I have experienced the same, if there is no GC, the immigration officer asked you to wait in a room to be processed.
I have traveled with a valid I-551 stamp in my passport, most of my travel is to Europe and I find it extremely irritating after a LONG flight and jetlag to be sitting in a room especially when the officers take breaks in between and engaged in a conversation with fellow coworkers neglecting that they have us waiting. This happened both at Miami and Ft. Lauderdale Airtports. I hope those of us waiting will get our GC soon and file for citizenship so we can eliminate the stress of immigration.
I know, right? I traveled non-stop for more than 12 hours then waited in line to go through immigration for 30-45 minutes, excited to get to my house and watch Netflix on our new smart TV and sleep on my own bed only to be told I have to go through secondary inspection.
The CBP officer who interviewed me at secondary was an Asian man with an accent and I was thinking to myself the whole time how come this man has the power to deny me entry to the US when I went to graduate school here with a STEM degree, I speak better English than him, I contribute to America by educating its future scientists and performing scientific research, I’m a legal permanent resident with a valid green card stamp, and the only difference between his citizenship and mine is that I held off filing the paperwork for my US citizenship because I’m waiting for the US government to finish processing my ROC (something beyond my control)??!!

What airport?
When you got the I-551 stamp, didn't they take away the GC from you? Presenting the I-551 stamp plus expired green card may have made you look suspicious to the officer. Presenting the green card was unnecesary as the Passport with stamp is enough by itself.
I have traveled with stamp in and out of LAX with no problems, no secondary inspections, nothing.
I came through SFO international airport.
The next time I travel, hopefully it’s with the 10-year GC or a US passport. I noticed another woman with GC and kids also in secondary.
I was asked questions about my USC spouse. It appeared the CBP officer wanted to know if we still lived together. I was also asked about my work.
Anyhow, it’s my first time ever in secondary inspection and it was unnerving because I couldn’t tell for sure what’s wrong with my travel documents. The USCIS officer told me I was good to travel after he stamped my passport with the I-551 stamp.

I am praying that CSC starts approving our ROCs. I had to undergo secondary inspection as I came through immigration at the airport today. This cost me more than an hour of my time and anxiety and stress wondering why I was brought to secondary, given that my I-551 temporary GC stamp is valid until August 2018.
I could hear immigration officers interviewing people on visitor visas then the visitors being denied or grilled with detailed questions about their travel history. When I asked the CBP officer why I had to undergo secondary inspection, he said it was because my GC has expired and is not a valid travel document. Also, they had to verify my temporary GC stamp and its validity. He also warned me that until I get the 10-year GC, I should expect secondary every time.

Just an update on my InfoPass appointment for the temporary I-551 stamp.
The security guy in charge of doing the xray on the contents of my sling bag took his sweet time and ended up having to scan my bag 3 times. Apparently, he thought the triangular Prada logo on the outside of my bag was a "dangerous weapon". Oh geez.
Anyway, I went up to the check in counter. Gave my appointment letter, original I-751 NOA extension letter, original biometrics letter, and green card. Then he gave me a stub/number.
Once my number showed up on the monitor, I headed to the USCIS agent and he asked for my stub, appointment letter, original I-751 extension letter, original biometrics letter, and green card. He then checked the information on his monitor, GAVE BACK MY GREEN CARD, then asked for my passport. After that, he stamped the temporary I-551 on my passport, wrote his endorsement on it, and then I was free to go. I did notice that the I-551 stamp was valid for a year from today, Aug. 29, 2017 and does not extend the conditional green card for another year (so 2 years from the date of expiry on the GC), unlike the extension letter which extends the GC expiry date for another year.
Anyway, I'm glad he gave me my conditional green card back. He says my GC is now "married" to my I-551 stamp and that I should have no problem with CBP. It seemed to me that I'm supposed to present both the expired conditional GC AND the I-551 stamp to CBP at the immigration counter at the airport?

I have my InfoPass appointment for the green card stamp on the passport this coming week.
I'm bringing the following:
a. valid passport
b. valid state ID
c. InfoPass appointment letter
d. photocopy of ROC notice of action letter
e. photocopy of ROC biometrics appointment letter
Please let me know if I'm missing anything.

Well, the officer did not even ask for it. When I came, I just told her I need an I-551 stamp for employer purposes. Then I gave her my I797 notice. She just stamped my passport after.
So maybe when you go there, just give them your notice, don't mention your GC. The I797 has all the information she needs.
Just for further clarification, you also brought your InfoPass appointment letter, correct?

Did you have to give the original extension letter or just a photocopy?

Yes they took the physical green card and the extension letter we brought with us. They said that the I-551 stamp overrides those others and is the current legal residency evidence.
Damn. I hope they let me keep the conditional GC.

Hi all, we had our InfoPass appointment this afternoon and were able to get the I-551 stamp in my husband's passport. His GC expires 10/29 and we were prepared to be asked about his need to travel and whether it was an emergency but we weren't. The stamp gives one year extension from today, not GC expiration date. Hope that helps!
Did they take the physical green card away after stamping?

Got my InfoPass appointment. The only available schedule that showed up was in 2 weeks so I took it. I tried clicking on earlier dates but nothing happened.
Is it still possible to book an earlier date? How do I change my scheduled InfoPass apointment?
Also, I entered the receipt number on my extension letter when prompted for scheduling. Should I have entered the receipt number on the biometrics letter instead (this is what works for case status check)?

Try looking just after midnight... Appointments are scarce and you need to be flexible from what I've seen. Good luck
I will have to stay up later than usual then. 😕

I'm on InfoPass page. No available appointments for Tue Aug 15 and yet it doesn't let me choose a different day to schedule. What's going on??

I plan to set up an InfoPass appointment for the I-551 stamp. What information is required by
USCIS?

Hi everyone, Greetings to you from a very worried September filer. I didn't know what to do, kind of panicked a bit because my extension will expire on October 28th as that was the day of entry until i googled "September 2016 filers" and it led me here. So, will update my timeline may be later today. And finding this group has provided me with "You are not alone" feeling hehehe. I am glad i found you guys, Yay!!
I said "update timeline" like i know what i'm talking about hahaha..Noob here How do you do that again? sorry
Perhaps you you might want to include your filing date, Notice of Action date and biometrics date.
There is a database/list of that info for Sep 2016 filers. It helps us keep track of approvals and how long that's taking, etc...

The 30 day window to obtain an InfoPass appointment and I-551 stamp opens up for me in 11 days.
Any tips for the InfoPass appointment? I read in other threads that we need to get on the USCIS website right after midnight and try to book an appointment around that time. Is this for real? Also, what should I bring to the USCIS office?

I don't agree we'll start seeing approvals in Nov/Dec. I have a feeling it's starting this month then rolling into Sept. Those processing times on their website, I don't believe they are accurate or indicative of the cases they are "truly" working on.
I hope you're right. From your lips to God's ears. I would apply to naturalize now if I could but I still need to tie up some loose ends. 😕

You need to get an answer from somebody whose passport requires him/her a Canadian visa. Hong Kong passports and Australian passport are all exempt from visa requirement regardless of his/her US permanent residency. However, Indian and the Phillippines passports are only eligible for visa free visit if they have LPR status in the US.
Yes, I was hoping somebody with a similar situation as mine would reply.

To those who have filled out ETA, is there a question on having applied for a Canadian visa in the past?

If you're coming back to the states in August before your letter expires, it should be fine. We recently traveled and my husband had no trouble coming back in with his expired GC and extension letter.
Yes, I will be coming back to the US in August, before my GC/extension letter expires in September.
I'm just curious if there are any special requirements since I will be traveling outside the US and then back so close to the expiration date. I will be traveling with my USC spouse and will go through Canada and US immigration together.

I'm planning to travel to Canada 🇨🇦 in August. My GC/extension letter expires in September. Should I get an Infopass appointment and I-551 stamp or would it still be safe to use the GC/extension letter combination?
-
Has anyone traveled to Mexico on expired green card and extension letter?
-
So to enter 🇨🇦, bring:
1. Passport
2. ETA
3. Expired green card
4. Extension letter
Am I missing anything?

I gotta feeling the end is almost near.... we just might start getting news by the end of this month well into August and this is specifically for those who applied at VSC.
And when would news start filtering in for CSC applicants?

We’re in the same boat. My expired GC was returned to me by the USCIS agent after he stamped my passport with the I-551 stamp. I thought by showing my expired GC and I-551 stamp, it would make the CBP officer’s job easier as it would show my immigration history. I guess I was wrong.
