  1. My husband, then fiancé, also had his medical in Toronto, and took the train to Montreal. One day in Toronto for the medical exam, although he was actually there for 2 1/2 hours. He personally picked up the results a couple of weeks later. Three days for the Montreal trip should be sufficient. You will leave immediately after the interview, and then you will wait and wait some more for your mailer. Good luck to you, and like it or not, you are petitioning to eventually become a US citizen, these are the steps that have to be taken. We all get through it :)

  2. The lady at the DMV provided inaccurate information. There are no temporary social security numbers -- that's what the ITIN is for, basically. 001 is issued by the state of New Hampshire. If you applied within NH, you get a social that starts with 001, 002 or 003.

Do NOT expect to receive another SSN. The one you have is permanent.

Thank you so much for the quick reply-that's what I thought, but when she said that, it through us for a loop, lol!!

  3. Ok, forgive my ignorance, but I have a question regarding the SSN. After my fiance was here a couple of weeks, we applied for, and received a SSN. It begins with the numbers 001, and the lady working at our local DMV led us to believe that it is only a temporary number. Will he be issued a different number, or is this the only one? I understand that the card now states for work purposes, and he does have a valid EAD. I guess we're wondering if this is the number he can use to start building credit with. Thanks everyone!

  4. EAD = Employment Authorization Document. AP = Advance Parole. SO, yes, that is your work permit. You can show it to prospective employers when requested until you get your GC. Once you get your GC, you no longer need the EAD/AP; your GC then becomes your work permit and travel [and re-entry into the U. S.) permit.

NOTE to Dar&Shan: Before you go out looking for your first job, you first need to take that EAD/AP together with your passport to the Social Security Administration nearest you and apply for an SSN Card; unless you already have one.

Thanks for the advice, but he got a SSN a couple weeks after he arrived :)

    Congratulations!

    Thank you!!!!!!

Congratulations and Good Luck in the job hunt!!

Thanks, he is soooo ready to start working, lol!!

  5. I got my drivers license in Virginia and I got it for 1 year. All I had to show them was my unexpired I94, my passport, marriage license, bank statement and my unexpired Ontario, Canada drivers license. When I get my green card I will go back and get my license for a longer period of time.

We showed the exact same documents as you, including the unexpired Ontario license, but he was only issued the 3 month license.

  6. It depends on your state and who you deal with at the DMV. They wouldn't issue me a learners permit without the approval notice for my GC. The lady at the DMV was adamant that a work permit wasn't enough. It is very difficult to get around here without a car too, he must be getting cabin fever! Hopefully the DMV will accept his EAD, if not maybe he can get the bus?

Unfortunately, our town is too small for public transit

Wait... How is your husband working without an EAD?

Oh, he's not working yet, we're just thinking ahead.

She didn't say that he was, I don't think. I think she meant that he was receiving approval to work, but how could he work without being able to drive?

    Exactly

  7. It varies by state. Some states will give another temp license that expires when the EAD expires so you can check into that. Otherwise, he will have to wait.

You should have NOAs with different numbers for each application that you can use to track. If they just aren't showing up its because USCIS's computer system is glitchy sometimes. Our 485 took 3 months to show up online.

I feel like a complete dork! I didn't even pay attention to the fact that we had 3 separate numbers :bonk: But, thanks to you, I just checked the website and got some great updates!!!

  8. Hey there fellow VJers! Please forgive me for asking multiple questions in this post :hehe: My now husband came here on a K1 in January, and we married that same day. About a week later, we went to the DMV, and he was issued an Arkansas driver's license; however, it was only valid for 3 months. So that expired in April, and he obviously isn't driving now. We got notification this week that his EAD has been ordered, and we should have it in a few weeks. The problem is-how can he go to work if he can't drive? The lady at the DMV said he can't get a permanent license until he receives his GC! Is this true? My other question involves the USCIS website. When we enter his case number, we get the status update for the EAD. How, or can we, track the advance parole and the 485? Any advice is much appreciated :bonk:

  9. Well, we didn't receive an RFE for the first step of the journey, but guess what came in the mail today? Our RFE letter was because we didn't send a copy of his vaccination worksheet-I had no idea we needed to do that. We thought since he had his medical done recently, we didn't need to send supplemental info. Oh well, hopefully this won't delay the AOS too long.........

  10. I believe the female is the USC/petitioner and will not be getting a green card, her husband will.

OP> Use the name you legally go by now. If you took your husband's name, then use it on all the forms from now on. You will be sending a copy of your certified marriage certificate. They know people change their names when they marry. It is just important to use the name you legally go by now.

    Thank you!

  11. Darren had his interview on Jan. 20th.. I was told today his visa was printed-does that mean it is close to being mailed, or is there a chance it will just sit there a while? I would like to hear from others that interviewed in January to see how quickly the visas were received :clock: Also, is the waybill number issued at Montreal, and what is the significance of the reference number?

  12. Just letting everyone know we were approved this morning shortly after 9 am!!! Darren said the embassy reviews were spot on-they asked for no proof of relationship. They asked for I-134, letter of intent, and my tax returns. He got the nice lady with the dread locks, and she asked him these following questions: 1. How did you meet?

    2. Do I have children? 3. How does the child feel about the relationship? 4. What do I do for a living? 5. What city and state are you going to live in? Then she had him swear that he was telling the truth, and she handed him the Welcome letter to the U.S. PIECE OF CAKE!!! Here's to speedy approvals for all VJers :dance::dance::D

  13. I am just gathering all my stuff for my interview on January 26th in Montreal....I have put everything in an accordion file folder...it has a handle...will I be allowed to bring this in? I've heard they are quite strict..

    Please let me know

    Thanks

Our interview is scheduled for January 9th in Montreal, and from what I've read on here, things with handles are not allowed. We put all of our things into a binder with sheet protectors-good luck to you
