Oh okay I see what you're saying. They enter with the visa one time and then the stamp is valid for 6 months until the card is issued and they can travel. This helps a lot, thanks everyone!
-
Thank you. Yes, I know what permanent residency is I was asking so I don't petition or start the process until they are ready if it's an issue. Ok great I can use the birth certificate instead. I thought the immigrant visa was a one time entry, is that not the case?
-
Hi everyone,
I'm familiar with how to petition my parents over to the U.S, however, I'm not clear on a few things;
1. after they approved and issued an immigrant visa and pay the fee, is the green card issuance set in motion before they even arrive here? Or do they actually have to enter the U.S for it to be issued and mailed? I know they can't travel once they enter on the immigrant visa and have to wait for the green card but I want to make sure all their affairs are in order before I apply for them.
2. Also, how long can they stay outside of the U.S as a permanent resident? Is it 6 months or a year? They've lived abroad for over 25 years so it's not a quick let's pick up and leave thing. I want to make sure I do this right.
3. Their marriage certificate is in arabic, I'm assuming I have to get that translated but where I'm from women usually keep their maiden names so my last name doesn't match hers (it matches my dad's). How do I prove she's my mother?
Thanks for any insight.

Oath completed today! Good luck to everyone!

Hello everyone!
I had my interview today:
My husband and I arrived around 20 minutes early and the officer called me in around 10:30. He swore me in and started asking me questions from my application, my SSO number, birth date, husband, etc.
Then he gave me one sentence to read and one sentence to write down.
He moved on to ask me the following civics questions:
1. Who is in charge of the Executive Branch?
2. If the President can no longer serve, who takes his place?
3. When is the last day you can file your income taxes?
4. Who was President during WW1?
I can't remember the other 2! He stopped after asking 6 questions because that's all I need to pass. He then, had me sign a couple of papers and provided me with a paper that says I passed and to wait for a letter for my oath ceremony.
I was in and out in around 10 minutes. Good luck to everyone!

I got the letter in the mail today. My interview is set for March 18th. The letter asked that I bring basically everything I sent in with my application.

Thanks for your response! My status changed
Case Is In Line For An Interview -
Hello everyone,
I completed my biometrics on the scheduled day and am starting to study. I have 2 questions:
1. For question 23, it says to name my current US Representative but when I go to look at who it is at www.house.gov, it shows there are 2 for Maine, Bruce Polliquin and Chellie Pingree. Do I just provide both?
2. Some questions have more than one answer listed like What does the judicial branch do? Answers listed are:
* reviews laws
* explains laws
* resolves disputes
* decides if a law goes against the constitution
Do I provide all these answers or are they just different ways to answer the question? Other questions like this specify to give one of something but these don't.
Thanks!
-
Also a question - we were asked to bring, a) Tax Returns for past 3 years, b) ID and c) Passports at the interview.
Did anyone else is asked to bring all of the above? Thanks!
I sent in my tax returns for the past 3 years with my application so they only asked me to bring my ID and Passports (current and expired)

Can someone please add me, sent the package today to the Texas lockbox
-
Alright makes sense, thank you! Did you send in a lot of evidence? The instructions say transcripts OR this OR that, etc. Would transcripts suffice?
-
Yes I agree, but in the instructions under Part 11, it says answer ALL questions so I wanted to make sure that leaving them empty wouldn't be an issue. There's no place to write NA in the boxes.

I'm going to file next week
I do have a question about the form:
Under Additional Information it asks a bunch of questions where you would choose Yes or No. There are a few where it asks and if you say Yes, the next one after that says "If Yes" basically to answer it. If I answered No, do I not choose yes or no or not answer it?
Thanks in advance for your help

can anyone help?

Hi,
I've read the instructions on how to fill out the N-400 but there is something that is confusing to me:
1. It says to include times i've been outside the US for the past 5 years and I've only been a resident for 3 years. Anytime before that I wasn't even living here so how would that be relevant. Does it mean since I became a resident?
2. Under Additional Information it asks a bunch of questions where you would choose Yes or No. There are a few where it asks and if you say Yes, the next one after that says "If Yes" basically to answer it. If I answered No, do I not choose yes or no?
Thanks in advance for your help

No you have to let them know every time you move and so does your husband. You MUST do that within 10 days.
-
No I didn't the first time, the second time I did it over the phone so they sent a summary of the call that I requested to change it that was it
-
I wouldn't worry, I changed my address after I got my 2 year green card and never got a confirmation in the mail but my husband (the USC) did get a confirmation.
-
Is it possible to get 'married' (just perform the marriage ceremony & have the reception) abroad, and not have any documentation signed abroad or anywhere, then enter the U.S. on the k1 visa and get married legally in the U.S. w/in the 90 day period? Is there any risk to doing this?
I think you answered your own question, keep it simple. It's a marriage ceremony. Papers aren't going to mean much whether you signed them or not. In a lot of cultures, the marriage isn't official until you have this marriage ceremony. What are you going to do if this question is asked at the interview? Say you had a marriage ceremony but didn't sign anything? Lying isn't even an option. USCIS deal with all kinds of cultures and they aren't clueless. You asked if it's possible, everyone has answered there's a risk. Believe them.

Thanks everyone, I get it now. Visa is valid for 6 months (they have 6 months to enter), then the stamp is valid for a year and they can travel while waiting.
