  1. We were not trying to "pull" anything either. We were up front with what we did, and presented our documentation as part of our petition. This is something well known of by those working at the embassy. You had documents drawn up there by a lawyer, correct? The flippant responses might be from those not considering that in that society, it is impossible for couples to even spend time with one another for any period of time without some sort of 'contract' in place. That's all this is, a contract, and not even fully recognized as a marriage in Egypt either. There's a street name there for this paper too, and it isn't complimentary!

  2. Dear OP: We had local marriage papers when I lived in Egypt, which are required in Egypt or the Egyptian citizen involved is subject to arrest. A couple cannot legally live together otherwise. This came up during my husband's (then fiance's) interview and we found that the US embassy in Cairo is well aware that this is a required document for couples to live together. We submitted these papers when we filed for the K-1 visa. My husband entered the US with a K-1 visa and we were legally married here.

  3. I suggest looking into a (tax deferred) medical savings account. It's pretty win-win, because you have money to supplement when the insurance falls short, you do not have to pay taxes on it, and, it stays with you even if your insurance changes.

In this way, you can keep the insurance--even though it might not be optimal--but at least your employer contributes to it, keep the money that you would have paid for a more expensive policy, and have the security of knowing that you're not just relying upon suboptimal insurance coverage.

You also have the option of using that money later for whatever you want (though at that point you will have to pay the taxes--that's the 'deferred' aspect, but you would have paid taxes on it anyway!).

  4. i know i need that U.S. Federal income tax returns for the 3 most recent tax years , w2s & 1040

    i ask about 1090 what it's ???

I think you mean 1099s? Since I am self employed I get a 1099 at the end of the tax year instead of a W2. I submitted this for my affidavit of support, and it's fine.

    Hope that helps.

*I also submitted my most recent year's tax transcript.

  5. I sent documents DHL and it was very efficient. I gave instructions though for them to hold the package at the DHL office to be picked up, because his address is difficult (impossible?) to find, and that worked out very well for us. Hope that helps.

Also, if you can keep that package within the envelope size provided by DHL, and try other means like scanning, etc. for documents that can be done that way, it is much cheaper. I wish I had done that, because I nearly fainted when my package cost $200+ to send. I'm sure you probably knew that already; I didn't so I thought I'd add it here.

  7. The government documents that we have are translated a bit differently than the non-governmental documents. The former are have a rubber-stamped blurb, with a space for a signature line, telling about the authenticity of translation and seal. The non-governmental translations we have are the ones with just the seal, signature, and name of translator. I hope that helps.

I should say that the governmental translations appear a bit different, as they are translated by the ministry itself, and have that blurb. (Not translated differently.)

  8. I had this same problem, as I freelance. I just added a separate sheet with a notation at the top to indicate which question it was an addendum to, and listed the places I had received 1099s from. I had no problems with this. I also left my signature and date at the bottom of the sheet. Hope that helps.

  9. Ah, now I get it, I was wondering how to add friends, and, as usual, I found the answer to what I was looking for in the forums. I guess I have not posted because I feel I have little to offer at this point in the process, and there's so much available here, that I haven't been unable to find what I needed so far, to ask a new question. This site has been so much help to us though, and I hope to be more active, as I, myself, am learning more and more.
