  1. Thanks - I'll pass that along. For some reason, he thinks he needs proof of his parents' names, and was reluctant to make another trip out to the gongzheng chu, as travel in Shanghai is extremely difficult right now.
  2. Almost exactly 10 years ago I registered on this site to ask a question about my wife's green card application process. Now we're planning to bring her parents over to the US, but we're having some trouble collecting all the documents. My FIL was born at home prior to 1945, so there's essentially no record of his birth. To the best of his knowledge, he had already moved out of his parents' house before the hukou system was even introduced, and neither of his parents are still living. At the gongzheng chu, they said "bring us some documents and we'll notarize them," but he doesn't have any official documents saying he's the son of his parents. Has anyone run into this issue before? If so, what documents did you use instead of the "white book" birth certificate? Can he just get his shenfen zheng or hukou ben translated and notarized?
