If the name change is marriage based,  which is changing the last name to your spouse, the marriage certificate will be sufficient and USCIS will be able to change the name on your naturalization paper.

Otherwise you will have to file a name change on court. It's the best that you file the name change before filing N400 so you can use your new name in the form with the court order. If you've already filed N400, it depends on the processing times of your N400 and your name change in the court. If the court order comes before your interview, you could still bring the court order and ask for a name change on your naturalization paper. If the court order comes after your interview and oath ceremony, you can either choose to keep the naturalization certificate with your previous name and the court order as a proof of name change or pay $555 to file N565 for replacement of a naturalization paper with your new name on. The latter should be optional as court order is valid proof of your name change.

Thank you for reply. Its to change the middle name. Guess we have no choice but to do legal name change through court after the naturalization is completed. We submitted N400 a week ago and biometrics is in 2 weeks. We don't really want to mess with updating the green card with I90 while waiting and might delay the process. And we figure if the citizenship certificate doesn't reflect the new legal name, the court order should suffice going forward.

  2. Yes. We have submitted the N400 with name change request. But we searched the forum and some people said North Cali don't do judicial ceremonies anymore. We just want to confirm if it is true. And if any other Cali offices do judicial ceremonies. We can't find information from official website.

And if North Cali don't hold judicial ceremonies, is it better to submit legal name change through court before naturalization oath ceremony or after.

  3. We want to have a legal name change but we live in Northern California. We remember reading somewhere saying there's no more judicial ceremonies in SF or Sacramento area? Is that mean we are out of luck? Which offices hold judicial ceremonies in California now?

And if we absolutely have to should we do legal name change before oath ceremony or after since we already submitted application.

Thank you for any info and help.

If you filed electronically you can download your transcripts a week after your return is accepted from the IRS. If you filed via the Mail it takes 3 weeks from when you filed for them to be downloadable. Just search for tax transcript download from the IRS website, and it is really easy to do, then you can print it out right now, and file right away for your N400. If you filed mid April, your transcripts are available now for sure. Below is the link....

    https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

Thank you for your reply. Our return was accepted on Apr 17 but the transcript is not ready yet.

  5. We are eligible to file our N400 right now <90 days to 3 year anniversary (3 year rule with same US spouse)

    1. We don't have the 2017 tax transcript on hand right now since we filed mid April. We know tax transcript is preferred so we hope to have it by June the latest and bring it to the interview. Will we get RFE if we do not submit all 3 tax transcripts online? We believe TurboTax pdf tax return has a time stamp when the return was submitted online. Is that sufficient? And if God forbid we don't have it by the interview (like being audited .. highly unlikely ours was straight forward) and we provide only the tax returns at the interview. Will it be a problem at the interview then? Delay citizenship?

    2. We also want to put in a legal name and family name change. Like the name be changed from "Jane Mary Smith" to "Mary Jane Doe" (husband's name). Is it better to include new family name in the N400 or just use marriage certificate after the legal name change? So the application ask to legally change from "Jane Mary Smith" to "Mary Jane Smith"? Which one is prefer but ultimately end with Mary Jane Doe.

We would like to file asap since the process takes 6+ months these days. Thank you in advance!

  6. Traveled with our cat abroad to a few countries..harness is a great idea..if they want to take the cat out of the carrier..ask for a private room...as they can take you and the cat to a private room.....then take the carrier through the X-ray machine! sometimes they wont do that...and that is where the harness/leash come in handy! Some cats are very mellow on flights.....on others, not so much! Many airlines will NOT allow a drugged animal on the flight. And yes many times the airlines wont even check on the cat/dog that is going in the cabin....but some agents do! Highly recommend one has disposable pads over top of the liner in case they do have an accident.....and have wipes to clean up the cat in case they do have an accident....Our cat made quite the mess on 1 trip.....the disposable pad and wipes were a life saver (extras in my wife's carry on back-pack!!) Would never send my cat Cargo....bad enough our 2 dogs have to go down below!!

I wouldn't drug your cat but natural calming agents like Chamomile for example can help.

Thank you very much. Calming agents sounds much better. I hope my kitty will be okay. He gets very nervous. His heart beats so fast whenever at the vet that his vet thought it was a murmur when we first brought him there.

Does anyone has any good and extra light airline approved cat carrier suggestion?

  7. Thank you for all the replies and tips. I will get the harness!

I will have to fly him in cabin stow under the seat. I dont even think it is even possible to ship in cargo since Canada can be -20c sometimes. My kitty is not big or tall, so it should be close to 10lbs with carrier. The only reason why I didn't bring him when I first POE because I had too many luggage and my 2 year old with me.

Has anyone tried to sedate or medication to calm the cat down after inspection? My flight is 6 hours long and it might be better if he's drowsy and sleepy for the most part.

I didn't travel with my cat during the winter, but I did it over Labor Day weekend. She is 14lbs and NOT a happy traveler.

The only thing I did have to do, was take her out and carry her through the security screening. I had nothing extra during the POE part, just the standard screening. I would suggest, even though it sounds obvious, to put a collar and leash on your cat. Security at that airport is ridiculous and there are so many people. I figured I was going to be that girl on the news with the cat who got loose at Pearson. Luckily, that didn't happen.

    Good luck!

How long was the inspection? Did they poke and prod? I know US dont require rabies shot so do I need to bring any health records?

  8. Hi I am hoping to find someone traveled with a cat through YYZ to US during winter months to share the experience. I POE'd a few months before and I want to pick up my kitty from Canada in up coming months. He's been with my family for the last few months.

Does anyone know what happens at US custom at YYZ since this is not first POE, will the process be different? My kitty is over 10 years old so I want to be well prepared before we embark on our trip home.

Thank you and happy early thanksgiving to those celebrating in US!

  9. I applied EI on Aug 10 and received the questionnaire by mail to my US address to provide more documents which I did on Aug 19. Do you know how long it would take for them to process the EI claim?

  10. Congrats!!! Welcome to great weather;)

Oh and by the way - Cali recently changed how they do things with drivers' licenses (literally in June). They will give you a chit of paper instead of the temporary license that says "learner's permit" on it, but I was told by the DMV folks to ignore it as they haven't gotten around to changing things yet. I guess granting temporary licenses was too much trouble. So they want you to drive on your Canadian license with the proof of having applied for a driving test (that piece of paper) until you do your driving test. Then they will issue you a temporary California license until you get your card.

Thank you!! It's so hot lol The temperature difference is like greater than Toronto. It's 65F then 95F. We are still trying to get everything set up in the apartment. Furniture and stuff!! :) But very glad to be home at last.

And thank you for letting me know. We haven't gotten around to DMV yet. We will do so later this week. How long does it take to do the road test? Did you get yours done yet?

  11. and next, right eki? ;)

okay my friends...instead of being outside in the sun and fresh air, i've decided its better to stress.

just getting all my stuff ready for my journey to Quebec.

    1) is anyone bringing the original I 130 package just in case???....I'm looking at the size of it and debating if its necessary...

    2) other than registering for courier services (Loomis) and bringing all documents including the interview letter (P4), am I good to go? or is there something I'm forgetting?

Sorry, I am so brain dead.

On top of all of this and worrying stupid about my lease which is up in Dec 2015, its contents, my 3 very young adult kids who will need to rely more on their father and quitting my job (and maybe my 28 year career) soon.....I am being performance reviewed!!!! Yes, its easiest if I just let the cat out of the bag and pass it off but one never knows if I will need this for future reference or not (gosh, i hope i don't) so, because of this, I'm pursuing it and having it done this week!!!!

    For us:

At the door, the person asked to see my passport and my loomis confirmation! They didnt ask to see my P4.

Once inside, they only asked to see passport, original of birth certificate, marriage certificate, I864s, police certificate. The person didn't ask for copies either. I didn't bring our I130 package but I bought like ticket stubs and trip/hotel receipts after I130 submission. I took the train and I left right after work so I didnt want to drag more paper than I needed too XDD

  12. This was so thoughtful and kind of you. My visa was approved!!! I went super early and got C1 (things have slightly changed in the embassy; you now get your number outside the building). I wish you all the best

Good luck tomorrow eki!! May the approval process go smoothly (which it will). I will be looking out for your good news;)

Congrats!!!! Now we all plan our big move :dancing::dancing::dancing::dancing::dancing: CEAC status .. issued?
