  1. Good Sunday everyone,

I would love your help for a friend that has a question about continuous residency requirement after applying for American citizenship.

She applied for citizenship in October 2020 and then had to go back to Italy for a few months.

She returned to the States few weeks ago but will have to go back to Italy in a month or so to take care of her baby (the father lives in Italy).

She knows the “general rule” that requires to spend in America at least 6 months and a day every year; however, she is not sure if this requirement applies in exactly the same way also after applying for citizenship.

Would you please share your knowledges on this regard?

She is very confused right now and your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you so much

  2. Hi guys,

I have a question that may seem rhetoric but am a little confused about the meaning of the “Estimated wait time” that am seeing on my online application.

I filed it exactly one year ago and today I noticed that in the space “estimated wait time” it says “2 days”. However, in the “Estimated case completion time” I still see “June 2019”.

Do you know what’s the difference between the 2?

Should I expect an interview in 2 days and the completion of the case in June 2019?

If so, how do I get notified for sure about date and time of interview?

Thank you in advance for your answer/help!

  3. Hi everyone, I was wondering whether or not I am able to travel outside the States while my application is still pending.

More precisely, I applied at the end of April 2018, did biometrics mid of May and now waiting for the next step.

I was thinking about a 3 weeks trip to Italy in September and my concern would be if they schedule the interview during that timeframe.

Other than the above mentioned possibility, do you think I would face any other risks?

Thanks a lot in advance for your contribution!

  4. Hey Nikkosan, nice seeing you here as well! I clicked on that link but it redirects me to a page where most of the info requested don’t even apply to my situation. I am probably going to the wrong page..

Anyways, I submitted the application online and already received the NOA (that I believe is the same of the “priority date”) - 04.25.18.

Also, they scheduled an appointment for taking fingerprints but - although the notice of action is dated 04.28.18 - I can’t see the letter uploaded on their website yet.

Do do you guys think it’s normal?

  5. Thanks Life_love for your contribution.

You are right, apparently I was required to upload them (tax returns) since I am lacking a 5 years continuos residency (I had a trip of 8 months at the beginning of my permanent residency).

I uploaded the tax transcripts as well (since I read they are “more effective”) so like you said I should be fine document-wise and I always have the chance to explain the gap of 8 months at time of interview.

    Wish me luck!

  6. Hello guys,

I have just submitted my application online and have a question about the required tax documents.

As you know, when it comes to upload them, it is specifically asked to upload “tax returns for the last 5 years” and so I did.

However, I also came across a thread where it was suggested to use the tax transcripts instead as this would avoid the need of uploading other supporting documents like the w2.

Now, what I did was uploading the tax returns where I was asked to and then - after paying and submitting the application (since I read that thread only later) - I also uploaded the tax transcripts in the part dedicated to RoE (“other documents”).

Do you guys think I did it right?

  7. Thank you all guys for your contribution to this thread.

Yesterday I started filling the application online but I had a very short time available as I am using my computer/scanner at work and had to leave at some point.

I was able to scan green card, certificate of marriage (in case I will need it, although my permanent residency is not based on US citizen marriage) and entry all the addresses where I lived in the last 5 years.

At this point I have a question: is it of crucial importance to entry the exact day I moved to that specific address and then when I moved out?

In the last 5 years I changed 5 addresses and I found very difficult to remember (even using email to help me out) the exact day.

I was able to identify the week in which I moved in/out but not the day and I don’t think I’ll find the tenancy agreement for all of those addresses.

Do you think that may constitute a problem?

    Thanks a lot in advance!

  8. Hello guys, I am resuming this thread as I would like to know whether it is available or not a list of items that will be required during the application process online.

I am aware that each case is different and the list will vary according to the specific status but I guess there must be items that will be asked no matter what the personal situation is.

I am planning on starting the application in a few hours and would like to come prepared in order to avoid the possibility of getting stuck at the beginning of the application.

Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

  9. Thank you guys for reporting your direct experiences.

Rusty 72, I would like to ask you few questions:

    1) can you pay by using credit card at time of filling out the application online?

    2) you said that you also sent by mail other documents? Couldn’t you keep submitting them online like you did for some of them?

    3) more in general, what do you suggest me to keep handy when I will start the process online?

i just don’t want to get to the point where I am asked something that it is not in my possession at that time (although I guess one can save the application whenever and then resume it later, correct?).

    Thanks a lot!!

I filed march 5 ..my interview is scheduled for mid may.

Online was much easier it sorta guides you through it and it tells you what evidence you need so no guessing.

    It was easy and painless

Wow! So you are basically confirming that online is extremely faster. I don’t understand why some people still submit all the forms offline, knowing they will wait almost one year then...

  11. Thank you guys for your contribution, really appreciated.

I guess I will try my luck and see what happens. I am aware I risk to lose the significant fee but at this point it is a risk I am willing to take because if everything goes fine, I would save about one year of wait.

At what time of the process you think a problem may arise? At the beginning of the application, at time of interview or in between?

Would the hypothetical denial affect in any way the next application I will submit one year later?

    Thanks a lot again!
