in to CEAC

Complete the online DS-261 when available on CEAC

Pay the AOS bill, once it's invoiced and shows up on CEAC

Once the bill appears as PAID, send the AOS package

Pay the IV bill, once it's invoiced and available on CEAC

After the bill appears as PAID, send the IV package

When available complete the online DS-260

Respond to any checklists, if applicable - false checklists are normal

Confirm case complete with NVC over the phone.

    Determine interview date schedule

    Case is forwarded to embassy/consulate

Please take time to read and digest Saylin's NVC guide.

It will answer most of your questions.

They told me the first email could take up to 20 business days. Looks like you got it a little faster!
