Hi, everyone! My fiancee will enter the US on a K1 visa. We will marry in August and move to Seattle in September 2007 where I will begin a graduate program at UW. My fiance wants to attend college as well. Our plans are for him to take the GED in the Fall and hopefully enter school as early as Spring 2008 (starting with ESL classes). It seems as though a community college may be the best option for us ( (1) cheaper, ineligible for FinAid w/o GC, not state-resident, (2) ESL classes, (3) some programs do not require TOEFL). Further I'm unclear about some details:What is his school admission status? He isn't a US citizen, he may not have his GC by Spring, but he doesn't have a student. Does he need ESL?

For those of you who have immigrated to the US and live in Seattle or have spouses who have done so, please share your experiences about attending college in Seattle including: Is is best to wait for the GC? Do you reccomend (or not reccomend) any particular colleges?

Thank you

I don't know about every university, but I know mine requires TOEFL and ESL placement for anyone not from an English speaking country period, regardless of visa status, unless they have already successfully completed a degree program at another insititution in an English speaking country. My job requires working a lot with international students and the requirement seems fairly standard just based on what I have seen from other unis.

I would call up the insitution's international affairs office and ask them for specific requirements regarding ESL and credential evaluation.
