Yahoo now has a phone connection with it's messenger software and works quite well. I chat with my friend in Cagayan all the time and all we pay for is our Internet connection.

This yahoo messenger is actually our preffered method to communicate. We both have computers at home, so using webcam and head phones works great. The Voice is great, even better than calling with cellphone. Best thing is it's a free service.

I wish we would have stuck with that but I ended up spending about $300 a month calling her every day

When I was in Cagayan De Oro this past winter I used my yahoo messenger phone out option. Normally it is something like 16 cents a minute to call the Philippines but only 1 cent a minute to call withing the US to other US locations. But Yahoo since my yahoo profile is set to being a US resident must of thought I was still in the US so it was still only charging me 1 cent a minutes to call from my PC in the Philippines to a land line phone.

So I am not sure if it will work for everyone. But try it. Create a new Yahoo ID for your fiance but have her location be within the US. Then add minutes to the Phone out feature. Then have her call you on your home land line phone and see what the charges are.

After getting a 600 dollar cell phone bill on my end (and 100 on hers) I bought her a cheap computer (that she will give to her sister when she leaves) and we now use skype for free. The sound quality is better then standing face to face. We both wear usb headphone that are skype approved. We talk for hours every night.

My wife and I do the same thing. Depending on the Internet cafe the sound qaulity can be quite good.

I use phonecardsonet to call the Pilippines. I get around 30 minutes per $5 US despite what they advertise.
