  1. Hi folks, I need some advice about marriage once the fiance' arrives into the US. I have a speed bump in the road that I didn't learn about until today.

My fiance is from the Philippines and she is Catholic. I am Christian and grew up in a baptist church but consider myself as non denominational Christian now. I gave my fiance the choice to get married where ever she wanted, (Catholic church, non denominational, Vegas style chapel, where ever)

My fiance wants to get married in the Catholic church and I said Sure no problem. Here's the speed bump... I called the Catholic church we have attended 2 times since she has been here in the US with me to find out what we need to do about reserving a date.

I learned from the Sister that my fiance first has to register with the church and then go through some sort of preparation course BUT the earliest we could be married is 6 months because of the prep course \ things we have to abide by under the Catholic rules.

She said that as far as she knows ALL Catholic churches have those same rules and 6 months is the quickest we could be married unless we are military, which we arent.

Now everyone here knows we have to get married within 3 months so I am guessing there's NO way my fiance will be able to get married in the Catholic church right?

The sister said we could do a civil wedding and then be married 6 or 8 months later in the Catholic church but is a Civil wedding good enough for Immigration and then later we can do the Cathoic ceremony in the church?

    Thanks for the advice. :D

  2. Hi all, my fiance' has her interview this morning at 10am  She is staying at the Days Inn downtown Vancouver and she can leave her luggage at the front desk we know. I also know she needs to leave her cell phone, keys etc at the front desk of the hotel but she was asking can she take her purse into the consulate or does she need to leave it at the front desk hotel also?

Thanks a bunch for the info from any Vancouver K-1'ers.

  3. My fiance's Iview is on July 10th. I called the airline and asked if my fiance' can get on an earlier flight if there are seats open and they said yes she can for $10.70. Thus, I'll book my fiance' for the 9pm flight and if she gets done early at the Embassy, and arrives at the airport by 4pm, then she can request to fly out on the 5pm flight or the 6pm flight if seats are open... if not she will have her 9pm flight that she can always catch.

  4. Hi, can someone refresh my memory about when \ how we can request my fiance's interview date once she faxes her checklist in? They will email me or my fiance' in about 3 days after the checklist is sent in and her or myself emails them back requesting the date? Or do we fax the request in at the same time she sends her checklist in? I saw it before from other VJ'ers but I can't remember for sure.

Also... what's a recommended hotel close to the US Embassy in Vancouver she can stay at when attending the interview?

    Thanks for the info.

  5. Hello, I have looked online in the Canada 411 pages for "Public Health Units" in Edmonton. My fiance' had her medical last week and she needs to get 1 shot to complete it and pick up her file.

I have called the Dr.'s office a couple times today to get info but I forgot to ask what the closest Public Health Unit was to them when the secretary told me what my fiance' needed to do. I feel like Im bugging them if I call a 3rd time today. Does anyone know the location or phone numbers of some of the Public Health Clinics in Edmonton?

I will be able to locate the closest one for my fiance' if I can get the street address or phone numbers. Just as an FYI, my fiance' had her medical exam at Dr. H.S. Chana's, if that helps any, and \ or she's not that far from Downtown Edmonton.

I appreciate any help you can provide.

    Thanks!

  6. This doesn't pertain to Calgary or Vancouver but thought I'd mention it for any Edmonton medical people.

My fiance' has her medical Monday. She is going to Dr. HS Chana and they require 3 passport style photos, case #, passport, any immunization records, birth certificate, $220 CAN (cash, certified check or MO).

Btw my fiance' has no immunization records. Her records were lost in the Philippines so they will have to test her to make sure she has the necessary vacinations. Originally we thought we had to pay for the test & shots needed but I called back yesterday to get an estimate of how much extra $ she needed to take and this time the lady asked if she had Alberta health care and I said "yes". The receptionist said the test & vaccines would be covered under her health care plan and it would be just the regular fee of $220 for the exam, so that was good news. Im having her take a little extra just in case though.

Hope this helps anyone in the Edmonton area.

  7. Hi thanks for all the replies! My fiance' is set to go on Monday for her medical and her police report. She actually does not need the police report right now but may need it by the time her interview comes up so we will be getting one.

I did call RCMP and the lady said it was a $30 fee. My fiance' also needs NBI Clearance from the PHIL, which Patiently Waiting informed me of earlier in the post, thanks. My fiance' will fax the DS-230 back on Monday also so the only hold up is the NBIC she needs from the PHIL. Her family is going to call the NBI station in her home town and see what the quickest way to obtain it is.

  8. Well I thought I had sent all the forms to my fiance' that she needed from me for when packet 3 arrived but there is one inside the packet that I have not heard of or knew nothing about. She said it is form: OF-167 Attachment.

I have looked for this form on the U.S. Dept of States site to see if I can print it off but have had no luck finding it. The closest form I see is an OF-126 and it's not close at all.lol

Anyone have a link where I can obtain this so I can fill it out and send up to her right away instead of having to wait for the mail?

Maybe the form has to come from the US Consulate & it can't be printed from online?

Anyone else received this form in packet 3? Is it something that pertains to military only or a special circumstance form?

My fiance' said it's different than the Affidavit of support that I had sent her and as I understood it this was the only form needed for the "financial support declaration\commitment"?

    Thanks for the help!

  9. Excellent! Thank you very much for all the replies! We have everything lined up for packet 3 but can't do anything until her new work permit arrives, which is expected about Apr,1,2,3 ish. I say we can't do anything, more accurately... Vancouver won't do anything until we have it in hand.

    Check out my timeline...

If you include your email address with your checklist when you fax it in... you may get a response quicker out of them on an interview date.

We had requested march 23rd... we got April 10th, just to give you an idea.

But definitely schedule your medical whenever you can... it can be a wait sometimes.

  10. Hi, I am wondering how long did it take for the Vancouver US Consulate to mail out the packet of info the fiancee (on a K-1 Visa) has to fill out & mail back in like the Ds-230, 156 etc, once Vancouver receives the file from the NVC?

    Can I expect 2 or 3 days, 1,2,3 weeks?

Second question... once they mail the packet out and she sends all documents back how long did it take for them to inform your fiancee of when her scheduled interview will take place?

We will request the interview date, "first available" but from reading other posts I know this could be from 1 month to 4 months before she gets the interview itself. Is this accurate?

I already posted on BritExpats but no response, i think this board gets much more traffic.

    Thanks for the info!

  11. Hi all. This pertains to obtaining my fiancee's K-1. I need to know if there is a way to speed up the process to obtain a work permit for an immigrant on a work visa in Canada? We are told it takes 68 days, that sucks.

Breif background... my fiancee has\had a valid work permit when she moved to Canada in Jan, however she changed jobs about 3 weeks after arriving. She had to turn in her 1st permit when she applied for the 2nd work permit but they say it takes 68 days.

Ok, Vancouver won't accept the case from Manila until they see a copy of her valid work permit for CAN. See our problem? It's going to tack on about a 4 month delay when we could have been close to getting her the k-1 visa from the consulate if it werent for a copy of the work permit.

Can I pay an agency for rapid processing? Is the avg time to get a work permit really 68 days? Anything we can do at all to speed it up?

    Thanks for the advice.

Nope... she'll have to go through the labor certification all over again... I'm afraid that there's nothing to be able to speed it up...

If you want more information, you could post this question to the Canadian Immigration forum on British Expats.

    www.britishexpats.com

Thanks Zyggy. That's kinda what I knew already but hoped there was some faster way. What if I could obtain a copy of the 1st work permit & send it in and not mention she is in the process of chaning jobs? The consulate just wants to see a valid work permit to accept the file. I don't know that they will call the labor board and the copy will suffice? They are just concerned that she's in the country on a valid work permit right?

  13. Hi Brunette. Why did they say you can't keep your Canadian bank account that you will continue to fund from your US bank that you setup here and for them to continue to draft their payments from the CAN acct?

It's not a matter of whether they will get the money or not... it's a matter of what they can do if you don't pay. Esentially if you take it out of the country, they won't be able to enforce their promissory note against you if you don't pay be repossessing the car.

Ahhh yes. In that case your best options are sell it and buy a car in the US or refinance with a US bank\institution and pay off the loan in CAN.

  14. Thank you so much for the information. As soon as my Fiancee moves and we get our case number I will make sure to call the center's 1 800 number. Again, thank you.

Hey Himaya Ko. Your service center will want you to fax a letter into them stating your fiancee's address change but you better stay on top of them and follow up until you can confirm it is done.

I faxed over the request 3 weeks before our I-129F went to the NVC and it did not get changed. I then faxed NVC 2 requests while it was there and it still did not get changed.

However, NVC did step up to the plate as they did file a request to the Embassy in Manila for me for it to be moved to my fiancee's US Embassy in Vancouver where she lives now. If the CSC or NVC would have been able to change it before it left the NVC it would have saved an additional 2 to 3 weeks delay for the trip it took to Manila and back to Vancouver instead of from New Hampshire to Vancouver.

The notices will be mailed to you at your address and not your fiancee's so until you get your NOA2 her address isn't really a big deal.

Just make sure to start working on your Service Center as soon as you get a WAC # (that's when they will be able to identify your case, in other words your NOA1) for them to change her address and follow up with them twice a week until they can verify it has been changed.
