K2 SSN and EAD prior to filing AOS

My wife entered with her two sons (20) and (6) on June 26th. We were able to obtain her SSN before the wedding on Aug. 4th. But the SSA would not issue SSNs to her sons at that time. The oldest boy would like to go to work now (and I would like it too). Is it possible to get him an SSN with work authorization without first filing the AOS paperwork or the issuance of a green card.? Because of the raise in fees for the AOS I am not going to be able to file that until October or November.

K2ers cannot get an SSN until they receive the EAD.

See the link in my sig - section C, #2 shows that K2ers must have work authorization first.
