Is this common? Detroit FO if anyone has personal experience? Is state id/ driver license needed at the oath ceremony? It's expiring in a month so wasn't sure if I should renew it before the oath ceremony or wait until after. Has anyone renewed state id / driver license while waiting for oath to be scheduled? Anything to be careful about when we go in to renew it?

Not in my experience. Valid GC is your ID. That's all I had to show. Once you attend the ceremony, your GC will be taken away, and you'll be given certificate of naturalization (same day) which can serve as ID until you get new DL. Then you can apply for US passport / US passport book.
