  1. Congrats! Is it for removing conditions from your current green card?
  2. Thank you so much for your response! I will hope for the best. Just to clarify, it's ok to just print out PDF tax returns from software like TaxSlayer, etc? Do they serve as "tax return transcripts"?
  3. Oh, ok. How long? I'm trying to also move out of the country in August or September, so I wonder if I should wait on changing my name then.. Also, my account has been saying estimated time is 7 months, but it said that in the beginning of January.. should I still expect the process to finish by the end of July? The interview is in May.. I filed for tax each year but just don't see tax return transcripts available directly from IRS. Is it ok to just print copy from Tax Slayer, etc? I thought I had to get something official for the past 5 years (and it is not the first 5 years of my residency, is it?).
  4. Also, what type of transcripts should I get? I just went to IRS transcript website, and for immigration purpose, the page recommended I get tax return transcript instead of other types, but then it only has tax years 2020, 2021, and 2022 available. That's only three.. but tax account transcripts seem to have more than 3. Is this alright for naturalization?
  5. Thank you for your reply, Olduser! What about the name change? If I'm still legally married at the time of the interview or at the oath, can I still go ahead and change my name back to my maiden name with USCIS?
  6. Hi everyone, I have a couple questions. I've applied for naturalization and I'm going to have an interview soon. Everything seems to be going well so far, but my marriage is not. I've been married for 12 years and I've been living in the U.S. for almost 14 years, so I'm not worried about getting naturalized per se, but I was wondering, can I still request a name change? Even if we do decide to get a divorce, I'm not sure if it will be final and a divorce certificate will be ready before the interview or the oath (does oath come at a different time after the interview?), but I remember hearing that name change is very flexible at naturalization, so I'm curious.. And even though I applied for naturalization under the category of 5 years or more residency in the U.S., the letter about the interview lists only two options regarding what to bring after the general list of things to bring: "If applying for NATURALIZATION AS THE SPOUSE of a United States Citizen; your marriage certificate, proof of death or divorce for each prior marriage of yourself or spouse, your spouse's birth or naturalization certificate of citizenship" "If applying for NATURALIZATION as a member of the United States Armed Forces; your discharge certificate, or form DD214" I'm definitely not applying as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. Should I bring my marriage certificate regardless of my situation at the time of the interview? Should I also bring tax returns from the past 5 years? Also, I thought that I needed to bring proof of 5 years of residency in the U.S., but now I don't see the requirement anywhere. Do I need copies of apartment leases from the past 5 years? Thank you in advance!
  7. Wow, thank you so much for the details!! I really appreciate it. Having read all of your responses here, I've just gone ahead and made a new account. So far so good! Thank you, guys!! And wow, My USCIS looks so different now! Maybe they lost my account when they updated their website...
  8. Thank you for your reply! Yesterday, I was able to connect with a human! I tried saying "Infopass". He said my question will be handled higher up and someone will email me within 7 days, and he also gave me a number to call in case I don't hear from anyone. So I guess I'll wait for that first, but.. in case this fails, I was wondering if you tried making a new account yourself and if that didn't work either? I'm worried that if I file my application by mail, the process would slow down. Did you file your N-400 by mail? How long did it take to hear from them?
  9. Was this ever resolved? I'm having the same issue, although I haven't tried creating a new account. I want to make sure it is ok to make a new account.
  10. Oh, really!? I wish that USCIS told us that on their website. I thought I had to use the same account throughout my life! Have you also created a new account?
  11. Hi everyone, It's been a while since I used My USCIS, and now that I want to log in again, it doesn't let me. Right now, I want to use My USCIS to file for citizenship. The last time I used My USCIS account is when I moved to my current address 3 years ago, to file address change. I tried "forgot password" and tried with multiple emails too, although I do know which one I used before because I have some past emails from USCIS. Every time I try the "forgot password" link and get an "instruction" email, it says this: "This address does not have an associated account. If you previously accessed your USCIS myAccount account online, you may have used a different email address. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE" And that's it. So I messaged them using the contact form on the website last week. No response. So I tried calling USCIS today. I cannot get to a human. The robot sends me email instructions that I've already gone through (leads me to send them a message on the website). I tried "speak with representative" multiple times and then it would end the call. What should I do? Has this happened to anyone before? What could be the reason? Does our account get terminated after a certain period of inactivity? Should I just make a new account?? I'm wondering if I need to go through Infopass? If I could resolve this issue without going to USCIS in person, I'd love that. Please help!! Thanks!!
  12. Hi everyone, So I haven't applied for citizenship yet due to some personal reasons, and I'd like to know more about reentry permit as well. I see that the form looks simple, but there is part 4 Information about Proposed Travel. If I want to move to a European country for a job but haven't even found a job, can I still write that and apply? Like by saying "to take an employment" for "4.1.a purpose" and listing possible European countries for "4.1.b."? Is it ok to not have the detail of who the employer would be at the time of filing? And how much time in advance should I apply? If I wait until I actually have a job offer and accept it, then would it be too late to get the reentry permit on time? How long does it usually take to get one? I read that if you get biometrics done, you can leave the U.S. and get the permit at the embassy in the other country as long as you were physically in the U.S. at the time of filing; is this correct? How soon after application do you usually get biometrics done? Anyone here who has filled out the reentry permit before? Thanks in advance!
  13. Do the Philippines allow dual citizenship? If you're still a citizen of your home country, you should be able to use that passport. I think the trouble is when you come back to the U.S. When you come back to the U.S., you will have to use your U.S. passport even if you have another passport; that's what I've read recently and heard from other people I know. I wonder if you can get your U.S. passport at an U.S. embassy in the Philippines. But with expeditated passport application, I'd think you will get your U.S. passport on time.
  14. Hi everyone, I'm considering applying for a citizenship myself, but I was wondering.. can we get out of the U.S. as soon as biometrics are done? It looks like many of you got that appointment immediately. Is the actual date for biometrics pretty soon too? I know that when your case is approved and have the ceremony, you will have to be in the U.S., but I read somewhere that as long as you come back to the U.S. by then, you can go to another country after something is done.. am I understanding correctly? I'm asking because I want to be able to attend a job fair abroad and I don't think I can get sworn in before then. Please let me know!!
  15. Oh, that's right, so this person's reentry permit would have been expired if he/she had had one.. Is this person trying to get a green card from scratch? Is the thread on Visa Journey?
  16. Thank you for your comment. But I'm pretty sure that if the Japanese government found that out, I'd be in trouble. My friend's father who did that with his Korean passport got into trouble for that, so I don't want to risk it.. but thank you for taking your time to Google and leave me a comment!
  17. Thank you! Do you know if the person who's been gone for 20 years had a reentry permit beforehand? Did they just keep renewing the permit?
  18. Wow, thank you, each of you, for your response! It's great to hear that the naturalization process is picking up. I will look more into naturalization then; it seems like it is the best option for me.
  19. Hi everyone, I've been a permanent resident of the U.S. through marriage to a U.S. citizen for a decade now. I haven't applied for American citizenship, because I'm Japanese and Japan doesn't allow dual citizenship. However, I don't go there often and haven't been there for some years now.. Currently both my husband and I are interested in moving to Europe. We could only achieve this if I get a job in Europe and get him a spousal visa. I'm not even at the stage yet where I have a job in Europe, but I want to start looking. If at all possible, I want to move sometime next year after the summer.. I have details on how I might be able to get a job there for my profession; that's not my question here. What is complicated for me is that I'm not a U.S. citizen, and I don't know how long we would be in Europe. Hopefully the rest of our lives, but it all depends on how long I can hold a valid visa there and if they will approve visas to both of us at all. I know that if I live in an EU country for 5 consecutive years, I can become a citizen there, so I guess as long as I can hold a visa for 5 years in one country, I will have a home. But if I can't, we will need a place to go back, which would be the U.S. (I doubt that we will ever live in Japan; I've been keeping my Japanese citizenship because my whole family is there and for some time during the pandemic, only citizens were allowed to enter Japan) I'm very much aware that if I leave the U.S. for more than a year without prior permission from the U.S., I will lose my green card. I was wondering... How easy and fast would it be to get approval before leaving the U.S.? Do I need to have a job offer (reason for leaving the U.S. for more than a year) in Europe at the time of applying for the permission to re-enter the U.S.? Do I need to know at the time of applying for permission how long I will be out of the U.S.? Could I extend my stay out of the U.S. after leaving the U.S. if I have the permission to re-enter? If my husband successfully moves to Europe with me after, would we still be able to move back to the U.S., up till how many years after? The thing is, we really don't know how long we will be out or whether it would be permanent. Has anyone here moved back and forth between the U.S. and another country with a green card? Probably the safer option for me is to just give up my Japanese citizenship and become a U.S. citizen first (but would love to hear more about the above option first because my parents are getting old in Japan) Currently I meet all the requirements to qualify for the citizenship. But if I do that, How long would the naturalization process be? As a naturalized citizen, would it really not matter where my permanent residence is in the world if I was to come back in the future? Would I have to live in the U.S. for a certain period of time after obtaining the citizenship? Another possible option is to just go to Europe and lose my green card. If I do that, Would my husband be able to petition for me again for another green card in the future? Would he have to be in the U.S. at the time to petition for me? If I fail to obtain another green card in the future, could I still come to the U.S. as a tourist, or would I be forever banned from the U.S.? Currently I'm just brainstorming every possibility, so please only be informative. Thank you in advance!!
