From a personal experience it can create MAJOR PROBLEM. Salary is based on several factors, 2 engineers can have the same title but different pay scales, it can be based on Experience, there's also a HIDDEN facts employers will not reveal, the person you are training may be making more money than you do, It's based on the Market rate, since you have been with the company you get stuck with a 4% increased annually if lucky, but for an outsider whose joining in, The company has to pay them the MARKET rate for that JOB. Employers at time will do Salary adjustment if they realized they are falling behind the other companies in their payscale, but for the past 8 years I've only seen it once.

The previous company I worked for, there was a MOTO, if you want a RAISE you have to leave and come back. Since their policy is to match whatever offer you get from another company, some folks goes for interviews bring the job offer and KABOOM that's their raise, for others who don't play that game you kinda stuck until they started to lose most of the engineering staff.

At my exit interview I did let them know the reason I was quitting, when they try to counteroffer me I told them Thanks, NO THANKS, You have a bunch of nice, hard working folks out here but you guys take them for granted, you guys won't go far with that attitude, and I'll make sure I TAKE A COUPLE OF RESUMES WITH ME. 2 weeks later Major salary adjustment 15% raised, 4 months later I kept my word, and I hired 3 of the guys I worked for, I only asked them for one favor when they go to HR tel them that NIKITA2CHARLES that used to work here HIRED US. a week later another 10%. So in a span of 5 months the guys got 25% raised, was the company unaware of their salary practices or as long as nobody said anything it would be STATUS QUO.

Hard lesson for my wife also when she got here, a colleague try to sweet talk her into revealing her salary, Little did she know that a week later the lady went to HR asking for a raise, saying she's been working there for years, and my wife is a newbie how can she's getting paid more.
