    OP...I feel sorry for you...
I've decided not to apply for the B2 for similar reasons... better just use the VWP.
I'm also sad for some of the nasty responses in this thread... some people have maybe never left the US Yes there are plenty of Americans traveling all over for little money and for months on end... just as we Europeans do
It's all a matter of priorities...you save money and then you go
Personally it's sounds like little money with $7000 for 6 months but I'm a big shopper hehe. Otherwise it's no problem to live on that amount....as long as you stay with friends it's no biggie.
Nobody from Europe goes to the US to get benefits or healthcare.... we already have that..
We go cos we enjoy it there and have friends there
And the working illegally... truth is he could have easily stayed on the VWP and done that but chose not to. Same with me and many others.
If someone truly wants to do that the fact they have a "normal fulltime" job at home is not gonna stop them... just sayin'

While I know nothing about the OP...I would like to say the above statement is far from the truth. Many many people from my country (Sweden) for instance go abroad for 4,5 or 6 months at a time...as tourists! Without having Bill Gates money It's called saving and taking a leave from work (or if you are retired). Though most of these people tend to go to Thailand or the Caribeean and maybe not the US. But it depends where you have friends, where you can go...
I know though that most of my US friends are lucky if they can get 3 weeks off a year...so yes there are differences. I sincerly hope that US embassys are aware of this when they give out the visas
