  1. My husband is nigerian, and yes has been here for a while as you can see in my timeline. He does not display those traits at all. Please don't make excuses for people who are behaving poorly, they will only do as much as you allow. You should be in a relationship where you do not feel abused and you feel open to expressing yourself. You should be able to talk to your husband because he should be your best friend. Ultimately someone who does not care about how much they hurt you is not one for you. Nigerian men can be loving and there is no one size fits all, there are several men from other nationalities who behave the same way. I wish you well and please understand that you only have one life to live, don't waste time and moments on someone who is not worth your time. Only you can determine that. You stated that this only started a year and a half ago, I don't know how long you have been together but if you did have some good times then perhaps, you guys can try to sit and figure out if being married is what you both want and establish boundaries of acceptable/unacceptable behaviors.

  2. It is not a rumor mill. I posted from personal experience. Like i said, email the embassy to clarify but others are right, it is up to the CO. They did not ask my husband about how much i make currently at the time, it was based on the last three years which i was a student but i was making way above the poverty line during the interview. She plainly stated that they do not accept cosponsors for the k visas. This was not an issue with the CR-1 only the k-3 for us and k-1 for another poster. Things may have changed but you should try to clarify so that you know what steps to take and also for peace of mind cos i know how nerve wrecking this process is, but there is light at the end of the tunnel as that whole process for us is a distant memory :) . I just realized i've been keeping up with VJ for 7 years!

  3. during the interview, the CO said we had good evidence but that they do not accept co-sponsors for the K-visa, they didn't even look at the co-sponsor information and I was at the time making more than the required ( above the poverty line) but not reflected on prior years returns only on current pay stubs. so we had to continue with the CR-1 same co-sponsor info and during that interview, no questions asked, they had notes from before and approved instantly. Now at the time a week prior, there was another applicant also here on VJ, she had the same issue but different CO. The CO told her about not accepting the co-sponsor for k visa, however she begged and the CO made an exception. I had informed my husband of this at the time in case the same issue came up during our interview. and he did try to see if this CO would make an exception and she refused.

You can always email the consulate to clarify.

  4. Just so you know. if you do K-1 with a cosponsor, lagos will deny you. This is from personal experience. They accept co-sponsors for the CR-1/IR-1 but not for the k visas. Although the document says you can use a co-sponsor and other countries/consulates allow that, lagos does not. You are better off getting married and using a co-sponsor for the I-864.

  5. When you are an IR1/CR1 generally when the case is sent to lagos, the interview is the following month. Have you contacted NVC about that? Also how were you able to get an expedite?

  6. we have been married 5 years now! Very happy. Of course every union has it's ups and downs but i can't really say i have any major complaints. We get along very well. We have a beautiful 1 year old son and another child on the way :) wishing everyone the best and i am greatful to God to be able to post in this section.

  7. Hello Momov31,

just wanted to wish you well, I know what it is like to be denied and go through the long process. I have been in VJ for quite a while and i stop by every now and then. I have seen people who fought for a while and eventually prevailed even when it seemed almost impossible. Stay strong. Personally It was difficult using the senators but I do believe that you should try the CR-1 route. you will run into similar issues as it will be documented in your file but really really over prepare with your evidence and plan on being there at the interview so that they can see the dedication that you have for each other. Just wanted to add to the positive outcomes. We are doing really well in our marriage/relationship and have a beautiful son.

  8. Are you a citizen or a resident? K-3 generally is faster for some, but the CR-1 is less work once they get here because you don't have to adjust status, you just get the green card in the mail. You need to apply for the I-130/CR-1 before you can apply for the K-3. Do both and follow which one comes faster for you. Personally lawyers are a waste of money dealing with nigeria. You can save money and fill out paperwork by yourself. Nigeria does not give preferential treatment for people with lawyers. Considering your immigration history, you need to collect and present as much evidence as possible for your interview.

  9. Has anyone been successful in bringing their mother/ mother in law from nigeria to visit. My mother-in-law wants to come visit and see her grandson. I know approval rate for visitor's visa is pretty low so i am hoping for some suggestions on any who may have gone through the process as to how the interview went and the application process went.

  10. Hello Kiwib99, I remember you from 2005 when you were still doing your K1. It's so refreshing to see people from the past come and post again. My hubby and I have a son who is two months old. We will probably be traveling when he is about a year old so please come back and post as to how your experience with your daughter went and i hope it goes smoothly.

  11. in a few months, we would have been married 4 years. still together and loving it :) no Major problems, we are pretty much in tune with one another. we have the usual squabbles as in any relationship. we both share our daily responsibilities of work, chores, cooking etc. Good luck with your relationship and we both wish you the best.

  12. Congratulations! I am so happy that everyone who were having the long struggles like you and peglibr will finally be able to put the visa nightmares behind you. I Good luck with everything and you serve as proof and hope for others who are going through the visa struggles.

  13. Does anyone know from personal exprience how long it takes from the day of your interview til actually getting the Visa?? And if it's not the same day.....why do they make you wait?? Do they tell you the day of the interview if you're getting the Visa? Or do they keep you in suspense til it's actually in your hands? Thanks in advance for your replies!!!!!!

It usually takes a couple of days to a week because they have to do another name check which is like a background check, they have to prepare all your documents that you show at the point of entry and their machine has to print the visa on the passport. They do tell you on the day if and when you will get the visa

  14. don't really post much but spend a lot of time reading. I've also been around for a while. We are going on our third year of marriage and everything is going great! It's really nice to see all the updates from everyone as i had been wondering about a lot of the old timers.

  15. The embassy allowing him to retake the medical really depends on which part he didn't pass. There are different laws regarding that. I am surprised that he didn't know prior to the interview cos the doc usually tells you if you passed or not before they give you the sealed medical envelope to take to the interview. Good luck. I hope he will be able to work it out.

  16. I think the reason people use JFK is because of the issue surrounding transit visas. You get conflicting information as to whether your SO would need a transit visa ( for K-1/k-3) if they were connecting in amsterdam/london etc. In my case, we had the CR-1 visa and wanted to go through london and they said we would need to apply for the transit visa for him to be able to connect through london or amsterdam so we just did JFK because i didn't want to worry about him being sent back. JFK is also a POE that issues temporary EADs ( a plus for the k-visas).

  17. Hi Moon1968, I just wanted to wish you strength cos i'm sure you are going through so many emotions right now. This time right now is temporary and will come to pass and you both will be together. My hubby and i remember how hard it was to go through the process of being temporarily denied but we don't feel the pain anymore. I did want to say that it is a good thing that the DOS were specific to you as to what was being investigated. Wishing you all the best. S&S

  18. Only NVC schedules for interview for CR-1/IR-1. Lagos embassy does not set them, lagos sets for the k-visas. After your case is complete at NVC it can take anywhere from 3-7months for them to schedule the interview. They schedule it a month before the actual interview date. My case stayed at NVC for 7 months post case completion. K- visas are faster but when they get here you have all the aos/EAD paperwork to do which can take months. With the CR-1, once they get here, their green card is sent and can start work sooner. You can take a look at my timeline.

  19. My husband came through JFK from Nigeria and he ended up missing his connecting flight and was stuck in New York for 10hours. Immigration held him for about 3 hours. 5-6hours should be sufficient enough.

Did he find out what "alerted" immigration to cause them to hold him for so long? What did they do while they were holding him?

It wasn't just him, he said that all the nigerians with the visa packets were processed last. Most of the time, they were just sitting and waiting
