Another option for @FROWNcat if DL is valid for a while is just to apply for a passport card and carry together with DL in wallet. Fees should be similar. Passport card definitely proves citizenship and is more versatile than DL for travel other than proving you can drive.

Another benefit of passport card it's valid for 10 years, and DL usually for 5.

Very good point. Correction after checking wallet with old IDs. I did have regular DL when I was on work visa. But once I became conditional LPR, I applied for Real ID and have been applying for Real IDs since then. Thankfully, never had any issues getting it.

 

That makes sense! My first California ID was in 2005 when I moved here for grad school before REAL IDs were a thing. I showed my Connecticut Birth Certificate back then but the new system requires re-verification.
