Funny you mention the *Music* in the movie. I can watch old Russian movies, even if I don't understand much more than what I can see but the newer ones with that God-awful Russian music is more than I can bear.

There must be some law where all taxi drives must play this music as well.

Are you talking about the Russian rock? I sure hope not.

==================

Absolutely... if you call that "rock", to me it is closer to disco.

Rock, typically has real instruments rather than electric drum tracks.

I'm not sure what music plays in the crime movies cause I don't watch them, but bands like DDT or Nautilus sound like anything but disco.

On the subject of music, I was at a night club in Yoshkar-Ola (Pharon's) in September, and it was "80's night." Only recognized one song the whole evening, the rest were (I assume) Russian golden oldies. I really liked it for the most part. The one song I recognized was Dire Strait's "Money for Nothing." I got major kudos for knowing all the words. :)

Dire Straights rock

I think I would be willing to pay extra if the taxi was playing Dire Straits

I need to quit doubting myself so much.

Ok, I got to the bottom of the question I raised earlier about me barely remembering willie nelson in a movie *Gulag*.

I also thought Kurt Russell was in it.

AS it turns out I was confusing Kurt Russell with another guy.. whose name escapes me, it was the same guy who hung himself in the hotel in "Officer and a Gentleman".

This actor was in the Movie; Gulag.

About the same time period (as I recall) there was another movie "Coming out of the ice" about an american sent off to a gulag, Willie Nelson is in this movie and sings "rock Island line".

Oddly enough, I have not seen either one, I called my bud whose house I caught a glimps of it at, (back in the 80's) he thought they were 'one in the same' same movie too, he dug around a little on-line and solved this *memory mystery*.

He swears they are both good movies, I ended up finding a used VHS copy of each and when he comes for a visit in Dec. we will watch them.

I read a review at Amazon on "coming out of the ice" from a guy that read the book (it's atrue story) and he claimed the book is so much more intense and full of striking detail about what this guy went through, I ended up ordering a used copy for less than 5$ including shipping.

Interesting enough, this American moved to the USSR with his family because they believed in the *Ideals* of communism.

(if only Hillary had given it a try too)

I guess I'll jump in on this old thread now too. Over the weekend, Natasha and I watched "Thief" (Вор) which is a favorite of Natasha's. It's a drama all the way and very sad (and not a 'good' sad). I hate to give spoilers so I really can't say much about the film (small spoilers ahead: read at your peril). Natasha was completely endeared to Katya , the female lead, because of her enduring love for her 'husband'. I will say he was not a very nice man. Natasha and I discussed this and her response was "At the end of the 2nd war there were not many men available, and she needed a father for her young son, and a husband for herself". I expressed my thought that this man was never much of a father to her son or very nice to him or to her, or a nice man at all. He only wanted what he wanted when he wanted it, to suit his own purposes. I could tell our conversation was straying into cultural-difference territory, and I said that being neither Russian nor a woman, and not living through those horrible days, I could not understand all of her motivations.

Anyone else seen this movie? Your thoughts?

I haven't seen the movie but we've had this conversation many times. There seems to be a slight (sometimes not so slight) difference in the familial obligations of a husband or wife in Russia and the U.S.

However, talking to other Russians (women.. and sometimes men) it seems there's not so much of a cultural-difference, but of an individual difference or even an age difference similar to the one here. For instance, women in the past were raised to be "homemaker" type women and all of them could cook and clean and their primary job was to take care of their husband and family. That's shifted now to a dual-income home where the majority of women are working and traditional "homemaker" roles are more shared. The same has started to happen in Russia but there seems to be a trend recently where young women believe men are there for nothing more than to give them everything they want.

The same thing has happened here. The difference being most men in Russia aren't dumb enough to fall for it (plus they have almost an endless supply of beautiful women who are willing to still take on the tradtional "homemaker" roles) thus forcing these women to look for a spouse abroad.

So, as far as a cultural-difference, I don't know. It seems to me to be more of an age difference with the "traditional roles" of a husband/father being shifted more to that of a "financial sponsor" for the family. It was done in the past, but in the past the emphasis was more on the title and stability. Now, it's just about the money.
