  1. Sorry - posted in the wrong forum first.

Well....its in the mail and was delivered this morning. How long does it generally take NVC to process the AOS and tell you if it is acceptable? This is the scary one for us. We have lots of assets and no income.

Another question....how did you find out if the I-864 was approved? Do they send a snail mail? I have had no luck gettting an operator at NVC lately. We signed up for e-mail at the CSC process but never did receive one.

The phone message says our DS-230 is generated and will be mailed in the next few weeks (can you imagine). How do you find out about approval there also?

    Thanks,

    Ed

  3. I must be thick to still be asking questions at this stage.

I am compiling all of the documents I need to submit with our I-864 and I-864a in anticipation of receiving them this week (the NVC says they were sent a week or so ago). I have a question and am seeking some reassurance.

    1. Is there a requirement once all of the documents are done to take the entire package to the consulate here and have a US notary notarize our signatures on the form before we sent them on?

    2. We will be solely dependent on assets. Am I correct in assuming plain old photcopies of all documents are sufficient with this submission? I have all of our bank statements, the ownership, mortgage and assessment on the US house, IRA and my RSP statements and stock and mutual fund holdings. I plan on holding on to originals for the interview. Am I doing the right thing?

    3. Has anyone used statements printed from on-line? There are some accounts for which we do not receive statements, some for which we get electronic statements (which we could print)?

    Thanks,

    Ed

  4. Hi,

I have a habit of not exactly hitting the mark even when I try to be helpful but I just wanted to raise this for Aussiewench to address.

We have just received the AOS bill in the mail. (Yippee). My concern is that I was all set to self generate one from the links (shortcuts) that are here. When I checked today the address that my official letter says to send the payment to is different than the one on the downloadable form here on the shortcuts link.

The address on my form and envelope (provided) is

    National Visa Center

    PO Box 790135

    St. Louis, MO 63179-0135

The address on the form in the link is

    National Visa Center

    P.O. Box 952200

    St. Louis, MO 63195-2200

Perhaps this is not a concern but I thought I would mention it.

  5. Hi,

    Thanks cmartyn.

No, she hasn't moved. She is living in Canada with me and has been for three years. That is the issue for me. I cannot use USPS here. I looked on line and think I found an address for several other purposes at

    Department of State

    1005 Convention Plaza

    St. Louis, MO 63101

As I said it was listed for other purposes (multiple times with different box numbers). I will phone the NVC in the morning and see if they can verify for me.

Thanks for the clarification on the DS-3032. It didn't seem to make any sense she would fill one out.

  6. We have a file number from the NVC. In no time we were on the automated phone system and heard they had sent me the DS-3032 and my wife the DS-3032 and the AOS Bill. I got mine last Monday, she still has received nothing. Mine has gone back (I couriered it) and they have indicated receipt (automated phone message).

I think I will go the self generated route for the bar code and AOS bill.

    Couple of questions though.

    1. Does my wife have to fill out a DS-3032 also or is this just sent to her for convenience or information?

2.If she does, can we use a photocopy of my DS-3032 for her to fill in (is it the same)? It came with my name pre-filled in at the top.

    3. Would hers have her name or my name pre-filled in? (Obviously she is not an immigrant applicant so I assume it is mine if the form has to go in at all.)

    4. Does anyone have a mailing address for St. Louis for the IV bill? From Canada, I would prefer to courier this out to cut time (I have lost a week already). Courier will not accept a post office box from Canada.

Sorry about the questions but what the hey, you can't shoot me for asking.

    Thanks,

    Ed

  7. Cool. Thanks.

I think we are also helped by my wife being a nurse and hence employable at the drop of a hat.

I phoned NVC today and talked to a wonderful woman who said that there is little or nothing to worry about. She said the officer would understand that there cannot be income due to our situation and with plenty of assets not to worry. She was marvellous. Made me feel much more at ease.

Yesterday I got my DS-3032 but my wife did not get hers or the bill. Crazy since they were mailed at the same time.

  8. Hi,

If there is one thing that concerns me about our application in general it is the I-864. We have no US income to count so it will be judged purely on assets. Frankly we have enough to meet the 5 year test with room to spare.

My concern is the lack of any US income to point to and the concern that the officer will be worried we are going to become welfare cases.

The Dept of State website states this clearly:

Can the immigrant visa applicant count assets that he or she owns that are outside the United States, such as real estate or personal property?

    Yes, under these conditions:

The assets must be readily convertible to cash within 12 months

The applicant must show that he/she can take the money or assets out of the country where they are located. Many countries have strict regulations which limit the amount of cash or liquid assets that can be taken out of the country

The assets equal at least five times the difference between the sponsor's income and 125 percent of the poverty line for the household size.

But the tips here on visajourney point to the need for income not assets:

When assets are used, the assets must equal 5 times the difference between the annual income and the

needed 125% of the poverty level, this is because the affidavit is in effect for 5 years. For instance, if you

needed $15,500 income and had an annual income of $13,500, you would need an extra $2,000 of assets for 5 years, or a total of $10,000 in assets in addition to your income. In general, if you are deficient on yearly income for sponsorship and your assets are somewhat borderline, do not take chances--have a co-sponsor. If you do not have a job or a steady income from other sources (such as retirement income), you will likely have to get a co-sponsor for your spouse, even if your assets are adequate. The USCIS looks VERY CLOSELY at current income and not just the assets.

So, the question is whether we should hedge our bets by having a co-sponsor submit with us just in case.

Sorry for being a pain on this one but I don't want to get slowed down.

    Thanks,

    Ed

  9. Quick dumb one.

In this question I of course named my spouse (who is the US citizen). She is living in Canada with me now and has been for 3 years. Do I indicate that she will be accompanying me? In fact I am accompanying her.

My inclination is to answer as below indicating her status as a USC and my sponsor:

Spouse - (put her name) - US citizen and my sponsor

    What do you think?
