@mindthegap@Lincarol107@hemkank@cndrbk@TingX, may I know which service center you went to to do your biometrics walk-in? Roughly what time do you walk in: early in the day, lunch time, or before closing time?
I had a bad experience walking in at the LIC service center in the past, so I'm also wondering if I can do my walk-in at any other service centers in the city. -
I just saw online that they have scheduled my biometrics appointment. I saw from other posters that they showed up earlier than the scheduled date... do I need to bring anything for the walk-in appointment? Which office did you go to, if that's the case?

Impressed with this online filing system so far.
Which office did you do the walk-in at for your biometrics, @mindthegap? I did my AOS biometrics in LIC and had an unpleasant experience with the officer there when I tried to do a walk-in (I forgot the appointment that was previously assigned to me).
I just filed my N-400 form online a few days ago and saw an estimated completion date of 13 months from now. :/

They apologized, and explained that they had to do this to verify the paperwork. It didn't bother me at all, just wanted to go home after an 11 hour flight.Yeah same here lol. All I wanted was to get home after a long flight.

Definitely need to know your rights for sure! I finally submitted my naturalization application today, hopefully I won't have to deal with this in the future!

I just wanted to share my experience on this. I didn't want to bring a flimsy paper with me while I was traveling abroad, so I made sure to get an I-551 stamp on my passport to show to the CBP agents. I was at JFK and was pulled aside into an office as they wanted to verify my stamp to make sure it's legit (?). I ended up waiting for maybe 20 minutes, and there wasn't much exchange of words other than basic questions of where I was traveling from.
I thought getting the stamp would avoid such an experience, but I guess I was wrong. At least my 10-year GC finally arrived while I was away.

No issues getting into the building and through security, but when you get to the 3rd floor the moron by the door won't let you through to the receptionist without an appointment.
Even if you do manage to get past him (I have a few times by using old appointment letters flashed quickly, and also good old distraction!), you will likely find that the the receptionist dragon won't let you see anyone.
She has a couple of times sent me down to the first floor to ask, who promptly sent me back to the third floor to be rejected yet again. No amount of politely stressing the urgency to the point of being in tears on several occasions has gained any differing result.
Always the same staff on the third floor, and all totally unhelpfully rude in there in my honest opinion.
There are self service kiosks on the first floor, but they usually only show the same availability - or lack of it- as you get online, so not much use to anyone.
Holtsville on Long Island can be good for walk ins, but possibly the single rudest customer facing person I have ever experienced (anywhere - not just USCIS) mans the infopass desk there...and he was extremely unhelpful as well, so may be a wasted trip to the middle of nowhere.
Persevere online and you should be good.
Thanks for sharing your experience, mindthegap! That's what I feared. I've had an unpleasant experience at the Queens USCIS office. I may end up going to the Holtsville office with an appointment if I still can't get an appointment at Federal Plaza in the next few weeks.

Regular appointments usually DO appear every night (except friday and saturday) as they are supposed to - unless the system is borked which happens from time to time.
Start checking from 10pm onwards. I have occasionally seen them appear as early as 9pm, and at random times like midday and 5am. No rhyme nor reason to it, it is what it is.

I live in NYC where I presume Infopass appointments are taken quickly. I've gotten the "Currently, there are no available appointments. Please check again tomorrow." everytime I checked at 12.01am, as some people have suggested. No slots seem to be released.
I've also checked sporadically throughout the day but still don't see an appointment available. When are time slots released? Does anyone have any first-hand experience gotten an Infopass appointment in NYC?
I need to get an I-551 stamp on my passport.

I entered the US on a K1 visa. We got married in NYC on July 2014.
My conditional green card is expiring in May 2017, so I just mailed my I-751 application today to renew my green card. However, I also just realized that we're also nearing our 3-year anniversary in July 2017! Which means that I can start to apply for naturalization in April 2017 (in 2 months).
While my I-751 application is still being processed (I heard it can take over a year, esp for Vermont service center), can I apply for N-400, especially when I didn't get a NOA or biometric screening for my I-751 just yet? Been reading mixed thoughts online about this.

I just wanted to update that I had my tax transcripts printed at the nearest Taxpayer Assistance Center at the IRS quickly and painlessly yesterday. Making an appointment in advance is highly recommended.

I used HR Block returns for my I-751 because I had no idea what IRS transcripts were when I dealt with it. My application went through fine without RFE but if you have time try to get those IRS transcripts to be on the safer side. Looks like you'll be filing to Vermont Service Center since your signature shows you're from NYC. In case you haven't noticed, they are crazy slow processing I751s, currently over 12-13 months. Last thing you want is an RFE just because of the tax transcripts. Vermont is also slow processing RFEs. So try to get those transcripts when you have time. Good luck!

I did hear that the processing time for I-751 is insanely slow, actually from a CBP officer at JFK recently, which was why I also want this to be done soon and avoid RFEs. :/

Hey everyone,
It's now officially 90 days before my green card expires, and I've started compiling evidence in the last two weeks.
We recently moved to a new address a few months ago, and discovered that we can't request an IRS tax transcript online or by phone because of it. Instead, we had to mail in Form 4506-T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return) to request our tax return transcript. I just read however, that the IRS can take up to 30 calendar days to mail us our tax transcript.
My question: would it be ok if I were to just print out the Form 1040s that I e-filed with the IRS, instead of having to wait an indeterminate amount of time to receive our tax transcript? Having to wait makes me a little nervous, especially since we have less than 90 days to file. (I'd also like to file asap!)

My I-94 happens to have expired last October as well -- would that be relevant in my case if I already have my green card?
I'm planning a trip back to my home country for a friend's wedding as well as to see friends and family again. Is there a danger of being barred from re-entry at the airport? I've heard a horror story from an immigration attorney that border officers sometimes make up rules as they like -- he had a case where someone left for just a few days and was not allowed to re-enter.

Won't these teenagers be driving their parents' car? I don't know how it's like in the US, but I was provided a car during the test in Malaysia.
From NY's DMV page, it seems like I'd need to bring a car to the road test?:

I live in NYC. Public transportation is pretty convenient here, so my spouse and I haven't found a need to own a car (he sold his a few years ago).
I already have a state ID and have an EAD while waiting for the conditional green card. I'm thinking of getting a driver's license because of a recent incident: when we went to a different state on vacation, I forgot to bring my driver's license from my home country (I left it in NYC), and it was a bit of a hassle as I've rented the car under my name.
I figure it would be easier to get an actual driver's license here in the US. I think I can pass the written test with no problems, but I'm just wondering how to go about doing the road test if I don't have a car? Can we just rent a car from a company and use it during the road test?

My husband came on a IR-1 visa which of course is different from yours. I can only answer your question about school. My husband didn't need to show his college a certificate that he had graduated from high school. He signed an affidavit given to him by the college saying that he had. He is almost finished with a 5 month course at the college for truck driving. So far the truck driving companies trying to hire him are satisfied with the certificate he will get from the college. Call the admissions office of the school you want to go to and ask lots of questions. My husband got here in Feburary 2014 and qualified for financial aid both free money and student loans to pay for school.

Your husband didn't have to take English as a Second Language course did he? My husband and I speak English at home most of the time and I know for a fact he'd understand the professors, but I'm hoping that could also be sorted out with some sort of affidavit.
I'm the applicant, and no I didn't take English as a Second Language as my command of English is pretty good. Hopefully things work out for your husband!
Email or call the community college's admissions department. Each educational establishment will have their own admissions requirements regarding what they will/won't accept for their courses.
If it's a decent-sized establishment, they'll have a central registry division that will have access to the relevant databases to check the equivalencies for international qualifications.
Suggest that you contact the college that you are interested in attending and inquire about their admission requirements.

I moved to the US a few months ago on my K1 visa, and I'm currently in the process of adjusting my status. I already received my EAD too.
Just wondering, can I apply for a continuing education course? I've seen the community colleges asking for a high school diploma or GED, both of which I don't have. I have a high school graduation certificate from my home country but it's not in English.
Not sure if anyone else has experience in this matter?

But quick question. I just received my EAD card today. Assuming that my name is the following:
First name: Michael
Middle name: Peter Tom
I have two words in my middle name that I used in the EAD and GC application. But in the 'given name' section of the card, it's only appearing as 'Michael P', with my middle name abbreviated into a letter (instead of being spelled out in full or abbreviated into two letters, ie: PT instead of just P). I'm not familiar with the US naming conventions, but is this 'correct'?
The reason I'm asking is because I need to go back to SSA to correct my first name and middle name that's appearing on the SSN, as per the topic that I linked to.
