We're going to NY state in a couple weeks to visit my family and friends - who live a bit upstate of NYC.

I'm going to take my husband to NYC for a few days since he's never been there :dancing:.

Now I usually stay with friends when I go, but this time I'd prefer to stay in a hotel because we'll have more independence...won't have to worry aboutL: can we have a key? what time should we come back?...etc.

I've done some searching on hotels.com, kayak.com....and have found expensive hotels.

I'm all up for staying in Queens or Brooklyn - even the Bronx if it's in a safe neighborhood.

Any advice...deals....good websites? My friend found a decent hotel in Manhattan for $88 on expedia.com.

Thanks in advance...

The Howard Johnson near Newark airport is pretty affordable. They have a shuttle to the airport, from where you can hop on an airtran (2 min ride) to Newark airport train station. From there, take NJ transit into NY midtown.

A hotel in midtown would be much more convenient, of course. But convenience has a price.

ETA: Lots of hotels in the newark airport area will offer the same shuttle service. Not just the Howard Johnson.

I know what you mean.

I think we'll stick with a hotel in NYC only because we're spending a few nights there - so it won't be too expensive - and we can't afford to spend time going back and forth to NJ.

Thanks for the tip!

NP. Time from midtown to Newark airport would be around 25 minutes. Subway to some of the boroughs could be more than that.

Right right.

I'll keep looking for hotels and we'll decide. I stayed in NJ once and it wasn't too bad. But since we want to go to Queens and Brooklyn too - it'd be better to be closer - to save time.
