  • Our Story
We met in Shenzhen, went on a honeymoon, and got married in August 2009. Then we moved around China as I taught (high school physics and chemistry) at different schools. Yan trades stocks by computer. She and our son, Tutu, applied for tourist visas to go to the US and were rejected. We got retirement visas to live in Malaysia. (Sure a lot easier than getting visas to the US. LOL) We applied for, AND GOT, her and his green card. But we moved to Portugal and she had to give up her IR-1.Now, that I'm older and wiser(!) we want to move back to the US so I am applying AGAIN for her IR-1..So I've done this before, but it sure escapes me. The one thing I remember about the last time was calling USCIS with a problem. They put me on hold and told me the wait time was 27,000,000 minutes! She was listening in so she knows I wasn't lying. (I hope it goes faster this time.) We live on a catamaran which I am taking to the USVI to use as our residence. Or we'll buy a house there.

  1. Do you have any suggestions how I can show my intentions to do so? I assume if I move there ahead of her interview and establish a residence that would work. Or if I had a job offer or enrolled in some educational program. But I'm retired. Our son is there and we'll use his address. But we won't actually acquire a home until we move there together. Actually, we want to get a mobile home.
  2. Thanks, Arken. No, he's not a citizen yet. He went to school in the UK and we did all the right things to make sure he didn't lose his PR status. But he's only been back living in the US for a year so I think he has 4 more to go. I don't think he can count the years he had his green card and was going to school overseas.
  3. This is a little unusual, as most of us are. 1-year, almost to the day, my 1-130 for my wife was approved. So I'm now working on the I-864. This is our second time through I applied 8 years ago and she got a green card, along with my stepson. She gave hers up when we moved to Portugal. He didn't. Now he lives and works in the US. In the I-864, Part 3, it asks about the Immigrants I'm sponsoring. Since I'm still liable for his support, it seems like I'm still sponsoring him. But he's already in the US; not coming within 6 months or after 6 months of my wife. I assume it means Who am I Sponsoring on this I-864 because in part 5 (Sponsor's Household size) it asks about other people I have sponsored, previously. So, I believe I should ignore him for part 3 but include him for part 5. Another interesting thing is when it asks for my physical address it has a space for country. But I thought only people residing in the US were allowed to sponsor family immigrant visas. Having done this twice, and looking at the changes USCIS has made, I can see they've made some things simpler. But I've gotten older and less capable, so its a wash.
