I misspelled "daughter" in the topic, lol, I find it hard to type on the IPad.

My wife became a US Citizen July 11, 2017, and she would like to petition for her Mom and Dad to come live here with us..  We've filled out both petitons, but there is a slight problem on her Dad's petition and I have no idea what to do.

Her Mother and Father live in Vietnam and they had a non legal wedding ceremony in 1982 right before my wife was born, at the time they never went to get a marriage certificate to make their marriage legal.  When my wife was a few years old they got the marriage certificate.  The problem is they lost the certificate when my wife was 24, and when they went to the police station to get a replacement they said they couldn't find it.  So basically her parents got remarried when my wife was 24 years old.  Her Mom and Dad have lived together for over 35 years in the same house in the same village, but how can we prove that they've really been married since my wife was just a baby? 

I guess my question is how does my wife show she was legitimated by her father?  She has a birth certificate and a family book both showing her fathers name on both documents.  But with the marriage certificate showing they got married when she was 24 it looks a little funny.  My wife has no way to show that her Dad supported her for her whole life, because they mostly use cash for everything in Vietnam, so I'm hoping someone has some ideas on what I should include in his petiton.  Can my wife and her Dad get a DNA test to prove he really is her Dad or is that not what they are looking for?

i was attending the 2:30 but i got there early enough to have attended the 1pm one. if you saw a big 6' 2"  guy wearing a blue shirt and a fetching tie. that was me

I don't recall seeing you, of course I was just excited to get this over with.

I wish I would have messaged you before the ceremony, I just assumed they only did one ceremony a day, (until the security guard asked which ceremony we were there for).

I was the 6'4" guy with the screaming 2 year old son, lol.  Luckily I brought my teenage daughter, she took him out to the waiting area so he wouldn't make the ceremony to uncomfortable for everyone else.

Today went smoothly.no issues really beyond it was done and over so quickly. Didn't think it would feel much, if any different  but honestly i'm realizing a weight has been lifted. almost a release. no more visas, fingerprints, background checks, means testing, renewal dates, and all the other hoops and jumps I have had to go through to reach this point today.

 

biggest surprise for me is how physically and emotionally Drained  I feel.

I received a text message from the same phone number at 1:15am this morning, and then again at about noon today.  My wife's oath ceremony is in less than 48 hours.

I checked online and it still says the same thing it's said for almost a month,  "Oath Ceremony Notice Was Mailed".  I hope this is just a glitch and they aren't trying to reschedule her ceremony.

Should I contact them tomorrow to see if something has changed?  I really don't want to drive 2 hours and find out they changed the date.

We finally got an email update from USCIS today at 12pm that my wifes Oath Ceremony has been scheduled.  I know that the next ceremony for our area isn't until September 8th, so it will be interesting to see if we will be going to South Bend or Indianapolis.  I'll be more than happy to drive a couple of hours just to get this journey over with.

Interview is at 9:30 but aiming to be there for 9 or earlier. 

 

The letter said the process can take up to two hours.... but I'm guessing they are going to skip the English language part of the test...

Good luck Gary, just tell your wife to relax, and everything will go fine.  The whole process will barely take her 15 - 30 minutes.  The field officers there all seem pretty friendly and laid back.

EDJS, maybe our wives will have the oath ceremony on the same day, that would be cool to meet a fellow VJ'er in person.

My wife had her interview today.  Everything went great, she was given the paper that says they are recommending her for approval. 

Some info about the interview: they didn't call my wife back for 30 minutes after our appointment time, (which was no big deal to us) the IO apologized for keeping us waiting.  The IO asked to see my wife's passport and green card (I had slipped a little note of encouragement for my wife in the front of her passport and it surprised my wife when she opened the passport and the IO said aww how sweet of your husband). She asked my wife the following 6 questions:

Where is the Statue of Liberty?

Who was the first President?

What is one promise you make when you become a US citizen?

Who is the Governor of your state now?

Name two National Holidays

Why do some states have more Representatives than other states?

My wife got all six correct, so they went on to the writing part.  This is the sentence she had to write, "Presidents Day is in the month of February".

Then they reviewed the N400 application for like 5 minutes, and then the IO said congratulations you passed and are being recommended for approval.  She told my wife her oath ceremony should be in about 45 to 60 days.

The whole interview barely lasted 15 minutes.  

On a side note I saw 2 different applicants come out with the IO, and each time the IO asked to speak to the applicants spouse, and the IO told them I'm sorry but your spouse just doesn't understand English at all, I'm not out right denying them, but I'm going to give you two to three months to work with your spouse and if they come back for the next interview and they can't answer the questions in English and correctly then they will be denied.  Seeing that right before my wife went back really made me nervous.  Luckily my wife studied English in college for 4 years.

We got our interview notice today.  The interview is scheduled for 4-27-17.  Can someone please add this info to the list?  Thanks in advance for helping me add the update, I can't seem to get my iPhone to let me make the change.

I checked our case status online Monday 3-20-17, and it says that my wife was scheduled for an interview, and they will mail her an interview notice.  It's Friday and so far no notice yet, the suspense is killing me.  Hopefully the letter will come soon.

I wouldn't say that there isn't one field office processing cases within 5 months.  The Indianapolis, IN field office just sent me a text message on Monday 3-20-17 to inform us that my wife's interview is scheduled, we are just waiting on the letter to come in the mail to get an exact date.  If it's anything like the other 3 Indianapolis VJ members that filed close to the date I did, then our interview should be between 4-17-17 - 4-28-17.   Just about 10 weeks from when they received our N-400 packet till the date of our interview.  Add 3 to 4 weeks for the oath ceremony, that could possibly put us just a little over 3 months from our NOA to citizenship.

I-485 is dependent on whether you have interview or interview waiver.It is also dependent on local office backlog. People usually get green card faster if they got interview ( assumed that we got approved at interview day). Interview waiver is waiting process and it can take up to one year.

I guess the interview waiver could take up to a year for approval, but I think it is usually quicker than that. In our case we got the letter of a potential waiver of interview, and in less than two weeks we received my wifes green card in the mail. So less than four months from the day we sent the AOS paperwork to the day we got her greencard. So, I don’t totally agree with your comment about people that have an actual interview get their greencard faster. But then again every case is different and I guess none of us know how quick the USCIS will get to the case, so maybe it might take up to a year, but I hope it is faster for you guys.

It took my wife about two months to get her EAD/AP combo card, and around three and a half months to get approved for her green card. We got lucky I guess, because we got approved without having an inteview at our local USCIS office.

We had a problem getting the SS card in a timely manner due to the government shut down last October. We were able to get married about a month before she received her SS card. I'm not sure how it is in your state, but here in Indiana they didn't need to see a SS card for the marriage license. We just had to show her passport (they also looked at her K1 visa inside the passport), her translated birth certificate, and I think we also showed the I-94 (can't remember that part).

We haven't really had to show to many people her SS card since she's been here, and she's been here 5 months now. Basically just to obtain her state issued ID card at the BMV, we used the SS card, passport, birth certificate, I-94, and two utility bills with her name on them. Then to add her name to my checking account we used the ID card, SS card, passport, and I-94.

I will be mailing my AOS next week (marriage certificate is available on tuesday) So we will be sending it then.

My medical was in November 2013 (in flu season)

if they take 3 months to process it will be April when they do (not flu season)

I don't know what to do for the best. I don't really want anymore delays as I have a possible job offer here to that may be willing to wait for me. However, I don't want to spend anymore money. We are already getting bled dry by the AOS as it is. $1000 what is with that?!?!

PS. I am a 6ft 5" 24 year old male in great condition. Like I care about the flu... Pleeeeease stupid requirement

AleGwi, I just paid for my wife's AOS, and I'm pretty sure you're going to want to send a check for $1,070, it breaks down as a $985 for the AOS, and $85 for the Biometrics.

If you already knew the total was $1,070, sorry for bringing it to your attention, I just wanted to try to save you a headache later on

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it has to be an actual civil surgeon that you have to see, I don't think you can just go to your family physician.

When we went to the civil surgeon in our area, We used the below link to find one that is approved by the USCIS.

My wife was given a copy of her DS-3025 at her POE in Chicago, and we took that paperwork along with us to a civil surgeon to have that information transcribed to the I-693 and put in a sealed envelope. Unfortunately for us there are only two civil surgeons in my city and we wanted to get our AOS package sent off in a timely fashion, one of the doctors wanted us to wait two months for an appointment, and the other was available the next week. The only problem was the one that was available right away wanted $325.00 to basically do a simple exam, a TB skin test, give one missing vaccination, and to transcribe the DS-3025 form to the I-693. I thought about not getting the I-693 done and taking a chance of an RFE, because I didn't want to pay the $325.00, but in the end I just went ahead and paid the big fee so we could get everything sent off as quick as possible.

Even though you had the medical exam abroad within one year of your adjusting your status, from what I understand that DS-3025 form still needs to be transcribed to the I-693 form by a civil surgeon. So just take all your vaccination records, and the DS-3025 form to a civil surgeon and have them complete your I-693, shouldn't be a big deal. I've seen several people on here just send the DS-3025 only and get their green card no problem. But in your case you received an RFE, so you basically have no choice but to make an appointment with a civil surgeon and have them transcribe the DS-3025 to an I-693 form. As long as you already have all your vaccinations then you shouldn't need any additional shots and they will probably complete it at minimal cost and in a timely fashion.
