  1. Are you missing the point that when a lesser achieving person gets a seat undeserving, a better candidate is denied the place he earned.

In other words when a person checks "hispanic" or whatever in the box, it often enables him to gain what a more deserving person should have gotten.

Of course the other ugly side of this is when the deserving candidate is Black or hispanic and they did earn their place..... the sceptic baggage they are made to carry.

I haven't decided which is the greater wrong.

Where is that meme, of "it's time to stop posting"?

  2. Jeggings are one of the reasons I wanted to have a girl. I feel so superficial for saying that!! But yeah, I was an only child and I wanted to be an inspiration to my daughter like my mom (single mom) was to me. I am tickled to be having a boy though!

  3. I live in the DC area and was appalled that the gov't was shut down. There are so many people in my neighbourhood that work for the gov't. Notices were sent around in my building to contact the building manager regarding rent payments that people may not be able to afford because of the shutdown. People in other areas laughed saying it was no big deal. Here it was a huge deal.

  4. OMG so my husband came home today with the gifts from his works babyshower..and i almost cried when i saw this: http://www.amazon.com/Lazy-One-Infant-Caboose-months/dp/B00EP4YQDE/ref=sr_1_7?s=apparel&ie=UTF8&qid=1381968747&sr=1-7

it even says Banff Canada on it! our family baby shower we had hardly anything pink, lol well we got all sorts of clothes and blankets and things in pink smile.png I still can't believe his department did this for him. It was such a sweet thing to do for us.

That's awesome! Love the pj's! That was so sweet for them to do that for you guys. :)

  5. Not that any of you birthers care but this is from Snopes.

The editor of the biographical text about Barack Obama which was included in the booklet maintained that the mention of Kenya was an error on her part and was not based on any information provided to her by Obama himself:

Miriam Goderich edited the text of the bio; she is now a partner at the Dystel & Goderich agency, which lists Obama as one of its current clients.

"You're undoubtedly aware of the brouhaha stirred up by Breitbart about the erroneous statement in a client list Acton & Dystel published in 1991 (for circulation within the publishing industry only) that Barack Obama was born in Kenya. This was nothing more than a fact checking error by me — an agency assistant at the time," Goderich wrote. "There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. I hope you can communicate to your readers that this was a simple mistake and nothing more."

A New York Times article about Barack Obama published in 1990, a year before the Acton & Dystel promotional booklet was issued, identified his birthplace as Hawaii.

  6. My goodness you hit it on the head - I live on the opposite side of DC in Centreville VA and what a difference from Ontario. Customer Service in regular everyday stores can be sketchy - so many stores don't seem to have managers onsite so employees are constantly on their phones or chatting and not paying attention to their customers...that or they're all about 18 ......but overall I would say my neighbours are friendly. They wave to us when we drive by which is kind of cute. Back in ON I didn't even know who lived across the hall from me!

The people are different - and I am not racist, my daughter is biracial - African american/ black people are quite different - in ON I was quite accustomed to friends who had parents from the West Indies and everything that went along with that culture - Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados etc.... Here in this area - which is suprisingly 'Southern' in its attitudes...black people have been here for generations, potentially descended from slavery. There are some very poor areas around here - I can't even describe it, nothing like I'd ever seen in ON and it makes me sad. Those TV shows you see about the 'projects' in America are actually, sadly, common.

Yes, the black culture is just so different! I know there are more black people in Ontario than BC for sure. In BC most are actually from Africa or just recently arrived etc. So here it's like a different sub culture! My husband thought it would be shocking to me to see so many black people in one place and I don't find it shocking and it doesn't bother me, it's just different! He was worried I'd be afraid of black people I think, you know all the stereotypes there are! I told him, look, where I'm from...it's the white people who are sketchy! But yes, my husband has said that Virginia is more southern than anything, though I haven't seen too much of it other than Alexandria. We are actually going to McLean VA this weekend for the Colonial Market. One of the things I definitely love around here is there is a lot to do! Especially in DC (when the gov't opens again anyway) I love all the museums open to the public etc.

One thing I do notice though, is there lack of mention of much of First Nations in this area. They are buried very deep, which is a crying shame as I KNOW there is a lot of history here in that regard. The Native American museum in DC is really cool.

  7. You can start with this, its the same one they use in the stores - http://bit.ly/197vCYN

Yes! I've heard of that! I do find the coffee doesn't quite taste the same, but that's also probably because they don't have the 18% coffee cream in the states like they have in Canada. Then again, Tim Horton's coffee doesn't quite taste the same as it did 10 years ago either! Mostly it's the name that keeps me happy ;).

  8. 1) I moved to the Washington DC area - to a town called Greenbelt, MD. This is pretty far from west coast BC!

    2) Everything is different here! The people (mostly black and hispanic), the way people talk, there are SO MANY people. Driving makes me nervous as there are just so many highways and so much traffic! I always say to my husband, "where are all these people going?!". While food and gas are cheaper, everything else is so expensive. The weather is crazy hot and humid in the summer and I'm glad that part of the year is over! Customer service can be pretty lackadaisical but overall the people are friendly. Oh yes, and the medical system is crazy insane.

I feel more restricted, or "watched" here even though the states is touted as "land of the free". I thought Canada was the land of conservative, but the USA is way more conservative in their attitudes and actions, I find.

    3) I guess I didn't do too much to prepare. It was a fairly big culture shock to me and still is sometimes. I knew I wouldn't be able to work for a while, and then I got pregnant right away with no insurance. Ouch.

  9. Tim Hortons coffee makes a Tassimo T-disc variety so my husband and I order those from Amazon. I have my Metis sash on my bookshelf. I have lots of little bits of Canada around me. My husband knows it is my home and loves it as much as I do. When you go back home to visit you appreciate it so much more. OP - maybe buy a Hudson's Bay blanket to keep on the sofa.

  10. im really not judging either a that is not my place too as i do not know your partner and i feel very sorry for you in this situation

there is a possible chance i will be denied my k1 so feel your hurt mine not to do with drugs though

but did he not think as soon as he had the blood test he didnt clock on that illegals would be found its like any medical they check for things like that and also what did your fiance say when the doc asked if he ever took drugs ????

i hope you get it resolved really quick my heart and prayers are with you both

She already answered these questions. Also, it is a moot point - what's done is done: visa is denied due to drug use. Mistake made, learn from it, move on.

  11. I've been so stressed this week, waiting for our insurance policy numbers to arrive in the mail and they're still not here. There was a mix up with my husband's work and we're late getting our benefits info. They took double deductions off this paycheque because they didn't take any off last time. I'm worried that even though our benefits are dated from Oct. 1 on that they won't reimburse us for my prescriptions (1160$ so far). We have to start paying rent this month and this prescription cost is just killing us. I feel like the American medical system just holds you ransom and causes stress levels to go through the roof. I don't even know if my prescription will be covered because it was written before our benefits started, or if I have to get a new one written. Ugh! I'm anxious to get to see a real family Dr. too. Every time I think about things, I want to cry.

Kimbear, sounds like things are trying to progress! This is exciting, but the more I read about getting to the finish line, the more nervous I get too!

Lilac, that's cool you're getting maternity photos. I feel so self conscious about being pregnant (honestly, I just look fatter). I hope that it becomes obvious soon.

Management is spraying or baiting my apartment for insects on Monday, Happy Thanksgiving. I'm pretty bummed, I wanted to have a special meal, but I'll be washing dishes all day after they're done and cleaning all day Sunday getting ready for them. I haven't seen any bugs at all, I think it's just a yearly maintenance thing they do. I had all these big plans for Thanksgiving and have just been so lazy and tired to do anything. I definitely plan on making a pumpkin pie though either this weekend or early next week.

Been feeling really lonely this past week or so. I don't have any friends or family out here and my husband is so stressed and busy with work as a new teacher. I'm also a source of gossip among his family, so I stay away a bit. His mom and dad though have been great, I just wish his brother was more of a family type person as I'm an only child and would love to have that sibling connection. My mom is really struggling financially also so we can't afford to bring her out and she can't afford to take time off work.

Anyway, sorry for the long post but you guys are the closest people I know that know what it's like to be separated from your homeland!

  12. My interview was on Feb. 14 and there was an issue with my police certificate so I waited about an extra 10 days to have my visa in hand. Anything can happen: a paper can be forgotten etc. Vancouver is really good though, regardless. I left the country April 1st. I gave notice for my apartment on March 1 and quit my job March 23 a week before I left.

  13. I've tried the Herr's ketchup chips and they're awful. I miss Old Dutch chips. I hardly buy chips anymore because I just don't like them here. Also, good coffee is hard to find. Someone mentioned kicking horse coffee...great stuff! The British Smarties and Cadbury bars still taste different than the Canadian ones. I miss Aeros and Coffee Crisp of course. They have a similar bubble type bar put out by Hershey but it's more solid chocolate than bubbles. I also miss Bicks pickles. The canned tuna here is way different too.

  14. I would wait til the medical exam. My mother is a carrier of TB (has had the skin test and tested positive) but has never had TB in her life. I don't even remember them asking any sort of questions about whether you have tested positive as a carrier for TB, at the medical exam. Perhaps do some more research online about that?
