  1. Hi everyone! I have a quick question.

I filed for marriage based US residency when we had been married for less than a year. Our two-year wedding anniversary is this December. When I got my package from the DR consulate it specified I have to remove conditions in two years after I received my GC (received it in late July). However, upon looking at the card itself, it says it's valid for 10 years! I kinda naturally assumed a CR1 greencard would only be valid for two. Is there an error here? I still plan on filing to remove conditions later on but...then I just don't get a new card then?

    Thanks!

  2. Okay, so more has happened on my re-entry permit application process. Recap: my original notice of action with my biometrics appointment was sent to me on Jul 5. I never received it. July 17 I went to the Spokane Field office for an INFOPASS appointment to see if they could at least tell me when my biometrics appointment would be. They did mi fingerprinting right away. I have a paper stating when were my biometrics taken, etc. My status on the USCIS website says they mailed a notice for a biometrics appointment on august 5. I called USCIS and explained my biometrics were already taken and the lady said they could've been rejected. I'm already out of the country. Is my re-entry permit application going to be denied?

  3. You know, I was wondering how long could it really take to get a letter from Lincoln Nebraska to Dryden, Washington. We need to get all our mail on the post office because USPS will not deliver to our actual house (at least we get the PO box for free). Usually they will redirect anything with our home address to the PO box but I don't trust that mail guy...

Anyway, I ended up going to the Spokane office to see what the information desk would say (which by the way is only open for an hour and a half and you need to make an info pass appointment anyway, even if you are right there and there is no one there. Seems a bit pointless). So the lady was not super nice at first since my appointment that i made right then would be for tomorrow but then I don't know what happened...she decided to help and just set up the fingerprinting for right then. I think she realized how pointless it would be to send me home while there was no on there and the guy who did the fingerprints seemed more than willing to do it. So they took my fingerprints today...and certainly took their time.

So yeah at least in Spokane you will not be able to talk to someone at the office without an infopass appointment...but at least it's done. Nw let's just hope it goes a little more smoothly from here. I asked for my permit to be sent to Shanghai on my original application, which is where I'll be...hoping for the best. I don't think I'll need one but I want to be safe for the future more than anything else since I'll be in shanghai for a few months without coming back to the states.

  4. Hey everyone,

I have a question. I applied for a re-entry permit on Jul 3. Got the email notification a few days after. So far, so good, one would think. According to the USCIS website, they accepted my fingerprinting fee and mailed me a notice on July 5 for the next steps (I hope that means my fingerprinting appointment - my poor husband is baffled at why does Homeland Security need my fingerprints for every single process, so he's a bit frustrated). The catch is we a) haven't received the notice in the mail yet, and b) plan to leave the US on the 28th. I really do not plan on being outside the US for more than 6 months but life happens and we want to be on the safe side. Since I have a receipt number, I've called USCIS a couple times to see if they can at least tell me when will my appointment be or something along those lines (does it really take this long for a piece of mail to arrive from Nebraska to Washington? Man, I got my NOA1 during the CR1 process quicker in the Dominican Republic, famous for having a VERY unreliable mail system), but they tell me the same as in the website. I requested the application to be expedited and they can't even tell me if that was taken into consideration or not. Would an INFOPASS appointment help me at all? I originally requested the permit to be delivered abroad so I'm not worried about that part, just the biometrics

    Thanks for the input!

  5. Well, I haven't tried with USCIS again...my status still shows up as Accepted on the ELIS website. I did go to the SSA office today and my SS card (replacement) hadn't been requested so the rep requested one for me and I should get it in 10 bus days. I'll keep checking ELIS until its been 30 days after POE...or should I be calling USCIS earlier than that? I'm starting to think I should allow those 30 days aft POE before I get worried.

Could that letter you're referring to be the welcome letter people get when they first arrive?

I did get my state ID...Washington state IDs are delivered in the mail in about a week if you per-apply online and are approved and so forth. So that helps a little

  6. I have serious doubts about ELIS and how much USCIS people know about it, honestly. I paid my fee June 3. POE at EWR June 24. My husband got the $165 deducted from his account but nothing has happened. My understanding was that card production would be triggered once I hit the POE (part of the reason why I paid so in advance - did not want surprises), but the status at ELIS still just shows as Accepted. I tried calling USCIS and seeing if someone could tell me if my card was being produced but the lady I got (which had the thickest accent ever) said (or at least this is what I understood she said) that card production would be triggered 30 days after POE (that doesn't quite make sense to me...)

I also requested a replacement SS card (I had a SSN from my student visa says)...and nothing yet. One would think that a replacement card would take less time; I remember when I applied for my SSN the first time it took about 10 days for it to show up at my mailbox, but then again that was almost 4 years ago. Maybe things are slower now.

I don't know if I should be worried or not...

  7. Sorry I'm posting this here, I could not get the link to work on the actual POE Reviews section (kept asking me that I needed to be registered but I was already logged in - can somebody move it to the right section please?)

My POE was June 24. I noticed when I was checking in in Santo Domingo (SDQ) that a couple of other people were traveling with their IV packets as well. So I thought: well, I won't be alone at least.

The one hiccup on our trip was that we couldn't land in EWR for a while because there were thunderstorms and they had stopped all inbound flights. We didn't have enough fuel to circle around in Newark so we had to go to Baltimore to fuel up. Depending on how things went in Newark the pilot said we might have to do Customs there (how? who the hell knows...that was not an international airport)...in the end, just fuel, Baltimore cannot process people coming from an international flight, back to Newark we went after about an hour of fueling up and waiting.

We got to EWR, there were just two lines: visitors and US Citizens/Residents line. So I went to the Visitors line and my husband went to the US Citizens line. I went to Window 10 right away (there was no one in line - we arrived around 5 pm or so), and handed my passport and IV packet to the CBP officer. He was friendly, not overly so but not an a-hole. He called for an escort but since no one came after about 15 seconds he took me to the elevator himself. He said they just needed to take my fingerprint. Another 3 people who were going to secondary inspection joined us in the elevator.

I had been in secondary inspection before once (while on my student visa) so the room wasn't surprising. It's rather big, a few booths for the CBP officers and quite a few chairs. It's to the side of baggage claim. They called two people ahead of me. When I was called, I was asked to sign in two sides of a form, then to put my right index on a pad. I thought it was one of those digital pads, but it was an actual ink pad! So the officer asked me to put my fingerprints on two slots of the same form, gave me a piece of paper towel to clean my finger, and sent me off. No questions at all from anyone.

That was it. Easiest thing ever.

  8. My apologies for the super long review. Since I didn't ramble on the interview I'll just have to ramble now.

I suppose to begin with, let's start with picking up the medical results at Consultorios de Visa. I headed there around 10am yesterday or something like that - 1 easy carro publico for me - asked the guard outside where to pick up results, he directed me to the side street. There is a separate office that just handles results - that was a pleasant surprise for me, for some reason I thought I'd had to deal with the craziness of the general section. There was 1 lady in front of me picking up her results, but another person became available. I handed her my passport, she found my results, I left. Took about 2 minutes from the moment I arrived at the building.

We had read some interview accounts and gone over some "tricky" questions - I made sure he remember my sisters' real names (apparently my parents had a thing for naming their daughters with names starting with A and they all kinda sound the same). We put together copies of the I-864 for him and his dad, the co-sponsor. We had some additional pictures arranged in chronological order, the originals of all the boarding passes I had sent to USCIS with the original petition, and then just put in the front of the folder the stuff they first ask people for: passport, Banco Popular receipt, police certificate, medical results. Last, I found my old passport that had my tourist visa on it and decided to take it with me (I actually took my current passport and the last two before that one - the DR should seriously issue passports for 10 years instead of 6).
We watched some TV and I "went to bed" at around 11 or so. Didn't really sleep. I figured we really had nothing to be worried about but interviews are like tests in my eyes and they freak me out. So it was a night of light sleep.
We woke up at 5, went over the things we needed to take, including cash to pay Domex and so forth. Had some breakfast and were off to the Consulate by 6 (our interview was at 7:45). Took the Metro and were there by 6:10 or so. Long. ###. Line. We got lucky number 038. The longest lines were for the non-immigrant visas and people whom I think were going to window 27 outside. My husband was in by 6:15. Sadly, I was in front of a bunch of women with baby bags so going through security was a PAIN. Ladies, I strongly recommend NOT bringing a purse. I had to bring one because I didnt have pockets in my pants. I decided to bring one of those small crossbody ones since I didn't need to put much in it and once in went through security kinda fast. But by the time I got in it was almost 6:30. My husband got a really good seat right by a fan. Score.
They started calling numbers around 7 or so. Well, the wait was pre-tty long. We ended up being called to window 18 around 9:20 or so. The lady on Window 18 asked my name, if my mother was still alive (yes), did we have kids in common (nope), and took my passport, Banco Popular receipt, police certificate (you all were right, no translation required for this one -YAY!) and the medical manila envelope. She gave me back the CD with the X-ray image and sent me to Window 15 with my interview letter to get fingerprints done. Today they were making a big effort to make sure people had their stuff ready by the time they got to the window so it went by pretty fast. Lots of people with kids on interviews today. And lots of green slips of paper.
At around 10 or so we were called to Window 26 (my husband had been secretly hoping for that window since it's not in front of absolutely everyone. Lucky duck.)
We get over there and there is an American lady ready to interview us, with our file wide open in front of her to my original I-130 petition and the famous green slip already attached. My husband later told me he wished he would've known that was THE green slip we'd been hoping to see.
She asked what language were we doing the interview in. We both said English was fine. I think she was very relieved because she'd been doing all her interviews in Spanish up to that point. Then she swore us in.
First thing right off the bat, she asked if a picture we had included in the package was Alki Beach (a beach in West Seattle - it was). She said; "I cannot look at any more pictures of you guys, you're making me miss Seattle so much!" Turns out she had lived in Seattle for 18 years! My husband went to college and grad school in Seattle, we met there, so Seattle is home to us. We talked a bit about how she was liking the heat vs. the perennial gray skies in Seattle and got into a brief conversation about how she misses Starbucks even though she doesn't drink coffee - it's the coffee shop environment.
Then she asked us how long had we been together (my husband answered - Oct 2009; I added we met in Aug/Sept), she asked me if I had lived in other countries aside from the US, did I have a visa during that time (I replied I had a still valid tourist visa and had done my masters while on a F1). She then asked me if I had my passport with my tourist visa. I handed it to her and she stamped it with what I later saw was a "Cancelled Without Prejudice" stamp. At this point, I'm thinking, you better issue my new visa now. :P
Then she asked if my husband lived here, what did he do for work (yes; 4th grade teacher), what was the plan once we got to the US (continue looking for jobs) and where were we going to live (in Dryden with his mom for the time being - I explained). After each question she would just type in her computer - totally dead air.
Then she just tore the green ticket thingy and said "You are approved, go pay the delivery service - Domex"; we said thank you, went to the Domex counter, chose picking it up at their office, gave phone numbers and email, got our change, left. Done by 10:10am.
This afternoon at around 4:30 or so I went to the CEAC website, application status showed Visa Issued. My husband got an email from Domex saying they'd begun processing our passport or whatever it was at around 6.
We realize we've been extremely lucky in how quickly this whole thing has happened. We've pretty much done it in about 6 months (we sent the petition on Nov. 21). It really comes down to providing as much evidence as you can from the head start, following directions, and sending everything required on each step exactly when it's required. We had no RFEs, no payment issues, got through NVC in about a month, really no complaints. We did everything except the translations on our own. We would've never done it without the incredibly valuable resources available on this site. That includes the "human resources". Saylin was essentially my NVC living Wiki and everything she said would happen was spot-on. Thank you very much and good luck on your ROC!
I was very glad to have freaked out about nothing today. Expected POE June 24.

  9. We got a Case Complete on Mar. 15 and found out about our interview via email. Our interview date was assigned on Mar. 29 for May 15. You do the math. If you don't want to wait for the email you can call both NVC AND THE DOS to find out your interview date. They have access to your records - just have your case number in hand. The numbers for both are in one of those NVC filers threads at this forum.

    Good luck!

  10. Hi all! Our CR1 interview is on May 15. My question is, I have a valid US tourist visa that expires in 2015. It's in my old passport (I decided to renew my passport because my old one was going to expire in a year and well, not a lot of Dominican consulates in the West Coast). My guess is that if our CR1 is approved, my tourist visa will be no longer valid (it's only logical). Do I take my old passport with me to the POE so they can cancel it or do I take it to the interview? Should I even do anything?

    Thanks!

(Kids, listen to Saylin when she says interviews get assigned ALL along the month). Also I guess they've just started rolling May interviews - but it might be a Santo Domingo thing.

  13. Hi everyone!

I already know I will need a reentry permit - I'm trying to do my research ahead of time and see what my options are. We are currently at the NVC stage (waiting for the magic words Case Complete). After two years here in the Dominican, we decided to leave and going back to the US was certainly the first option as a matter of logic. We started our CR1 process in late November. We weren't quite expecting it would go this quick (we decided to take a shot as I wanted to be able to start applying for jobs in the US as soon as I got there). We figured we would try and see if our process would be done or close to done by the time we would leave the country which we hope is late June.

Anyway, as we are finalizing at NVC my husband got a very good job offer abroad which after much consideration he decided to take. We are estimating (if we get no checklists at NVC or APs at interview time) we should get an interview in May and leave the country in late June. My husband must be at his new appointment in late July, which would give us about a month in the US. Is it realistic to expect/hope/request for a biometrics appointment within that timeframe once I apply for a re-entry permit? The plan is to apply, get biometrics done and get the permit sent to the US consulate in our new location. What are our options?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  14. Hi everyone.

    (1) Im been reading on here and now im confused lol. Does my wife need to get the police clearence for up coming interview in maiden name or now married name like it is on her new passport and her cedular but cedular has the same ID number?

    (2) Also does the ds230 need to match exactley as passport? The ds230 has been filled out in her married name but here in DR the added her miden name with mine together, but the ds230 just has my last name not her maiden name along with mine?

    Thanks for your advice..

    Hi there!

I actually called the NVC about this a few days back (any of the Higher Ranked Awesome Visa Knowledge Extraordinaires here, please correct me if I'm wrong).

For the purposes of names, the NVC will work with her name as it is on her passport. So, if she changed her name after you guys began this process she needs to send a copy of the new passport with her IV application form - the explanation the NVC operator gave me is that they use the name as in the passport (which has to match the DS-230) to issue the green card later on. If she changed her name on her cedula her police certificate will come out wit that name.

The DR and the US have different styles on married names. I'd suggest calling the NVC before you send anything.

  15. We are in the process now of getting the CR1 for my husband. I would love for him to come to the U.S. for my sister's wedding in September. He has a valid tourist visa currently.

    1) Can he come visit?

    2) is there a certain point in the process when he could not visit? Like after NOA2 or after submitting forms to NVC?

    Any advice is welcomed!

Hi! I'm in the same boat - I have my CR-1 process underway (just paid AOS bill) and just returned from the US after a 5 day trip with my husband. Yes, he can travel with a tourist visa. My advice? a) Be prepared to prove that he will return home (show return ticket, copy of apartment lease, bank account, employment letter...things that show that he has strong ties to his country and will go back). Bring copies of the stuff USCIS or NVC or both have sent you. I went through CBP only one question asked: how long are you staying? I was not asked for any paperwork neither about my immigrant visa process but if he does get asked tell the truth and have proof that you're doing things legally - and will go back home to conclude the process. Good luck!!!

(Anyone else on the forum please let me know if I'm missing anything or if I'm wrong - I'm mainly speaking from my recent experience)
